BEAUMONT -- Tom Phillips, 61, a welder contractor in general construction, died Saturday, May 3, 1997, at a Decatur hospital.
Graveside service: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Lucas Funeral Home of Fort Worth.
Tom Phillips was born Feb. 12, 1936, in Fort Worth. He had lived in the Fort Worth area until 1983 when he moved to Austin for several years. He then moved to Beaumont where he owned and operated the Phillips Manufacturing Company. His lifelong love was boating on lakes and on the Texas Coast.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry W. and Bessie Phillips.
Survivors: Sons, Toby Phillips of Weatherford, Ricky Phillips of Fort Worth and Jay Thomas Phillips of Beaumont; daughters, Vicki Wright of Boyd and Jill Phillips of Beaumont; brother, Harry W. COMANCHE -- Tommie Lenard Posey, 67, a mechanic in Comanche for many years, died Friday, May 2, 1997, at a Comanche hospital.
Graveside service: 2 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery in Comanche. Rev. Floyd Brawley will officiate.
Tommie Lenard Posey was born in Eldorado to Arch Posey and Ada Doran Posey. He had lived in Comanche for 25 years. He was married in Eldorado, Jan. 10, 1948, to Lue Brawley. He was a mechanic and a member of the Baptist Church.

FORT WORTH-- Walter Earl Steimel Sr., 69, an attorney, died Saturday, May 3, 1997.

Mr. Steimel was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Wichita Falls. He married Margaret Brady of Burkburnett Aug. 28, 1954. In 1945, he attended Peacock Military Academy, where he graduated as Senior Captain. Mr. Steimel graduated from Trinity University with a B.S. in physics in 1950. During and after the Korean Conflict, Mr. Steimel served in the Navy, Navy Pilot training in Pensacola in 1950, Officer's Candidate School, Newport, R.I., 1951, and Atomic Weapons School in Albuquerque, N.M., 1952. He served aboard the aircraft carriers Yorktown and Oriskiny in the Pacific Ocean and Japan, and received an Honorable Discharge as a llieutenant commander, USNR.
Mr. Steimel next attended the University of Texas School of Law, graduating in 1958. He practiced law in Wichita Falls from 1958 to 1963, and Fort Worth from 1963 until closing his practice in 1995. He specialized in representing plaintiffs in personal injury, products liability and worker's compensation cases, and representing clients in divorce and various other matters of personal representation. His practice spanned 37 years of dedicated service to residents of Fort Worth and surrounding areas.
During his career, he sacrificed time, energy and finances in pressing legislative and political agendas for the protection of all citizens. In 1970, 1972 and 1974, he ran for the State Senate as a Democrat from Tarrant County, receiving the Democratic Party nomination in 1974. He was credited for a number of consumer protections, including the withdrawal of legislation, which would have levied a tax on groceries. That tax has still not been imposed today.
Mr. Steimel also was involved and instrumental in a number of organizations dedicated to serving the public interest. He was a co-founder and past president of the Tarrant County Trial Lawyers Association; director of The Texas Trial Lawyers Association; Honorary Member of the Tarrant County Medical Assistants Society; and Governor of the American Arthritis Association. In 1994, he was honored for his contribution to and efforts on behalf of the Tarrant County Trial Lawyers Association. He was also a member of the Tarrant County Bar Association, Texas Bar Association and American Bar Association.
He was listed in Who's Who in American Law and a number of other professional and honorary listings and associations.
Mr. Steimel accumulated a number of admissions and licenses to further his effective representation of his clients. Among his professional licenses were the State Bar of Texas, United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas and one of the highlights of his life was having his children present when he was sworn in and admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court upon the motion of the Honorable Ralph Yarbrough in 1966.
Mr. Steimel enjoyed spending time traveling with his wife and family and hunting and fishing with his children. He will be sorely missed by his wife, children, family, friends and clients.
Survivors: Devoted wife of 43 years, Margaret Brady Steimel of Fort Worth; son, Walter Earl Steimel Jr., of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Stacy Elizabeth Steimel del Tomic of Santiago, Chile; and two grandchildren.
