Dr. Ronald Edd Roberts

Dr. Ronald Edd Roberts of Friendswood, formerly of Baytown, passed away Friday, February 03, 2006, at a Webster Hospital. He was born December 21, 1934 in Abbott, Texas to Thomas Roy and Lillie Ethel Roberts. He was a 1953 graduate of Abbott High School. After graduation, he attended the University of North Texas, where he received his B. S. degree in 1957. Roberts worked as a public school teacher and a college instructor. From 1957 to 1959, he worked one year in Farmers Branch Independent School District and one year in Midland Independent School District. In 1965 he received his M.S. degree from Baylor University. That same year, he began working at Houston Baptist College and stayed there for three years. In 1968, he began working at Lee College in Baytown, Texas, and taught there until 1995. While working at Lee College he also received his Ed.D. degree from the University of Houston in 1978 and served as the coordinator of the Lee College Symposium on Public Affairs from 1987 to 1995. Roberts served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1960 to 1967, representing the 54th and the 42nd districts. He also served as Board Member and Chairman of the Sterling Municipal Library from 1987 to 1994. Roberts was a member of the Hillsboro Jaycees, the Board of Stewards for the First Methodist Church of Hillsboro, Texas, the Administrative Board for St. Paul’s Methodist Church of Hillsboro, and the Administrative Board of the Bering United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. He was also a Junior and Senior Warden for the All-Saints Episcopal Church in Baytown, Texas, a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, Phi Alpha Theta, The National Political Science Honor Society, The National History Honor Society, and the Vice President of the Texas Junior College Teachers Association.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, James Roberts, William Roberts and twin brother, Donald Roberts, and sister, Mary Jordan. He is survived by his daughters, Kristy Roberts Garren and her husband Richie, and Amy Elizabeth Roberts and fiancé Max Keath, sister Nell Roberts, the mother of his daughters, Linda Kelly and her husband Lee, grandchildren, Alayna Kristine Roberts and Amber Marie Garren.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 pm at Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, 2:00 pm at the Chapel of Crespo and Jirrels with David Mohlman officiating. Burial will be Wednesday, 1:00 pm at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. Arrangements have been entrusted to Crespo & Jirrels Funeral and Cremation Services, 6123 Garth Rd., Baytown, Texas 281-839-0700.

Jarel Joseph Derese Sr.

Jarel Joseph Derese Sr. passed away Saturday, February 4, 2006, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 31, 1924, in Port Arthur, Texas, to Zachary and Lydia (Dailey) Derese. He was an Operator at the Texaco Refinery for 36 years and a member of the Pentecostal First Apostolic Church of Highlands. He was a veteran of WWII in the Army Air Corps and flew 36 missions while stationed in Italy. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and spending time with his family. He always had a joke to tell.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Ruth Broussard, brother, Aaron Derese and stepsons, Terry J. Cook and Larry Andrew Cook. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Edith Derese of Highlands, sons, Joe Dreese and wife Rebekah of Kerrville, Gary James Cook of La Porte, daughter, Renee Joye Derese of Dallas, brothers, Billy Derese of Dallas, Andy Derese of Newton, sisters, Joye Derese of Nederland, Betty Derese of Nederland and Ola Derese of Beaumont, six grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 5 to 8 pm at the First Apostolic Church in Highlands. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, 10:00 am at the Church with Rev. Tommy Jackson officiating. Burial will be at 3:00 pm at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Groves, Texas. Honoring the family as pallbearers will be Mike Hicks, Joe Derese, Craig Landry, Zack Derese, Scott Allen, Jay Cook, Gary Cook, and Don Toups. Arrangements have been entrusted to Crespo & Jirrels Funeral and Cremation Services, 6123 Garth Rd., Baytown, Texas 281-839-0700.

Peri Lea Cain

Peri Lea Cain, 51, passed away January 26, 2006. She was preceded in death by her mother Faye Cain, she is survived by her partner in life Cindy Haas of Dallas, father Norman Cain and wife Margie of Moss Hill, sister Kay Hancock of Palacious, sister, Dee Dee Guest and husband David of La Porte, niece Tedra Tubbs of Baytown, Niece Kaylea Guest of La Porte, nephew Gage Guest and wife Melissa of La Porte, and Aunt Marion Young of Pasadena.

Memorial Services will be held at Houston National Cemetery Chapel, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston at 12:00 Noon, Tuesday, February 7, 2006.

Henry J. Braun, Jr.

Henry J. Braun, Jr., 82, passed away after a brief but courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born in Houston on November 20, 1923, to Henry J. and Lillian Louise (Anderson) Braun and was raised in the Heights. After graduating from Reagan High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country during World War II aboard the naval transporter, U.S.S. Tennessee.

After receiving an honorable discharge, he joined Humble Oil and met his sweetheart Rosalie Hultquist while he was working in Ganado.

They were married on January 15, 1947. While working for Humble Oil, they lived throughout southeast Texas and in 1976, finally settled in Baytown with their two sons, Joe and Sam. They were active members of Cedar Bayou Baptist Church, and following his retirement from Exxon in 1986, he drove in the church vanpool, transporting underprivileged children to Sunday school. He was known for his beaming smile and his trademark laugh. He loved the Lord, read his Bible daily, and enjoyed listening to gospel music. His hobbies also included bay fishing and baking, a pastime he developed after his retirement; he could make a mean batch of fudge.

In 2003, the Lord took his beloved Rosalie after 56 years of marriage. His loving family includes his sons, Joe Braun and wife Lisa, and Sam Braun and wife Sandra, all of Baytown; sisters, Sophie Mize and husband Bill of Bellaire, and Lillian Derden of Houston; grandchildren Rachel Smith, Bonnie Howard, Jason Dixon, Alexa Adcock and Leslie Braun; and great-grandson, Jagger Duncan.

Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Crespo & Jirrels, 6123 Garth Road. A service of remembrance will be held Tuesday, February 7, 2006, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Crespo & Jirrels, with Dr. Mark Broussard of Cedar Bayou Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Garden Cemetery. Honoring the family as pallbearers will be the deacons of Cedar Bayou Baptist Church.

The Braun family wishes to thank the staff at Remington Park and to Odyssey Hospice for the excellent care given to their father and grandfather.

Consuelo Yepez

Consuelo Yepez, 77, went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 4, 2006 at her residence with her family gathered at her side. She was born in Baytown on September 3, 1928. She was the first Hispanic Brigadier in Baytown and graduated from Robert E. Lee in 1948. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Consuelo was a lifetime member of the Wellness Center at Lee College. She worked at San Jacinto Methodist hospital for 31 years as an O.R. Technician. She was serving in central supply department at the time of her retirement. She enjoyed dancing, traveling and loved spending time with her family and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Fermin and Juana Flores Juarez. Sisters; Josephine De Hoyos and Fedencia Olachia

Survived by: husband of 57 years- Juan E. Yepez of Baytown, Texas.

Daughter and son-in-law; Myrta and Saul Hernandez of Baytown, Texas.

Son and daughter-in-law; Eloy G. And Suzanne Yepez of Baytown, Texas.

4-sisters and 1 brother-in-law; Francis Contreras of Baytown, Texas, Dominga Vegas of Plano, Texas, Sophia Garcia, Socorro and Emilio Barajas of Baytown, Texas.

2-brothers and 1 sister-in-law; Asuncion and Paula Juarez, Anselmo Juarez of Baytown, Texas.

Sisters-in-law; Celedonia Razo, Julia Campos, Maria and husband, Antonio Perez, Jr. All of Baytown, Texas.

Brothers-in-law; Gregorio Yepez of Pasadena, Texas, Martin and wife, Ophelia Yepez of Baytown, Texas.

4-grandchildren; Jeremy and Yvonne Hernandez of Houston, Texas; Ryne and Alyssa Yepez of Baytown, Texas.

Numerous other nieces, nephews and a host of friends

For those desiring, memorials may be given to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Her family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. at Earthman Funeral Home with a rosary being recited at 7 p.m. on today.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with father Dwight Canizares officiating. Interment will be at San Jacinto cemetery . Pallbearers will be: John Juarez, Martin Yepez, Arturo Contreras, Lucas Vegas Jr., Efrain Garcia, Mark De Hoyos.

Honorary pallbearers will be; Jeremy Hernandez, Ryne Yepez, Richard Olachia Jr., Freddie Delgado.

Homegoing arrangements are under the direction of Earthman Funeral Directors.

Corey Huffman

Corey Huffman, 18 of Old River, died Thursday at M.D. Anderson in Houston after a long battle with Leukemia.

He was born April 30, 1987 in Houston, was a longtime resident of Old River, a senior at Dayton High School, very active in the Future Farmers of America and was passionate about his animals. Corey was a member of the Old River Baptist Church and enjoyed hanging out at home with his friends and playing his Play Station with his friends.

Erletha McGuire

Erletha F. McGuire, 69, of Highlands, passed away on Friday night in a Pasadena hospital. The family will receive visitors from 5pm-9pm on Monday at Sterling-White Chapel in Highlands. Funeral Services will be held at 10am on Tuesday at Sterling-White Chapel in Highlands. The Rev. Richard T. Kleiman will officiate. Committal services and interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Baytown.

Hannah Harpster

Hannah Leora Harpster, 5, of Highlands, peacefully climbed into the lap of our Lord on Wednesday night. Her family will receive visitors from 5pm-9pm on Saturday at Sterling-White Chapel in Highlands. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the First Baptist Church in Highlands. Pastor Tim Edwards will officiate.

Hannah was born on March 23, 2000 in Baytown to parents James M. Harpster Jr. and Melissa Ann Wooten Harpster. She was a lifetime resident of Highlands and attended B.P. Hopper Elementary School. Hannah was a bright and shining star to all she met. She is fondly remembered by her family as a little Diva who loved to dress up in all kinds of pretty clothes. Although she was a little princess, she adored her big brother and would tenaciously stick up for him when he was in trouble. Hannah’s ambition was to become a missionary. She truly loved everyone but was always very excited to see babies or other children. Most of all, Hannah was a beautiful person who was full of life and a source of inspiration to so many.

Haywood Pitre

Mr. Hayward Pitre, 76, of Baytown, Texas passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at his residence.

Mr. Pitre was born in Ville Platte, LA on December 10, 1929 to Joseph and Olivia Pitre. He has lived in the Baytown Community for 22 years and he was a Member at Little Flock Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. John L. Bates, Pastor. Mr. Pitre was a retired presser at a local cleaners.

Elizabeth Wilkes

Elizabeth Wilkes went to be with her Lord and Savior February 2, 2006 at a local hospital. She was born in Votaw, TX. October 27, 1922. She had been a resident of Highlands and Baytown area most of her life. She enjoyed traveling, going to Rome and other foreign cities. She also enjoyed gardening and canning vegetables, raising many different types of flowers but most of all enjoyed her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jose Garza

Jose Efrain Garza, 85, formerly of Robstown, Texas passed away Thursday, February 2, 2006 in a Baytown hospital. Born in Robstown on November 18, 1920, he was one of four children born to Matilde and Celia (Benavidez) Garza. Preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma Pruneda Garza; and son, Jose Efrain Garza, Jr., he is survived by his children, Roman Garza and wife Alicia of Lancaster, TX, Dalia Rodriguez and husband Juan of Baytown, and Diana Finney of Mineral Wells, TX; brothers, Jose Romeo Garza and wife Estella of Carrolton, TX; sisters, Graciela Elizondo and Esther Reyna of Robstown; daughter-in-law, Martha Morales Garza of Houston; 17 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 9 great-great- grandchildren.

Willie Kovalcik

Willie Earl Kovalcik, 54, of Crosby, passed away at his home on Sunday, January 29, 2006. Visitation was held from noon until 2 pm on Friday, February 3, 2006 at

Sterling-White Chapel in Highlands.

Graveside services followed at White Cemetery in Highlands. Rev. Larry Koslovsky officiated.

Willie was born on October 17, 1951 in Baytown to parents Albert Kovalcik and Alice Jean Warnke Kovalcik. He was a lifetime resident of Crosby where he worked as a ranch hand at Murphy Ranch. Willie was an outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and spending time at the deer lease.

Louise Hunt Bowman

Graveside services for Louise Hunt Bowman, 89, of Jonesboro, Arkansas and formerly of Alto and Baytown will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Old Palestine Cemetery in Alto with Rev. Odis Bryan officiating. O.T. Allen & Son Funeral home of Alto will direct services.

Mrs. Bowman died Tuesday, January 31, 2006 in Jonesboro. She was born in Wells, Texas to William and Mary Hunt. She lived much of her adult life in Baytown, Texas before moving to Jonesboro in 1979. She was a homemaker and retired from Sears where she worked in advertising. She attended the Alto Missionary Baptist Church in Alto when living in Alto. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters, Maggie Sessions, Mary Andlauer, Annie Hunt, 2 brothers, William and Wallace Hunt.
