Annie Arrendell
Annie Jewel Rice Driver Arrendell, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt and friend, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Methodist Hospital in Houston. She was preceded in death by her parents, Annie Laura and Jake Rice, her son Charles Arrendell, her brothers Clyde Rice, Rayburn (Judge) Rice, J. C. Rice, and Edgar (Pete) Rice, her sister Juanita Younger, and her stepson Dale Driver. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Gladys Rice and Joyce Driver, daughters Velma Roppolo and Linda McCollum and son-in-law Howard McCollum, grandchildren Michael and Jake Davis, Jeffrey and Paul Arrendell and Jennifer McCollum Alexander, great-grandchildren Emily Davis, Sydney and Lauren Arrendell and Jackson and Daniel Alexander, and numerous nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and -nephews. She is also survived by stepdaughters Yvonne Driver VanPortfliet and Ann Driver Dunham and their families and the family of Dale Driver. Jewel was born September 4, 1919, at the family home on Tarkington Prairie, close to Dayton Texas, with only a maiden aunt in attendance. She was a lifelong Texan and proud of it. She grew up in a close Christian family, with little money but lots of love. She married young but not wisely, and by the age of 23 was raising two children with the help of her parents, and attending Elliot Business School, learning to earn a living to support her children and herself. She then went to work in Cleveland. She later remarried, to a man with three children. She had her third child at age 27, and took great pride and joy in mothering all six. She always said she counted herself among the children and they always had lots of fun - but she was also the mother, and no one could have done it better. She was rewarded with the love and devotion of all six. Each succeeding generation offered Jewel an opportunity to be a kid again. She could fix a meal, bandage a scrape and give goodnight kisses, but she also camped out in the back yard (or on the living room floor), had her face painted and put down her cane to play "ready, set, go". She was never happier than when she was with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jewel was an elegant woman who was beautiful at every age. Her life was a study in laughter through good times and bad, finding joy in simple things and gracefully making do when the situation called for it. In her later years, as times became easier, she still loved the simple things best. She had an engaging smile and a knack for establishing connections with all those around her. She gave the best hugs and loved a party or a good book. As long as she was able, she would break into a mini-dance at any opportunity. She loved giving and receiving gifts. You could always count on her absolute enthusiasm for any gift you gave her. She was highly intelligent, had an excellent memory and kept herself sharp doing crossword puzzles. She was a sports fan, whether it was Little League when her grandsons played, or cheering on the Rockets, the Comets and the Astros. She was a devoted daughter to her mother. They lived together for the last five years of her mother's life, and Jewel cared for her while working full time and supporting them both. Jewel's life was shaped by the events the year she was born. 1919 was historic for women, as women finally were empowered to vote. Jewel carried that spirit of equality into the work place, and it showed. Jewel worked during the years when it was not fashionable for women to do so, and succeeded in a world dominated by men. It was a time when women were confined to a limited array of jobs, when underpayment was accepted as routine and when there was no such thing as "child care". She held clerical and secretarial positions in a variety of fields. She later became a plant time-keeper and clerk at a time when those jobs were still held principally by men. In doing so, she set the example that her daughters were to follow. Jewel retired from Brown and Root in 1990. But retirement never really "took" with her and she resumed her career in 1994 as Office Manager at her daughters' company, a job she held until 2006. She retained her ownership interest in the company and was always eager to hear how business was going. Customers, sales reps and vendors still ask about her. Jewel's faith in God was complete and absolute. She taught Sunday school for many years, always Beginner II; she was a natural with children. A long time member of First Baptist Church, Deer Park, she served as Church Secretary for a number of years. The family extends special thanks to her primary care physician and close friend Dr. Richard A. Jackson for his love and care over many years. Friends and family are cordially invited to a visitation from five-thirty until seven-thirty in the evening on Tuesday, the twenty-eighth of April, at Fairmont Funeral Home, 6777 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena Texas. The Celebration of Life service will commence at ten o'clock in the morning on Wednesday, the twenty-ninth of April, in the Chapel of Fairmont Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Annie Jewel Rice Arrendell Memorial Fund at the Houston Area Women's Center, 1010 Waugh Drive, Houston TX 77019. Words of comfort may be expressed to the family at www.FairmontFH.com.
