Florene Heath McGuire

LONGVIEW — Services for Florene Heath McGuire, 77, of Longview are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.
The Rev. Dale Evans will officiate. Burial will be in the Plainview Cemetery in Normangee.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. McGuire died Sunday at her home.
She was born in Normangee and was a resident of Longview. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal faith.
Survivors include her husband, Pat McGuire of Longview; two brothers, Dude and Bobby Heath, both of Bryan; three sisters, Betty Jo Berry of Bryan, Patsy Sue Iverson of Bryan and Carolyn Rogers of Madisonville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Hazel A. Karz
June 23, 1909 — Jan. 20, 2003
Hazel A. Karz, 93, of College Station died Monday at Colton Inn.
Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.
She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., graduated from the Parson’s School of Design in New York and was an artist for McCall’s Patterns, designing the covers of their packages. She was a resident of College Station since 1997.
Survivors include several grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews, and a great-great-grandniece.

Robert W. Walker
March 10, 1928 — Jan. 19, 2003
Graveside services for Robert W. Walker, 74, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Bryan City Cemetery.
Deacon Bill Scamardo of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.
Mr. Walker died Sunday at Sherwood Health Care.
He was born in Elizabeth, N.J. He was a traffic engineer for Ohio Bell Telephone Co. for more than 30 years before his retirement. He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Janalee Walker of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Deborah Stockwell of Navasota, Sharon A. and Tony Neal of Westchester, Pa., and Dawn and Terry Self of Brenham; and eight grandchildren.
Movelda Holt Maddox
July 29, 1924 — Jan. 21, 2003
DECATUR — Graveside services for Movelda Holt Maddox, 78, of Decatur are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Oaklawn Cemetery in Decatur.
Mrs. Maddox died Tuesday.
She was a lifelong resident of Decatur and member of the First United Methodist Church. After retirement from the Texas Highway Department, she assisted Dr. Ed Maddox with his veterinary practice.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Ed Maddox of Decatur; a son and daughter-in-law, John E. and June Vanetten of College Station; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
Ocie Laurhea Hardie
Aug. 21, 1911 — Jan. 20, 2003
Services for Ocie Laurhea Hardie, 91, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Bryan.
The Rev. Rob Chandler of First Christian Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Rockdale.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hillier Funeral Home and from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church.
Mrs. Hardie died Monday at the Bluebonnet House.
She was born in Madisonville and lived in Bryan for 50 years. She was a retired bootmaker for Holick’s. Mrs. Hardie was a member of the First Christian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Caroll Hardie.
Survivors include two sisters, Nadine Bullock of Waco and Pauline Porter of DeSoto; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles L. Page
Dec. 1, 1934 — Jan. 21, 2003
Services for Charles L. Page, 68, of College Station are set for 10 a.m. Friday at Christ United Methodist Church in College Station.
The Rev. Jerry House will officiate. Burial will be in the Lynches Chapel Cemetery in Alto.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. A gathering will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the A. Frank Smith United Methodist Church in Alto, ending with a procession to Lynches Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Page died Tuesday at St. Joseph Skilled Unit.
He was born in Alto and lived in College Station for 30 years. A graduate of Texas A&M University, he was division head of fire protection training of the Texas Engineering Extension Service at the Texas A&M University System for 25 years and chief of the Brayton Fireman Training Field for 10 years. He was also chief of the Alto Fire Department and served on the Alto school board. He served on the executive board of IFSTA.
Mr. Page was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in College Station.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Page of College Station; three daughters, Melody Page of Houston, Connie Miserak of Plano and Polly Lowery of Melissa; a sister, Marcia Hassell of Alto; his mother, Mary B. Page of Alto; and four grandsons.
Memorials may be made to the Memorial Wall at Brayton Fireman Training School.
A.J. ‘Butch’ Leago
Sept. 20, 1937 — Jan. 21, 2003
NAVASOTA — Services for A.J. “Butch” Leago, 65, of Navasota are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.
Donald Anderson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will officiate.
Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Roans Prairie. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Leago died Tuesday in Navasota.
He was born in Houston and was a sheet metal worker.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne Leago of Navasota; two daughters, Lisa Hemann and Tasha Loftus, both of Navasota; three cousins and five grandchildren.
James H. Copp
April 28, 1925 - January 18, 2003
James H. Copp died January 18, 2003 at home due to complications of leukemia.
Dr. Copp was born April 28, 1925 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, the son of Vivian and Irene Sorenson Copp. He received his B.A. in 1949 from the University of Minnesota and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He received his M.A in Sociology in 1951, also from the University of Minnesota, and his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin in 1954.
Dr. Copp taught at Kansas State University and Pennsylvania State University and worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. before joining the faculty of Texas A&M University in 1972. Dr. Copp taught at Texas A&M until his retirement in 1999. He served as department head of Sociology and Anthropology from 1972-1981 and also headed Rural Sociology from 1972-1980. He loved to teach, was a mentor to countless undergraduate and graduate students, and was an active and inquisitive researcher. After he retired from Texas A&M he continued to teach as a Professor Emeritus.
He is survived by his wife Veronica; his daughter Christine Avery and partner Terry Johnson of State College, PA; his son John Copp and wife Peggy of Clovis, CA; his daughter Karen and partner Steve Hendrix of Iowa City, IA; his daughter Sarah and husband Humberto La Roche of Ocean, NJ; his daughter Martha and husband Jeff Supplee of Johnson City, TN; and seven grand-children.
There will be a memorial service in the All Faiths Chapel on the Texas A&M campus from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2003. The family will host an open house at their home immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Texas A&M Foundation and directed to the Memorial Scholarship Fund in the name of James H. Copp. Donations can be sent c/o John Knudsen, 601 Blocker Building, 4223 TAMU, College Station, TX 77843-4223.

Howard E. ‘Happy’ Caskey

Services for Howard E. “Happy” Caskey, 73, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Baptist Church.
The Rev. Kevin Randolph will officiate. Burial will be in the College Station City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station.
Mr. Caskey died Monday at his home.
He was born in Houston and lived in Bryan since 1991. He was a pre-trial release director for Montgomery County and a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Craig Caskey of Bryan; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steve and Beverly Caskey of Conroe, and Howard Loukanis of Houston; four daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Tommy Hughes of Houston, Janet and Wes Orvis of Suffolk, Va., Brenda and Milton Radke of College Station and Linda and Barry Callen of Bryan; a brother, George Caskey of New Caney; and nine grandchildren.
Cecil Vester Moore
Aug. 26, 1912 — Jan. 21, 2003
MADISONVILLE — Services for Cecil Vester Moore, 90, of Madisonville are set for 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Madisonville.
The Rev. Jeff Witcher and Dr. J.W.L. Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the Madisonville City cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Madisonville Funeral Home, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Mr. Moore died Tuesday.
He was born in Bristol. He worked on the family farm and graduated from Palmer Texas High School. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for 14 months in Wyoming and Arizona and in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. Mr. Moore came to Madisonville in 1934 and became part owner in a cafe with his brother. He also went to work for the post office. He was commissioned as acting postmaster for three years and became assistant to the postmaster and supervisor in 1973.
Mr. Moore was a member of the First Baptist Church and was ordained as a deacon in 1953. He had many different positions in the church, including treasurer from 1960 to 1982.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Moore of Madisonville; a son, Cecil A. Moore of Madisonville; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and James Manning of Tyler; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Madisonville Building Fund.
