Dean Smethers Sr. was born Jan. 13, 1957, in Weatherford. He was a Baptist.

Survivors: Wife, Viki Smethers; son, Wendell Dean Smethers Jr.; stepsons, Casey and Tyler Burks; father, Joe Wayne Smethers; mother, Patricia Ann Smethers; brother, Warren Scott Smethers; sisters, Wenona Lea Jergins and Sharon Ann Webb; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dwayne and Barbara Bollier; two nephews; seven nieces; several great-nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Sandra Smethers.

Jack Smith
FORT WORTH -- Jack Smith, 95, a retired building contractor, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at a Fort Worth nursing home.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday at Stop Six Church of Christ. Burial: Cedar Hill Cemetery. Wake: 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Williams Funeral Chapel.

Jack Smith was born Feb. 23, 1902, in Marshall.

He was a member of Stop Six Church of Christ.

Survivors: Wife, Odessa Smith of Fort Worth; daughters, Jacqueline Smith of Fort Worth, Amie Smith of Dallas, Dorothy Duty of Dallas and Katherine Breshire of Arizona; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Howard Cecil Stevens Jr.
FORT WORTH -- Howard Cecil "Steve" Stevens Jr., 64, died Monday, May 5, 1997.

Memorial service: 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 2716 Hurstview in Hurst.

Howard Cecil "Steve" Stevens Jr. was born May 29, 1932, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Howard Cecil Stevens Sr. and Marguerite Baretta Stevens. He worked as a tool and die maker at a number of machine shops in the area. He was a Korean War Army veteran.

Survivors: Daughters, Celia Naples of DeSoto and Cindy Blount of Irving; and grandchildren, Rogan Naples, Devon Naples and Lauren Naples, all of DeSoto.

Doyle Sutton
WILLS POINT -- Doyle Sutton, 55, an analyst supervisor, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, in Wills Point.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Olivet Funeral Home. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Doyle Sutton was born Feb. 19, 1942, in Dennis.

He was an analyst supervisor for Lucent Technologies, an Air Force veteran and a member of First Baptist Church of Lipan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Mattie Sutton; a sister, Bertie VanNoy; and brother, Theo Sutton.

Survivors: Son, Chris Edward Sutton of Terrell; daughter, Ginger Gregory of Wills Point; brother, Estal Sutton of Everman, Deward Sutton of Richland Hills and Royce Sutton of Hurst; sisters, Ruth Stevens of Zephyr, Irene Griffith of Fort Worth and Rose Daunhauer of Louisvillke, Ky.; and grandson, Zachary Scott Gregory.

Kenneth Gordon Thorpe
GRAND PRAIRIE -- Kenneth Gordon Thorpe, 79, a retired technical writer and engineer with LTV, died Tuesday, May 6, 1997, at home of natural causes.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Grand Prairie. Officiating: with the Revs. Leighton Bearden and Pat Thresher.

Kenneth Thorpe was born March 4, 1918. He was a captain in the Army during World War II and directed artillery from a Piper Cub. He landed his Piper Cub on the streets of Paris, France, on the day of its liberation.

Anyone wishing to stand up and convey a memory is invited to do so at the memorial service.

Survivors: Wife, Helen Hare Thorpe; sons, Ric and Kenn; daughter-in-law, Deborah; grandsons, Wesley and Preston; and sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Hamilton E. Niccolls.

Margie Valle
FORT WORTH -- Margie Valle, 75, a retired General Dynamics accounting employee, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, at a local hospital.

Graveside service: 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brown, Owens & Brumley.

Margie Valle was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Fort Worth. She was accomplished in art and was a member of the Lockheed- Martin Art Club, Trinity Arts Club and East Side Art Club. She was also an accomplished artist and organist.

She was a member of Sagamore Hill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Valle was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Valle, in 1994, and her son, David Ray Valle, in 1976.

Survivors, all of Fort Worth: Daughter-in-law, Sandy Hutchinson; grandson, David Valle Jr.; and great- grandchild, Cori Valle.

Martha Criner Walker was born Feb. 12, 1935, in Vansville, La., to Lovia and Ruby Criner. She was a member of Pilgrim Valley Baptist Church. A daughter, Donna Walker, preceded her in death.

Survivors: Husband of 43 years, Wilbert Walker; son, Ronnie Lee Walker; daughters, Margaret Louise Bates, Patricia Ann Yates, Jacqueline M. Humphrey and Debrah Denise Edwards; brother, Henry Criner; sister, Clara Bytrian; 13 grandchildren; and five great- grandchilden.

FORT WORTH -- Jessie E. Atchison, 71, retired from civil service as an education counselor after 25 years, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, at home.

Jessie E. Atchison was born July 22, 1925, in De Leon. He served in the Navy during World War II and retired after 31 years as a lt. colonel from the Air Force in 1985. Lt. Col. Atchison was a member of the Lone Star Retired Officers Association. He was a graduate of North Texas University with a BS degree.

Survivors: Wife, Ruby Atchison of Fort Worth; son, Don Elwyn Atchison of Fort Worth; daughter, Yvonne Dell Atchison of Fort Worth; mother, Ora Mae Atchison of Gorman; and brother, Robert Chessly Atchison of Fort Worth.

Ray Cooper Baucom
FORT WORTH -- Ray Cooper Baucom, 91, a retired I.B.E.W. electrician, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, in Fort Worth.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Graveside service: 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Staggs Prairie Cemetery in Mineral Wells.

Ray Cooper Baucom was born Aug. 23, 1905, in Paducah, Ky. In 1906, a large contingent of the Baucom Family immigrated to Texas; most settling in Palo Pinto and Parker counties. As a young man, he lived in Cleburne for several years before moving to Fort Worth in 1940. At that time, he lived across the street from the Brooklyn Heights Methodist Church. The pastor, the late Rev. Frank Smith, was salvaging materials for the new edifice, Grace Methodist Church, being built on Calmont. Watching Rev. Smith working in the hot sun, Mr. Baucom stated, "That man needs some help." So saying, he contributed many hours of labor in the construction of the present facility and its annex. For more than 30 years, he was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Survivors: Wife of 62 years, Ruth E. Baucom of Fort Worth; daughter, Sara Bgeth Baucom-Jones of Anaheim, Calif.; sons, Robert H. Baucom of Arlington and Ray S. Baucom of Bedford; sister, Mildred Penny of Houston; sister-in- law, Lola Baucom of Lubbock; six grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; three nieces; and three nephews.

Henry Douglas Berry Jr.
ARLINGTON -- Henry Douglas "H.D.," "Daddy," "Chief," "Grandaddy," "Paw-Paw" Berry Jr., 104, died Wednesday, May 7, 1997, at home.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday at 6th Avenue Baptist Church in Corsicana. Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery in Corsicana.

Henry Douglas Berry Jr. was born April 9, 1893, in Winona, Texas. He moved to Corsicana in 1920, where he met, fell in love with and married Acquilla Jones.

Mr. Berry worked in the oil and gas industry and later as a carpenter.

He moved to Arlington in 1991, where he lived with his daughter, Harlean Berry Beal.

Mr. Berry received numerous recognitions for his longevity and intellectual acuity: oldest member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Fort Worth; recognized as prayer warrior by East St. Paul Baptist Church in Fort Worth; "Henry Berry Day" proclaimed by the cities of Fort Worth and Arlington; featured in the Star-Telegram and on local television stations numerous times since his 100th birthday; was "Texas Ranger Celebrity" at the April 14, 1997, game at The Ballpark in Arlington.

Mr. Berry played dominoes daily until the day of his death.

Survivors: Harlean Berry Beal, daughter, and Gerald Kenneth Beal, son-in-law, will cherish his memory; two grandchildren, Ronald Keith Beal and Dr. Cheryl Beal Anderson and grandson- in-law, F. Donnie Anderson Jr., will honor his memory; two great- grandchildren, Brittani Paige and Joshua Kenneth Anderson, will perpetuate his memory; and a host of nephews, nieces and friends will remember him with love.
