PALO PINTO -- Jewell Gentry DeWitt, 87, a retired registered nurse, died Wednesday, May 28, 1997, in Mineral Wells.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday at Palo Pinto United Methodist Church. Burial: Rough Country Ranch in Palo Pinto.
Jewell DeWitt was born March 19, 1910, in Carbon, Texas. She was a registered nurse who retired from Harris Hospital Vocational Nursing School, where she was an instructor for many years. She was a veteran of World War II. She had been a resident of Palo Pinto County and a member of Palo Pinto United Methodist Church since 1981.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Stephen Craig, and her husband, Joseph D. DeWitt, in 1976.
Survivors: Daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and George Smith of Palo Pinto; sister, Lucille Young of Lubbock; grandchildren, Gary Smith and wife, Gaylene, of Fort Polk, La., and Rebecca Ann Smith and Joshua Craig Smith, both of Palo Pinto; great-grandson, Samuel Wayne Smith of Fort Polk, La.; other close family members, Tony and Robin Shifflett of Saginaw and David and Karen Watson of Arlington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mable Odessa Cooper Hale was the daughter of the late Cornelious and Isabella cooper. She attended Ed Wilson School and graduated from I.M. Terrell High School in 1941. She moved to New York City and united with Saint John Baptist Church. In 1981, Mrs. Hale moved back to Fort Worth and united with Rising Star Baptist Church. Rev. T.H. Davis was pastor.

Annie Peveto Hoffman was born Dec. 8, 1896, in Mineral Wells. She was the youngest of 9 children of the Ashburn family, a pioneer Mineral Wells family.
She was a longtime member of Mineral Wells First United Methodist Church. She doted on her grandchildren and loved to fish. Mrs. Hoffman was a modern lady for her era.

A former Fort Worth resident, Jean Davis Jenkins attended Lillie B. Clayton Elementary and McLean Junior High and graduated from Paschal High School with the class of 1939. She attended Lindenwood College in Missouri and the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. Mrs. Jenkins was a member of the Colonial Dames of America and Daughters of the American Revolution.
