Judy Backhaus

ROCKDALE — Services for Judy Backhaus, 43, of Rockdale are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.
The Revs. Brian Bauer of Peace Lutheran Church and Herb Lammert will officiate. Burial will be in the Rockdale I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Ms. Backhaus died Monday at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Rockdale and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. She was a graduate of Rockdale High School and Taylor Hospital Nursing School as an L.V.N. and Temple College as a medical lab technician. She was retired and was a volunteer for Heavenly Treasure in Rockdale and served on their task force.
Survivors include her mother, Betty Backhaus of Rockdale; a brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Kay Backhaus of Rockdale; a sister and brother-in-law, Janie and Steve Lightsey of Fairfield; two nephews; a niece; four aunts; and three uncles.
Memorials may be made to the Peace Lutheran Church Organ Fund.
Riley Hopper
June 19, 1913 — Nov. 11, 2002
ROCKDALE — Services for Riley Hopper, 89, of Lexington are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Lexington.
The Rev. Henry Adrian III of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.
Mr. Hopper died Monday in the Scott & White Hospital in Temple.
He was born in English, Ind., and lived in Lexington since 1998. He was formerly of Weslaco and was a warehouse manager for Allied Van Lines. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of the First Baptist Church and Men’s Sunday school class. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club in Weslaco.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonney Horton Hopper.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, James and Ginger Hopper of Sealy; a daughter and son-in-law, Trudy and Gary Holland of Lexington; a brother and sister-in-law, Deward and Rosa Hopper of Palmyra, Ind.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mamie Ruth Laswell of English, Ind., Helen and Robert Butler of Noblesville, Ind., and Norma and Everett Eickelberger of Florida; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
J.C. Maywald
Sept. 10, 1921 — Nov. 10, 2002
NAVASOTA — Services for J.C. Maywald, 81, of Shiro are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.
The Rev. Gene Beamon will officiate. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery in Shiro.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Maywald died Sunday in Grimes County.
He was born in Richards and was retired from Lone Star Cement. He was a member of the Grimes County Law Enforcement Association. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Maywald of Shiro; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Paul Welch of California and Mark David and Janet Welch of Sedona, Ariz.; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynda H. and Joe E. Hutfles of Byron, Ga.; two sisters, Helen Alley and Ceil Price, both of Richards; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Grimes County Law Enforcement Association.
Joseph Peter Rike
July 29, 1956 — Nov. 7, 2002
Services for Joseph Peter Rike, 46, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Monsignor John McCaffrey will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 to 9 a.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Mr. Rike died Thursday in Annandale, Va.
He was born in Germany and was a former life and health underwriter in College Station for 20 years. Mr. Rike began his career with the Protective Life Insurance Co., where his achievements included the Million Dollar RoundTable, the National Quality Award and numerous national sales awards. He worked with AMCO Insurance from 1992 until his retirement. He was a board member and past president of the Central Texas Association of Life Underwriters.
Mr. Rike was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bryan and served on the Parish School Board and in the Knights of Columbus. His involvement in St. Joseph’s Cub and Boy Scouts Troop 383 was extensive. He served for many years as cub master, den and pack leader and was the organizer of many scouting camps, activities and fund-raisers. He also was active as chairman and staff member for the Arrowmoon District. He also coached and served as a board member in Little League sports. Mr. Rike served in the Texas State Guard and the U.S. Army Reserves.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Marlene Virginia Miller Rike of Bryan; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas W. and Stacy Rike and James F. Rike, all of Bryan; his mother, Dolores Rike of Annandale, Va.; five brothers, James C. Rike Jr. of Burke, Va., Thomas M. Rike of Leesburg, Va., John M. Rike of Centerville, Va., Robert A. Rike of Richmond, Va., and Richard E. Rike of Charlottesville, Va.; three sisters, Suzan Rike Blazey of Lorton, Va., Sally Rike Hart of Charlottesville, and Mary Jane Rike Schon of Strafford, Pa.; numerous extended-family members; and two grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Joseph’s Catholic School Trust Fund, or to St. Joseph's Boy Scout Troop 383, at 600 East 26th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803.
Edward Earl Berry

Services for Edward Earl Berry, 46, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Bryan.
Evangelist Linda K. Meekins of Austin will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.
Mr. Berry died Saturday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.
He was born in Midland and lived in Bryan for the past three years. He was a member of the Mount Nebo Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Aron Berry of Midland; three daughters, Stephen Kay Berry, Linda Lavell Berry and Eshia Berry, all of Midland; a brother, Charles Wayne Berry of Bryan; two sisters, Dora Dean Davenport of Bryan and Linda Kay Meekins of Austin; his mother and stepfather, Fannie Berry Monroe and Louis Charles Monroe of Bryan; and five grandchildren.
Rodolfo S. ‘Rudy’ Canales

Services for Rodolfo S. “Rudy” Canales, 57, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Canales died Monday in Baton Rouge, La.
He was born in Uvalde and lived in Bryan since 1979. He was a truck driver for Baskin-Robbins, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was in the National Guard.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Olivia Canales of Bryan; two daughters, Mireya Canales of New Orleans and Mayela Canales of Bryan; two brothers, Celso Canales Jr. of Austin and Richard Canales of Maryland; two sisters, Delia Chapoy of Pasco, Wash., and Ora Canales of San Antonio; and one granddaughter.

Francisco M. Alvarez

Services for Francisco M. Alvarez, 77, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mr. Alvarez died Monday.
He was born in Chriesman and lived in Bryan since 1945. He was a food service laborer for Texas A&M University and a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church.
Survivors include three brothers and sisters-in-law, Valentine and Rebecca Alvarez of Bryan, Juan and Deia Nira Alvarez and Moses and Josie Alvarez, all of Dallas; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Francisca Alvarez Vega of Bryan and Mary Alvarez Castana and her husband, Victor, of Arletta, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Faye Marie Ledwell

MINERVA — Graveside services for Faye Marie Ledwell, 82, of Minerva are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Minerva Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.
Mrs. Ledwell died on Nov. 6 at the Richards Memorial Hospital in Rockdale.
Born in Oklahoma, Mrs. Ledwell was a homemaker and member of the Church of Christ. She also was a founding member of the Minerva Volunteer Fire Department and Minerva Water Corp.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Fletcher Ledwell.
Survivors include a son, Bill E. Ledwell of Oxnard, Calif.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Frieda L. Huff

Services for Frieda L. Huff, 87, of College Station are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Bryan.
The Rev. Neil Bockelmann will officiate. Burial will be in the Kurten Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.
Mrs. Huff died Tuesday at College Station Medical Center.
Born in Kurten, she was a lifelong resident of Brazos County. She was a housewife and member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Huff.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond G. and Eva Huff of Milano and David W. and Linda Huff of College Station; five daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy and Sam McAnally of Brady, Florene and Horace Schaffer, Bobbie and Kenneth Denmark and Virginia and J.C. Wager, all of College Station, and Margaret and William Day of Brenham; a brother, George W. Wiese of Gloucester, N.J.; a sister, Erna Schulz of Bryan; 21 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
