Nancy K. Chambers
DALLAS -- Nancy Katharine Chambers, 45, died Monday, June 16, 1997.

Nancy Katharine Chambers was born March 11, 1952, in Midland. She graduated from Midland High School in 1969; Austin College in Sherman in 1974; and received her master of fine arts degree from the University of Dallas in Irving in 1976.
A well-known artist, Nancy possessed a nearly unrivaled ability to awaken the child within. To understand her art, said one art curator, we might go back to our own childhood, to a time when we still felt able to make things out of simple materials, when we could make a broomstick into a wild stallion, or a pile of sand into an enchanted castle. Nancy's art has been featured in more than 70 group exhibitions throughout the United States, including an exhibit at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. She had more than 16 solo exhibitions at galleries and museums such as the Amarillo Museum of Art, Beaumont Art Museum, DW Gallery, Delahunty Gallery, Laguna Gloria Museum, Museum of the Southwest, Stoner Art Center, the Tyler Museum and Waco Art Center.
She was one of only 15 artists included in The Gihon Foundation's `Works by Women,' a nationally toured collection reflecting a century of development in American art, now permanently displayed in Santa Fe, N.M. Other artists included in the `Works by Women' collection include Georgia A. O'Keeffe and Grandma Moses. Nancy was named one of "Six Rising Stars" in a 1980 feature article in `Texas Homes' magazine. Articles about her work have also appeared in `Artweek, Artspace, Albuquerque Journal, D Magazine' and newspapers including `The Dallas Morning News, Fort Worth Star-Telegram and `Plano Star Courier.' In connection with `Works by Women,' The Gihon Foundation also produced a film, `From the Heart,' which includes a segment about Nancy and her work.
Her art is included in many public and private collections. Among the public collectors are A.H. Belo Corp., Atlantic Richfield Co., Frito-Lay, The Gihon Foundation, Mountain View College, Southwestern Bell Telephone and The Crescent Collection. At the time of her death, Nancy also worked as gallery director and art instructor for Richland College in Dallas.
Family and friends will deeply miss her eclectic eye, her unconventional sense of humor and her genuine love and compassion for life. Though gone from us for a little while, Nancy's spirit lives through her art, which has been described as sometimes whimsical, sometimes ominous, always fantastic. Her influence will also be visible in the works of the many students she had the opportunity to teach.
Nancy was preceded in death by her grandparents, Adelyn and Diedrich Ballmann and Bella and Clarence Chambers; her uncle, Richard B. Ballmann; her sister, Judy Cathleen Chambers; and a nephew, Eric Chambers Vanslavie.
Survivors: Her parents, Constance B. and Robert H. Chambers of Tulsa, Okla.; her brother and sister-in-law, Michael B. and Denise M. Chambers of Tulsa; her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie C. and Richard Vanslavie of Sunbury, Pa.; her brother, Sean J. Chambers of Dallas; her beloved pets, Prussia and Rosie; her aunt, Lacey T. Ballmann; cousins, Elizabeth J. Ballmann, Barbara B. Ballmann, Margaret T. Ballmann and Mary B. McFarlane and second cousin, Amanda Mae McFarlane, all of Waukesha, Wis.; cousins, Martha Renner of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Rene W. Ramsdell of Highlands, N.C.; and many, many cherished friends.
