Laura Lane

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. — Graveside services for Laura Lane, 88, of Kennett Square took place at the East View Cemetery in Vernon, Texas.
Ms. Lane died Dec. 23.
She was born in Vernon and graduated from Texas Woman’s University in 1933. Following a career in journalism, first at the Vernon Daily Record, then at the Texas Agricultural Extension Service at Texas A&M University, she worked for more than 30 years as the associate editor for the Farm Journal magazine in Philadelphia.
During the 1970s, she successfully lobbied before Congress for the repeal of the “widow’s tax,” a tax on the value of farms passed from husband to wife. She was included in “Who’s Who of American Women” and wrote and spoke about farming. She owned a farm in East Feliciana Parish, La., and her papers and files will be made available for research at the Arthur & Elizabeth Schlesinger Library on History of Women in America at Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Mass.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Lane Coulter of Bryan; a brother, William Allen Lane of Baton Rouge, La.; numerous nephews and nieces.
Linda Montelongo Salazar
Oct. 9, 1950 — Jan. 27, 2002
Services for Linda Montelongo Salazar, 51, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan.
Monsignor John McCaffrey of St. Joseph Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Bryan City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Salazar died Sunday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Bryan and was employed by Friedman’s Jewelry at Post Oak Mall. She was a Catholic.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Salazar.
Survivors include three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Pete Jr. and Leona Montelongo, Jesse and Estela Montelongo and Ruben Montelongo, all of Bryan; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary Garza, Lydia and Adrian Cruz and Gloria Montelongo, all of Bryan, and Vera and Mike Scogin of Huntsville.
Memorials may be made to the American Liver or Kidney Foundation.
Jacque Jordan Barcus
Feb. 26, 1898 — Jan. 21, 2002
AUSTIN — Memorial services for Jacque Jordan Barcus, 103, took place Thursday at Westminster Manor Chapel in Austin.
Private burial was at Capital Parks Cemetery.
Mrs. Barcus died Jan. 21.
She was born in Merle, Texas, and formerly lived in Caldwell and Somerville. She graduated from Somerville High School, was granted a teaching certificate at the age of 16 and taught in Burleson and Washington counties. She attended Waco Practical Business College and the University of Texas, receiving a BBA degree with honors.
She served as secretary to two Texas governors, a lieutenant governor, state senators, a state representative, senate committees and the Department of Education. She was a member of the Daughters of the Nile, The Beauceant, numerous flower show organizations, the Austin Woman’s Club and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Survivors include a cousin, Betty Jo Peterson and husband Stanley.

Williams Paul Jones
July 24, 1917 — Jan. 26, 2002
NAVASOTA — Graveside services for Williams Paul Jones, 84, of Houston are set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Plantersville Cemetery.
The Rev. Gary Ferbet of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church in Houston will officiate.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.
Mr. Jones died Saturday in Memorial Southwest Hospital.
He was born in Waco and was an architect and partner with Dunaway & Jones. He graduated in 1939 with a B.A. and B.S. in architecture from Rice University and became a registered architect in 1945. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Texas Society of Architects, Construction of Specifications Institute and numerous social dance clubs. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 - 45 and received numerous medals.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Stevens Dyer Jones.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Jones of Houston; two sons, Steven O’Brien Jones and Peter Venn Jones; a sister-in-law, Berta Lee Jones White of Dallas; two nephews; a niece; a great-nephew; and numerous cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Lorine Robinson
March 24, 1928 — Jan. 27, 2002
ROCKDALE — Services for Lorine Robinson, 73, of Minerva are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.
The Rev. Calvin Springer of the Rockdale Full Gospel Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Minerva Cemetery.
Mrs. Robinson died Sunday at her home.
She was born in Yoakum, Texas, and lived in Minerva since 1978. She formerly lived in Houston and was a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston. She also was a child care provider in Houston and Minerva. She attended the University of Houston.
Survivors include her husband, J.T. Robinson of Minerva; a son, John Mark Robinson of Waco; a brother, Harold Ray Williams of Minerva; and three grandsons.
Arla Kay Mattern

NAVASOTA — Services for Arla Kay Mattern, 56, of Navasota are set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.
The Rev. Luppe Sanchez of the Bible Baptist Church in Conroe will officiate. Burial will be in the Plantersville Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Mattern died Saturday in Montgomery.
She was born in Davenport, Iowa, and was a cook for Southern Breeze Plantation. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, Adolph D. Mattern of Navasota; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Modina Pulley of Oklahoma; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ramona and Arnold Hanlin Jr. of Montgomery, Texas, and Barbara and George Kelley of Cut & Shoot, Texas; two brothers and a sister-in-law, David and Thearsa Cooper of Navasota and Terry Cooper of Kenedy, Texas; five brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Patrick Mattern, Junior Mattern and Mark Mattern, all of Montgomery, Johnny Mattern of Plantersville and Paul and Sally Mattern of Hempstead; seven sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law, Berndean and Thomas Creighton of Madisonville, Irean West, Angie and Bobby Wesolick, Judy and Jim Walker, Betty and Willie VanHouton and Mary Mattern, all of Dobbin, Texas, and Monica and David Crumbley of Austin; 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Emily LaFerriere Richards

Emily LaFerriere Richards, 92, of Iola died Monday in Sherwood Nursing Home.
Her body was cremated and the remains will be buried in New Jersey at a later date.
Local arrangements are under the direction of Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.
She was a retired homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul G. Richards Sr.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jack and Kathy Richards of Iola and Paul G. Jr. and Joan Richards of Carthage, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Nick Latorre of New Jersey; a brother, Ernest LaFerriere of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Rita Adamski and Anne McLean, both of Carthage; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Jim Wallace Stegall

FRANKLIN — Services for Jim Wallace Stegall, 41, of Franklin are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Franklin.
The Revs. Jim Manning of Franklin, Justice Anderson of Fort Worth and Lee Caldwell of Easterly will officiate. Burial will be in the Franklin Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the McCauley Funeral Home in Franklin.
Mr. Stegall died Sunday in Franklin.
He was born in Hearne and was a longtime resident of Franklin. He attended Franklin High School and was a self-employed rancher. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Liz Stegall of Franklin; a daughter, Britney Stegall of Franklin; two sons, Buddy Stegall and Bryce Stegall, both of Franklin; his mother, Kathleen Stegall of Franklin; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Tina and Mike Ely and Teresa and Don Martin, all of Franklin; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Bina Stegall of Franklin; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Miguel A. Tierrafria Jr.

A rosary will be recited and memorial services will take place for Miguel A. Tierrafria Jr., 21, of College Station at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.
The Rev. Victor Robles of Santa Teresa Catholic Church will officiate.
Mr. Tierrafria died Thursday in College Station Medical Center as the result of an auto accident.
He was born in Houston and lived in College Station for 12 years. He was a student at Blinn College and worked for the food service department at Texas A&M University. He was a Catholic.
Survivors include a son, Adrian Jesus of College Station; the mother of his son, Nereida Martinez of College Station; a brother, Wilfredo Tierrafria of College Station; two sisters, Anna Tierrafria and Mayella Tierrafria, both of College Station; his parents, Mercedes and Miguel Tierrafria of College Station; and grandparents, Elena and Gabriel Robles of Bryan.
Mark Elton Wiese

MADISONVILLE — Services for Mark Elton Wiese, 44, of North Zulch are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Madisonville Funeral Home.
The Rev. Paul Dickson of the First Baptist Church in North Zulch will officiate. Burial will be in the Willowhole Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Wiese died Sunday.
He was born in Houston and lived in North Zulch for 15 years. He was a graduate of M.B. Smiley High School in Houston and was employed at Rick-Mar Fabrications in Bryan.
Survivors include his wife, Debbie Wiese of North Zulch; two sons, Jared Wiese and Matthew Wiese, both of North Zulch; a sister and brother-in-law, Joanna and Chester Barnett of Crosby, Texas.
