V. Bess Shoemaker was born in Summershade, Ky. and was a Fort Worth resident for 30 years. She and her husband, Ernest celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on August 4, 1996. She was a member of College Hill Church of Christ.

HOUSTON -- Betty M. Skiles, 72, an insurance reader for an insurance company, passed away Saturday, June 21, 1997, in Houston after a long, courageous battle with Lupus.

Betty Skiles was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Brownwood, to Arch and Bess Ratliff. She had lived in the Houston area for the last 28 years. Prior to that, she had spent 10 years in Hurst where she volunteered at Glenview Hospital.

Nettie Lorene Slater was born Jan. 6, 1928, in Corsicana. The daughter of Murphy Alexander and Lillie Hardeman, she grew in Tyler and attended Emmitt Scott High School there. Following the family's return to Corsicana, Nettie graduated from G.W. Jackson High School. She came to Fort Worth and united in matrimony with Rev. Marion Samuel Slater on Dec. 9, 1959. They enjoyed more than 23 years of life together until parted by his death in 1982.
She was an active member of Strangers Rest Baptist Church, and was the president of the Mission Board many years. She was employed as housekeeper for the Baird family more than 13 years.
Survivors: Sons, Marion S. Slater Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., and Billy E. Slater, George H. Slater, James D. Slater, all of Fort Worth; daughters, Annie L. Smith and Linda G. Bell, both of Aurora, Colo; 12 grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

Auburn Taylor was born Feb. 29, 1912, in Santo.
Auburn was born the last of five children and was raised in the country near the community of Natty Flat. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign. He attended TCU to become an engineer and worked 43 years for the Texas Highway Department.
He was a weekend rancher who had a love of the Texas countryside and its people. He enjoyed the poetry of Robert Burns, Shakespeare and the Bible. His dry sense of humor will be remembered and missed.

Roberta "Jean" Watts was born Nov. 3, 1929, in Lonaconing, Md. She moved to Arlington in 1965. She retired in 1995. She attended the Arlington Christian Center, now known as The Arlington Church. Jean was well-loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Patsy Wimberly was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Texarkana.
She earned a Bachelor of Music in 1951 from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark. She had a Masters in mid-management from Tarleton State University in 1980. Her first year of teaching was in Lafayette County, Ark. in 1951. She taught in Burleson Indepedent School District from 1959 to 1985.
She was a charter member and first president of Burleson Classroom Teachers Association. When it was changed to the Texas State Teachers Association, she held several other offices and was a delegate to the state convention several times.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Burleson. She loved teaching and her students. She was a resident of Burleson 46 years. She had written a book and was known for being a humorous speaker. She loved kids, people, her family, fishing, nature and garage sales. She taught speech, choir, music, English and literature. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ida Werner.
Survivors: Paul O'Reilly of Burleson and Portland, Ontario; son, Mike Wimberly and wife, Vivian, of Beaumont; daughters, Lynne Stanford and husband, Larry of Burleson; grandchildren, Larry Chance Stanford, Kevin Wimberly, Kara Wimberly; and three great-great- grandchildren.
