Anna Stella Towns Hallaran
August 3, 1916 — March 12, 2003
“Grandma Hallaran,” as she was respectfully and affectionately referred to by friends and family members, passed peacefully in her home surrounded by family members Wednesday evening.
“Humble Servant of God” best describes this frail though not meek, yet distinguished lady, principled, disciplined, and firm of character. Phrases and sound bites are inadequate to fully describe the essence of Anna Hallaran. Her actions and way of life speak volumes to her character.
Anna Stella Towns was born in Dallas, where she attended Ursline Academy. Subsequently she was employed by the Agricultural Extension System at Texas A&M College, met and married Kenneth S. Hallaran, a prominent Bryan businessman, in 1937.
Frugal yet generous, she did not seek earthly fame nor fortune but derived contentment from taking care of those around her and helping those in need. She was involved in the Meals-On-Wheels Program, often bringing children or grandchildren along and instilling in them the duty and honor of service to fellow human beings. Involved with RSVP, she was a guide at the George Bush Presidential Library on the Texas A&M University Campus. An active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she enjoyed extensive research in family genealogy.
Being determined, strong-willed, and a proud lady, she did not allow her bout with polio to prevent her from doing anything. She raised three sons and two daughters, had, and will continue to have, a tremendous influence on numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Always busy with family, volunteering and various crafts, she became an excellent painter.
Anna now joins her husband, Kenneth (1997), and her youngest daughter Cynthia Ann (1995), a long-time employee of the College Station Parks and Recreation Department and the TAAF State Swimming Commissioner for many years.
She is survived by four children, Kenneth S. (Houston), Russell W. (Bryan), David F. (Houston), Dianna L. Ray (Bryan) and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss her greatly but cherish the memories. She provided a lifetime of love and support to her family, friends, and community.
A visitation will be held this evening from 5-8 p.m. in the Hillier Funeral Home and from 10-11 a.m. Monday in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in College Station. A Rosary will be recited this evening by Deacon Bill Scott. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Mike Sis officiating. Interment will follow in the College Station Cemetery.
The family is immensely appreciative of Hospice and requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be generously made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 502 W. 26th. Street, Bryan, Texas 77803. Anna would have wanted it that way.
We shall always remember you,
Grandma Hallaran
