Birdie Lee Garrett
April 16, 1924 — Dec. 17, 2002

NAVASOTA — Services for Birdie Lee Garrett, 78, of Navasota are set for noon Saturday at Wesley Grove Baptist Church on Texas 30.

Louis Chatman will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Huntsville.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Navasota.

Mrs. Garrett died Tuesday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

She was born in Huntsville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Garrett. Survivors include four sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert Lee Garrett of Dallas, Walter Earl and Ethel Garrett of Wharton, Fred Lee and Tracy Garrett and Joseph Edward Garrett, all of Navasota; a daughter, Beverly Ann Garrett of Navasota; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Curtis and Anita Dickey of Bedias, Harrison and Vivian Dickey of Houston and Quincey Dickey of Navasota; three sisters, Clara Brantley, Edlece Collins and Inez Haywood, all of Houston; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Margaret R. Hierth
Sept. 16, 1912 — Dec. 18, 2002

Services for Margaret R. Hierth, 90, of College Station are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Bryan.

The Rev. Philip McLarty will officiate. Burial will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Chenoa Cemetery in Chenoa, Ill.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Hierth died Wednesday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

She was born in Chicago lived in College Station since 1946. A retired schoolteacher, she earned her bachelor of arts degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and her master’s from Texas A&M University.

Before her retirement, she taught at A&M Consolidated Middle School for 17 years. She was a 50-year member of the PEO Sisterhood, a 60-year member of Kappa Delta and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She belonged to the First Presbyterian Church, where she had served as a deacon and elder and was a member of the Women of the Church.

Survivors include her husband, Harrison Hierth of College Station; two daughers and a son-in-law, Sue Driver of Houston and Mary Margaret and Thomas Whipple of Arlington, Va.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1100 Carter Creek Parkway, Bryan, Texas 77802 or the charity of one’s choice.

Lillie N. Mize
Oct. 9, 1911 — Dec. 10, 2002

HOUSTON — Graveside services for Lillie Nell Mize, 91, of Houston are set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Caldwell Masonic Cemetery.

The Rev. Steve Johnson will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Caldwell.

Mrs. Mize died Dec. 10 at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston.

She was a native of Burleson County and was a retired administration worker for Ben Taub Hospital in Houston. Survivors include a son, Jack L. Laws of Killeen; a brother, Gerald Homes of Houston; three sisters, Aileen Hefner and Barbara Ervin, both of Houston, and Doris Groce of Caldwell; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Gertie Shepard
Aug. 3, 1914 — Dec. 13, 2002

LAMARQUE —Services for Gertie Shepard, 88, of La Marque are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Mercy Seat Baptist Church in Washington.

The Rev. G.A. McDaniel will officiate. Burial will be in the Evans Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to the time of services Saturday at Jones Funeral Home in Navasota.

Mrs. Shepard died Friday at Bayou Pine Care Center in Texas City.

She was born in Washington. She was a schoolteacher in the Brenham school district and principal in Bethune Elementary School in Industry.

Mrs. Shepherd attended Lincoln High School in Port Arthur, Huston Tillotson College in Austin and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Prairie View A&M University.

Survivors include a sister, Willia Bonner of Texas City.

Charlie Ray Brown
Dec. 19, 2002

DAYTON — Graveside services for Charlie Ray Brown, 79, of Dayton are set for 3 p.m. Saturday at Park Cemetery in Madisonville.

Burtis Dockery will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Mr. Brown died Thursday at his home.

He was a native of Hood and lived in Dayton 30 years. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 450 for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Brown of Dayton; a son and daughter-in-law, Connie Ray and Georgia Brown; two daughters and a son-in-law, Charley and Wayne Hopson of Dayton and Deborah Spence of Houston; a brother, Connie Glen Brown of Bryan; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Wayne Monroe Holligan
July 3, 1946 — Dec. 19, 2002

Services for Wayne Monroe Holligan, 56, of Bryan are set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Reliance Baptist Church in Brazos County.

The Rev. Ray Marshall and Joel Potts of Reliance Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Reliance Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Mr. Holligan died Thursday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was a lifelong resident of Bryan and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture. He owned his own land surveying company and was a member of the Professional Land Surveyors Association. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was a member of Reliance Baptist Church. He assisted over 300 A&M students in their preparation for jobs in the surveying field.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Holligan of Bryan; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Byron and Kathy Holligan, Lowell and Mary Ann Holligan and Gene and Myrtle Holligan, all of Bryan, and Jerry and Judy Holligan of Burnet; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Marta Celia Noriega
March 29, 1957 — Dec. 19, 2002

Memorial services for Marta Celia Noriega, 45, of Bryan are set for 6 p.m. Saturday at the Brazos Miracle Outreach.

Burial will be in the Tamihua City Cemetery in Vera Cruz, Mexico.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Noriega died Thursday at her home.

She was born in Tamihua, Vera Cruz, Mexico, and lived in Bryan since 1996. She was a member of Brazos Miracle Outreach.

Survivors include her husband, Jose Luis Noriega of Bryan; a son, Joe Louis Noriega of Bryan; two daughters, Yesenia Noriega and Keilah Noriega, both of Bryan; her mother, Crespina Meca; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Alfred William ‘Shorty’ Rogers
Sept. 18, 1919 — Dec. 20, 2002

ROCKDALE — Graveside services for Alfred William “Shorty” Rogers, 83, of Rockdale are set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale.

The Revs. Calvin Springer and Douglas Springer will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mr. Rogers died Friday in Richards Memorial Hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of Rockdale and a member of the Rockdale Full Gospel Church. He retired in 1989 after 39 years as an auto mechanic. He worked for Gaither Motor Co. in Rockdale for 23 years and owned his own shop for 16 years. He served in the Aleutian Islands and Germany for the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Charles Rogers.

Survivors include his wife, June H. Rogers of Rockdale; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and Richard Kubiak of Giddings and Karen Evonne Rogers of Brenham; three stepsons and a daughter-in-law, Alvin Nesbitt of Waco, Jessie and Tina Nesbitt of Rockdale and Ronnie Nesbitt of Rockport; five sisters, Barbra Edney of Kilgore, Bernice Shelander of Whitehouse, Alpha Morton of Rockdale, Doris Crim of Forest Grove and Charlene Wilhite of Milano; four grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Raymond E. Willis
May 26, 1920 — Dec. 19, 2002

MADISONVILLE — Services for Raymond E. Willis, 82, of Spring Branch are set for 4 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Concord Cemetery in Grimes County.

The Rev. Rusty Hicks will officiate. Burial will be in the Concord Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the J.M. Day Funeral Home Chapel in Madisonville.

Mr. Willis died Thursday at his home.

He was born in Iola and served in the U.S. Army Calvary during World War II.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Willis; and a daughter, Ava Willis.

Survivors include his wife, Docia Willis; two daughters and a son-in-law, Katie Watson of Oklahoma and Teresa and Darwin Ridgeway of Georgetown; five sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond Jr. and Fay Willis of Round Rock, Ronnie and Peggy Willis of Sattler, Glen and Jeri Willis of Spring Branch, Jettie and Becky Willis of Floresville and Gary and Lisa Willis of Pflugerville; 29 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
