May 6, 1930 — Oct. 30, 2002

Services for Edna Mae McGrue, 72, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Ruby’s Chapel at Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

The Rev. Paul Ford will officiate. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. McGrue died Wednesday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was a lifetime resident of the Brazos County. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar T. Matejka of Bryan; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Moore, and J.D. and Joyce McGruder, all of Bryan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Aney and Edgar Fields Jr. of Bryan, Unice and Alfrey Thomas of College Station and Debra and John Jackson of Bryan; a brother, Walter McGruder of Houston; two sisters, Estella Davis and Jessie Mae McGruder, both of Los Angeles; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Abraham ‘L.C.’ Taylor
May 30, 1924 — Oct. 26, 2002

Services for Abraham “L.C.” Taylor, 78, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greater Tabernacle Baptist Church.

The Rev. D.N. Jones will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

Mr. Taylor died Saturday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was born in Robertson County and was a resident of Bryan for 54 years. He was a member of the Greater Tabernacle Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alaphy Taylor.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Payton of Lubbock; two brothers, Lee Taylor Jr. of Los Angeles and Willard Taylor of Bryan; and a sister, Ruth T. McNeil of College Station.

Lorenza Hearne Jr.
July 27, 1940 — Oct. 26, 2002

DALLAS — Services for Lorenza Hearne Jr., 62, of Dallas are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Navasota.

The Rev. Hubert Williams of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Courtney will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Courtney.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Hearne died Saturday at his home.

He was born in Grimes County. He was an operator for a construction company.

Survivors include a brother, Willie Z. Hearne of Houston; two sisters, Ethel L. Nelson and Doris M. Chatman, both of Houston; and his mother, Ola Mae Hearne of Navasota.

Mayola Fonteno
June 21, 1912 — Oct. 28, 2002

RICHARDS — Services for Mayola Fonteno, 90, of Richards are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church.

The Rev. Raymond Davis will officiate. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Paradise South Cemetery in Houston.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Navasota.

Mrs. Fonteno died Monday at Grimes St. Joseph Hospital.

She was born in Grimes County. She was a custodian for Sears.

Survivors include two nephews and one niece.

Jerry Kirk
Dec. 18, 1940 — Oct. 31, 2002

ROCKDALE — Services for Jerry Kirk, 61, of Rockdale are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale.

The Rev. Laurence Smith of Texas A&M Methodist Church in College Station will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Kirk died Thursday at his home.

He was born in Milano. He was an associate engineer with Alcoa in Rockdale and retired in 1996. He retired from Kirk Industrial Design in 2002. He was a 1958 graduate of Milano High School in Milano and attended San Antonio College for one year. He was a member of Rockdale Fair Board and was on the board of directors at the Rockdale Federal Credit Union, serving as secretary.

He was a member and served as president of the Evening Lions Club in Rockdale. He served for five years on the Rockdale School Board. He was the first president of Rockdale Girls Softball League. He served in the Rockdale Little League for 25 years and was an assistant Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop No. 710.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Kirk of Rockdale; two daughters, Vicky Kirk and Karen Laughlin, both of Rockdale; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Arnold and Reba Kirk of Alvin, and Andy Kirk of Rockdale; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Katheryn Williams of Big Sandy, Nell and Walter Odstrcil of Cameron, and JoAnn and G.W. Riley of Cameron; and one granddaughter.

Jasper Henderson
Aug. 6, 1924 — Oct. 27, 2002

HEARNE — Services for Jasper Henderson, 78, of Hearne are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the St. Emanuel Baptist Church in Hearne.

The Revs. C.M. Roach, James Baker, conductor, and O.W. Mack will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Hearne.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the Robertson Funeral Chapel in Hearne.

Mr. Jasper died Sunday in the Hearne Nursing Center.

Survivors include his wife, Katie Henderson of Hearne; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Vivian Williams and Lillian and the Rev. J.E. Baker, all of Hearne; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Janice and David Thomas of Temple, Alesia and Michael Starr of Carrollton, Cassie and the Rev. J. Montgomery, and Sylvia Thomas, all of Hearne; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Gregory Henderson, Steven and Carol Henderson and Cedric Henderson, all of Hearne; three sisters-in-law; eight brothers-in-law; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bernice Emma Wilson Cavitt
Aug. 11, 1929 — Oct. 25, 2002

HEARNE — Services for Bernice Emma Wilson Cavitt, 73, of Hearne are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Old Elam Missionary Baptist Church in Hearne.

The Revs. F.C. Lewis III and Walter Ward will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Hearne.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at Old Elam Baptist Church in Hearne.

Mrs. Cavitt died Friday at her home.

She was born in Calvert.

Survivors include her husband, Floyd Lee Cavitt Sr. of Hearne; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Dwight Murray of Missouri City and Regina and Adolph Price of Hearne; three sons and daughters-in-law, Floyd Lee Jr. and Debra Cavitt of Missouri City, Kenneth and Norma Cavitt of Mansfield and Glenn Cavitt of Hearne; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Elvy C. ‘Clark’ Gable
Sept. 26, 1910 — Oct. 31, 2002

HEARNE — Services for Elvy C. “Clark” Gable, 92, of Hearne are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hearne.

The Rev. Kenneth Byrd of Grace United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Norwood Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.

Mr. Gable died Thursday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was born in Rural, Ala., and was a longtime resident of Hearne. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Altie Gable.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Chalmers D. and Cindy Gable of Marion; two sisters, Jewell Abbott and Geraldine Quinn, both of Florida; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Sandra Louise Kovacs
Nov. 7, 1944 — Oct. 30, 2002

MADISONVILLE — Services for Sandra Louise Kovacs, 57, of Madisonville are set for 11 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Madisonville.

The Revs. Jeff Witcher, Vaughn Tatum and J.W.L. Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the Madisonville City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Madisonville Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. to the time of the services Monday at the church.

Mrs. Kovacs died Wednesday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Fort Worth and lived in Madisonville for 14 years. She formerly lived in Lawton, Okla. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she taught toddlers, sang in the choir and was a coordinator for special events. She worked as a secretary for Dr. Ron Kirkwood and also worked in the Madison County Courthouse in the district clerk’s office.

Survivors include her husband, Dale Edward Kovacs of Madisonville; her mother, Louise Musgrove of Madisonville; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Dayla Lawrence of Lewisville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Stacey and John Teresi of Orlando, Fla., Angie and Jerry Green of Austin and Lnnea Broach of Bryan; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Sandra Magee of Houston; and six grandchildren.

Shirley McAdams Mitchell
Jan. 16, 1951 — Oct. 30, 2002

MADISONVILLE — Services for Shirley McAdams Mitchell, 51, of Missouri City are set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Madisonville.

The Rev. S.L. Morris will officiate. Burial will be in High Prairie Cemetery in Normangee.

Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Mrs. Mitchell died Wednesday.

Survivors include her husband, Edward C. Mitchell; her parents, John and Jessie McAdams; three sisters; two brothers; and numerous other relatives.
