Orbin B. Starnes was born Aug. 11, 1914, in Graford. He was an Army veteran and a member of the American Legion. Mr. Starnes was a member of Morgan Mill Baptist Church.
Survivors: Wife, Bonnie Starnes; sons, Larry Starnes and James Starnes; daughter, Linda Thornton; brothers, Elwood Starnes, Raymond Starnes, Maynard Starnes, Bill Starnes and Dan Starnes; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Jean Porter Sweeney
BROWNWOOD -- Jean Porter Sweeney, 75, a retired dietitian, died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at a Brownwood hospital.
Graveside service: 10 a.m. Thursday in Granbury Cemetery in Granbury. Memorial service: 3 p.m. Thursday at Union Presbyterian Church, Brownwood. Visitation: 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Davis- Morris Funeral Home.

Jean Porter Sweeney was born July 29, 1921, in Granbury. She graduated valedictorian and was granted a scholarship to TWU. She started her career in Lake Charles, La., moved to Brownwood and began working as a dietitian at Brownwood Memorial Hospital in 1947. She started the cafeteria-style dining at HPU. She was the first dietitian at BRMC and retired from there in 1987.
After retirement, she opened a private practice called Nutrition Services. She did private consulting and worked with nursing homes in the area. Along with Suzanne Doggett, she was a co-sponsor of the food service personnel in the TSTI system. She was a homemaker, a church worker, a community volunteer, a wonderful and loving wife, and a tremendous mother.
She was a member of the American Dietetic Association, the Texas Dietetic Association, the Big Country Dietetic Association, the DAR and Brownwood's Women's Club. Mrs. Sweeney was an elder deacon and choir member at Union Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Norris Porter.
Survivors: Husband, Rodger Sweeney of Brownwood; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Stephen Saltzman of San Diego, Calif., and Becky and Jerry Cook of Garland; brother and sister-in-law, Garth and Norma Porter of Granbury; sister-in-law, Nell Porter of Denison; and grandchildren, Terry, Josh and Ben Saltzman of San Diego and Matt and Wendy Cook of Garland.

Ila Teague
RUSK -- Ila Teague, 80, a homemaker, died Monday, May 19, 1997, at a Rusk hospital.

Ila Teague was born Oct. 5, 1916, in Gainesville. She was a former Fort Worth resident. In 1957 she moved to Tolar, where she was a member of Tolar Baptist Church. She moved to Jacksonville in 1992.
Mrs. Teague was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Teague, in 1948.
Survivors: Sons, Wilbor Teague of Jacksonville, Leon Teague of Austin and Billy Teague of Alvarado; daughter, Marie Chandler of Austin; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Ben O. Timberlake
ARLINGTON -- Ben O. Timberlake Jr., 70, retired from the General Services Administration, died Monday, May 19, 1997, at home after a long illness.
Funeral: 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church. Burial: Moore Memorial Gardens. Prayer service: 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Ben O. Timberlake was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Dallas.
He was the supervising architect for the construction of the Earl Cabell Federal Building in Dallas. He was also a real estate inspector. He served in the Army from May 1944 to August 3, 1946, being discharged as a 2nd lieutenant. He was in the class of 1947 at Texas A&M. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge of Arlington and St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church.
Survivors: Wife of 46 years, Terry Timberlake of Arlington; son, Benjamin Timberlake III of Miami, Fla.; and daughters, Ellen and Suzanne Timberlake, both of Arlington.

Charlie R. Vargas
FORT WORTH -- Charlie R. Vargas Sr., 78, a retired plumber for the city of Fort Worth, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, May 18, 1997, at a Fort Worth hospital.
Funeral: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Charlie Vargas was born Nov. 4, 1918, in Jacksboro.
Charlie served in the U.S. Army and was a much decorated World War II veteran, having served in the famed 36th Division and going through five major campaigns. He was a member of the Senior Citizens of Fort Worth. He retired as a plumber for the city of Fort Worth after 17 years of service.
He was preceded in death by one son, Charles R. Vargas Jr.

He was self-employed as a building contractor for more than 50 years.
