Jean Carlton Lowery
November 26, 1945 - November 11, 2002
Jean Lowery has died of breast cancer at home in College Station, Texas, attended by her family and friends. She stepped from time into eternity to be with God through His son, Jesus Christ, Monday evening, November 11, 2002. She was born Phyllis Jean Carlton, November 26, 1945, to Freda May Rayburn and Adrian Robert Carlton in New Braunsfel, Texas. During Jean’s early years the family lived in DeLand, Florida, her father’s hometown. Her first school years were in Alpine, Texas, where the family operated a Tom’s Peanut distributorship. Later the family moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico, where Jean completed her school years and met her future husband William R. (Bill) Lowery. After graduating from Carslbad High School, Jean attended school at McMurry College in Abilene and at Texas A&I in Kingsville, Texas. She then married her high school sweetheart, at St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Bryan, Texas, August 21, 1967.
Jean was among the first women attending Texas A&M University without special admittance status. Despite feeling rather unwelcome by some of the student body, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1972 and became an ardent advocate for Texas A&M. Afterward she followed her husband into a two-year tour with the U.S. Air Force, where she began her career as a teacher in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
Jean had a passion for teaching children and helping parents; teaching important professional curricula with caring discipline and with God’s love. When her own three sons were young she mixed God’s love with solid teaching in mother’s day out programs and private schools in Austin, Texas, in Arlington, Texas, and Orlando, Florida. In 1991 Jean and her husband returned to College Station, Texas, where her gifted style of teaching graced Brazos Christian School for several years before she joined area public schools. She taught Kindergarten at Mary Branch Elementary School in Bryan and then at Southwood Valley Elementary School in College Station before illness closed her career in May, 2002. The impact of her radiant and loving teaching has been widely admired by parents, teachers, and administrators during her eleven year career in Aggieland. Jean will be missed by many in our community. She had a gift from God for seeing the good in everyone, and she worked at helping each person achieve their highest potential whether family, friend, fellow teacher, student teacher, young student or a student’s parent. Because of this, her life was filled with wonderful caring friends who provided a virtual flood of concern and practical care during her last weeks. For this her family expresses their deepest appreciation.
Jean was preceded in death by her father, both grandfathers, and by one grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Bill Lowery; her grandmother, Addie Rayburn of Kenedy, Texas; her mother, Freda Rayburn of Austin Texas; her brother Mike Carlton and wife Karen of Winnfield, Louisiana; her brother Charles Carlton with Tina Barras of Lafayette, Louisiana; her sister Gail Rowland and husband Gary of Spring, Texas; her son David Carlton Lowery with Kim O’Connor of Austin, Texas; her son Mark Rayburn Lowery of Fort Worth, Texas, her son Paul William Lowery who lives at home; and by her sister-in-law Sharon Lowery of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Friends will be welcome from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Saturday, November 16, 2002 at Memorial Funeral Chapel, 2901 Texas Avenue South, College Station. Funeral services will be held at Grace Bible Church, 700 Anderson Street, College Station, at 2:00 pm, Sunday, November 17, 2002 with burial services at College Station Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 205 E. 29th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803.
