Services for Claude Brocksmith, 81, of Kurten are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Bryan.
The Rev. Neil Bockelmann of Bethel Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Kurten Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.
Mr. Brocksmith died Thursday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.
He was born in Grimes County near Anderson and was the owner and operator of the Brocksmith Grocery Store in Kurten. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, VFW Post No. 4692 in Brazos County and the Sons of Hermann Lodge No. 99 in Bryan. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Brocksmith of Kurten; a son and daughter-in-law, Owen and Connie Brocksmith of Kurten; two sisters, Eloise Kindt of Bryan and Ruth Sikorski of Wixon Valley; and three grandsons.
Memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church.
Karl Arthur Hanke
April 17, 1914 — Nov. 7, 2002
CAMERON — Services for Karl Arthur Hanke, 88, of Buckholts are set for 2 p.m. Sunday in the Kathryn W. Green Chapel of Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron.
The Rev. Jim Lafferty will officiate. Burial will be in the Sharp Cemetery near Cameron.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Hanke died Thursday in a Rockdale nursing home.
He was born in the Sharp community and was a farmer and rancher. He did radio and television repair as a hobby and served as crew chief operator for C-47s in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Fick Hanke.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joe T. and Abbie Hanke of Cameron; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Edmond Swonke
Jan. 20, 1920 — Nov. 7, 2002
NAVASOTA — Services for Edmond Swonke, 82, of Plantersville are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Plantersville.
The Rev. Edward C. Kucera Jr. of St. Mary’s Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.
Mr. Swonke died Thursday at his home.
He was born in Plantersville and was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber as an operator. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Navasota VFW. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine Swonke of Plantersville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Donald and Cathy Swonke and Alvin Swonke, all of Houston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Suzie and Ed Bill of Plantersville and Kathy and Roy Jones of Eustace; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leon and Inez Swonke of Conroe and Herbert and Ann Swonke of Plantersville; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Florine and Willie Hock of Plantersville, Dolly Drozd of Tomball and Frieda and Charlie Lake of Navasota; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Plantersville.
David Douglas Vandiver

Services for David Douglas Vandiver, 48, of Lago Vista and formerly of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.
The Rev. Robert Leslie will officiate. Burial will be in the Bryan City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to the time of the services Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Vandiver died Wednesday in Northeast Methodist Hospital in San Antonio.
He was born in Kingsville and was employed by Aflac Insurance Co. as a salesman. He was a graduate of Bryan High School and attended Texas Tech University. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a Presbyterian.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Vandiver.
Survivors include a daughter, Ashley Vandiver; a step-daughter, Nora DeLaRosa; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Amy Vandiver; a sister, Rhonda Vandiver; and his mother, Martha T. Vandiver.
David Douglas Vandiver
Feb. 26, 1954 - Nov. 6, 2002
David Douglas Vandiver, 48, of Lago Vista and formerly of Bryan, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 9:25 p.m. from complications due to bacterial pneumonia. David was born Feb. 26, 1954 in Kingsville, TX.
David was preceded in death by his father, Ronald M. Vandiver, and by his wife, Nora, who died May 3, 2002.
Survivors include his mother, Martha Vandiver; one daughter, Ashley Vandiver; brother and a sister-in-law, Richard & Amy Vandiver; one sister, Rhonda Vandiver; and a stepdaughter, Nora DeLaRosa; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces.
Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Hillier Funeral Home with Dr. Robert Leslie officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home on Monday. Interment will be in Bryan City Cemetery.
Fritz W. Wellmann Jr.

BRENHAM — Services for Fritz W. Wellmann Jr., 77, of the Washington community are set for 3 p.m. Sunday at Friedens United Church of Christ in Washington.
The Rev. Ron Trimmer will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.
Mr. Wellmann died Friday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.
He was born in Washington and was a retired farmer. He was a former justice of the peace of Precinct 1 in Washington County. He served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic and Pacific theaters during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Schroeder Wellmann of Washington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Jane Wellmann of Washington and Charles Neal and Sharon Wellmann of Conroe; a daughter, Debbie Wellmann of Washington; two brothers, Bennie Wellmann and Melvin Wellmann, both of Washington; three sisters, Leona Lunsford and Minetta Grice, both of Navasota, and Mildred Schroeder of Anderson; a brother-in-law, Charles Schroeder of Anderson; and three grandchildren.
James Richard Pyles
Oct. 9, 1923 — Nov. 7, 2002
Private services for James Richard Pyles, 79, of Bryan will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.
Mr. Pyles died Thursday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.
He was born in Jerome, Ohio, and lived in Bryan several years. He was a supervisor for a telecommunications company and was a Protestant.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Birchfield of Bryan; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
Jerry Walker McFarland

CALDWELL — Services for Jerry Walker McFarland, 66, of Caldwell are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell.
The Rev. Steve Stigler will officiate. Burial will be in the Caldwell Masonic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. McFarland died Thursday in Burleson/St. Joseph Health Center.
He was born in Tyler and received a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas in 1958 and a master’s degree in Engineering Management from Drexel University in 1972. He worked as a bridge design engineer at the Texas Highway Department from 1958 to 1964 and retired in 1997 from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa., as director of planning, design and construction after 33 years of service to the university.
He served in the Texas Air National Guard from 1961 to 1964 and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Air Force at the rank of first lieutenant in 1971. He was a member and chairman of the administrative board and finance committee of the Clifton United Methodist Church in Clifton Heights, Pa., and was president, chairman and board member of the Chamber of Commerce of West Philadelphia.
He served as head coach of the Drexel University rifle team and was technical advisor to WKDU, the Drexel University student radio station. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, was a life member of the National Rifle Association and was a member of the Delaware County Field and Stream Association in Pennsylvania. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Caldwell.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Perry McFarland of Caldwell; a son, Perry McFarland of Swarthmore, Pa.; a brother and sister-in-law, Jon and Estelle McFarland of The Woodlands; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, including Phil and Cindy Perry and Hubert and Laura Perry, all of Caldwell, Earl Perry of Bryan and Floyd and Doris Carpenter of Fairfield, Calif.
Kenneth Ray ‘Bubba’ Burleson Jr.
Oct. 17, 1958 — Nov. 7, 2002
CENTERVILLE — Services for Kenneth Ray “Bubba” Burleson Jr., 44, of Tucson, Ariz., and formerly of Centerville are set for 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Walters Funeral Home Chapel in Centerville.
The Rev. Larry Ashley of the First Baptist Church in Centerville will officiate. Burial will be in New Salem Cemetery in rural east Leon County.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Burleson died Thursday in Tucson.
He was born in Houston and lived in Tucson for two years. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas and lived in Centerville off and on before moving to Tucson, where he worked as a landscaper.
Survivors include his parents, Kenneth Ray Sr. and Beth Burleson and Girthel and Dave Wilson, all of Centerville; a son, Nathan Ray Burleson of Dallas; a daughter, Miranda Burleson of Marlin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Scott and Sandy Wilson of Hearne and Mark and Debbie Wilson of Bremond; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Debbie and A.C. LaSalle of Madisonville, Clarissa “Pud” Burleson and Rachelle Ewart, both of Houston; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
