Willard Dickerson was a man of great integrity who taught his family to love the Lord. He was a man who lived his life for his family and his church. Central Baptist Church was his home away from home. He spent many hours there volunteering his time and skills, whether it be fixing things or serving on numerous committees. He served 14 years volunteering at the old Bay Coast Hospital. It was a major decision to have to leave that capacity when he learned he had cancer. He gave almost 10 gallons of blood so others might live. He was a coach for men and women’s church softball teams and ended up making some lifelong friendships. He was a mentor all the way through his life. Many hours were spent watching Gander football and Astros baseball. Double D Crafts (Dad & Daughter) was born because of his love for doing woodworking. He was a painter by trade and painted many people’s houses and loved helping people in that way also. Willard Dickerson was a Husband, Dad and Grandpa and true friend who everyone would love to have. Our family was truly blessed by having him.

Helen McWhorter

Helen McWhorter, 89, passed away on October 4, 2008 in Baytown, TX. She was born Helen Erma Newman in Houston, TX on June 8, 1919 to John Preston Newman and Ruth Pauline Whitmore.

She graduated from St. Agnes High School in Houston, TX and completed several courses at Lee College.

She was united in marriage to the late Alphonso L. (Mac) McWhorter for about nine years.

In 1963, Helen’s mother became gravely ill and wasn’t expected to survive. Doctors advised her to move into a country area which might improve her failing health. Helen bought a place near Dacus, TX and hired caretakers to tend to her mother’s needs during the week while Helen continued working in Baytown. She drove to Dacus every weekend and became acquainted to the community and attended the Methodist Church there. With Helen’s care and devotion, her mother continued to live comfortably for another 15 years before she died.

In 1986, Helen retired from her accounting duties at Exxon after 43 years of loyal service.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents and Frank Lierman, a step-brother. She is survived by step-sister, Margie Lierman Ehmke in Eustis, Florida and step-brother, Sterling W. Steves in Ft. Worth. Survivors also include caregivers, Catherine and Richelle Richardson, and special friends, Arnold and Elizabeth Dixon and Ruth Hasty.

She was a close friend to Peggy Atkins from the time they first met as Exxon employees until Peggy’s death in 2005.

During her lifetime, Helen subtly helped many people in ways large and small. She provided needed help to casual acquaintances or even new ones, and displayed sincere interest to children in school, know that they benefitted for positive attention. She favored youngsters of her friends with practical gifts and was virtually a lifesaver in at least one crucial situation. She quietly improved the lives of many people through her astute observations of and provisions of their unspoken needs.

In her last months spent at The Rehabilitation Center of Baytown, she garnered new friendships among the patients and staff.

Helen loved life---plants, animals, and especially dogs. Among the survivors must be listed, Poppy and Daisy, her “flower children”.

She established the Helen McWhorter Chair and a scholarship fund at the Veterinarian School at Texas A&M along with lifetime residence when needed for her beloved Poppy and Daisy.

Memorial donations to the Helen McWhorter Memorial would be most appropriate because of her devotion to this cause. The address is: Texas A&M Foundation, College of Veterinary Medicine, 4461 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-4461.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 8, at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Ken Goodell, at Earthman Funeral Home, 3919 Garth Rd., Baytown TX, 77521, 281-422-8181.
