Ray 'Big Dog' Chamberlain
Ray “Big Dog” Chamberlain, 54, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at his home in Jack County. A memorial service was held Sunday, Jan. 11, at The Ranch.
Mr. Chamberlain was born Feb. 2, 1954, in Fort Worth to the late Virginia (McSpadden) and Raymond Burl Chamberlain Sr. He married Susan Dian Thompson in Jack County. He was a musician. He was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Ray Chamberlain.
Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Susan Chamberlain; children, Little Ray Chamberlain, Audra Flowers, Jamie Chamberlain, Cutter Chamberlain, Brandon Ray Chamberlain, Brandy Chamberlain, Corey Chamberlain, Nokona Rae Chamberlain, Kody Chamberlain and Magan McCreary; five grandchildren; sisters Gennia Williams, Debbie Coonrod, Maxine Wright, Doris Taylor, Stacey Chamberlain; and brothers Randy Chamberlain, Kevin Chamberlain.
There will be a “Bike Run” benefit in the near future in Mr. Chamberlain’s honor, donations are welcome.
Dorthie Sharp
Former Jacksboro resident Dorthie Sharp, 76, died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at her home in Stephenville. Graveside services were Saturday, Feb. 7, at West End Cemetery in Stephenville with Dr. Phillip Adams officiating.
Mrs. Sharp was born on June 30, 1932, in Fannin County to the late Claude and Vera (Compton) Birdwell. She was owner of the Now & Then Shop, first at the Olney “Y” on Hwy. 281, then in Jacksboro and lastly in Stephenville.
Survivors include a daughter, Leslie Sharp McCurry and husband Ron of Stephenville; two sisters, Billie Puckett of Trenton and Brenda McCune of Red Oak; a brother, Tommy Birdwell of San Saba; and two granddaughters, Jessica and Chelsea McCurry of Stephenville.

Ruby Faye Hardeman
Ruby Faye Hardeman, 79, of Jacksboro died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, in Jacksboro. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Coker Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Woodrow Holman, Linda Barnett and Linda Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Hardeman was born March 15, 1927, in Jacksboro to the late Edward and Frances (Stone) Johnson. She married the late Alonzo Hardeman March 15, 1943, in Graham. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church in Jacksboro.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Sylvia Williams, and a brother, Roland Johnson.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Garner and Frances Ray; a son, Joel Hardeman; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Mary Jane Thurman
Former Jacksboro resident Mary Jane “Sunshine” Thurman, 87, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, in Dublin, Texas. Graveside services were Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at Mountain Home Cemetery with Bro. Gary Zeitler officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Coker Funeral Home.
Mrs. Thurman was born Dec. 28, 1919, in Cedarville, N.M., to the late Carl Miller and Mary Elizabeth (Marsh) Evans.
She married Melvin Roland “Windy” Thurman June 2 1937, in Senate. She was a nurses’ aide and a member of Southwest Baptist Church in Jacksboro.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Windy Thurman; five sisters; a great-granddaughter; and a step-granddaughter
Survivors include four daughters, Jessie Farmer and husband Carvel of Graham, Jackie McCutcheon and husband Dale of Plano, Joyce Cantrell of Wichita Falls and Beth Gandy and husband Earl of Dublin; a son, Richard Thurman and wife Verlene of Graham; a sister, Dorothy Morton of Edmonson; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren

C.W. Hamm
C.W. Hamm, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at his home in Perrin. Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at First Baptist Church in Perrin with Bros. Mark Sims and Brandon Helm officiating. Burial followed at Perrin Memorial Gardens under the direction of Coker Funeral Home.
Mr. Hamm was born May 28, 1922, in Herford to the late Thomas Winston and Mary Alice (Dickett) Hamm. He married Lucillia Angell April 8, 1944. During World War II, he spent one year in Northern Prussia as a prisoner of war. He was a truck driver and locksmith and a member of First Baptist Church in Perrin and Texas Baptist Camp Builders.
Survivors include his wife, Lucillia (Angell) Hamm of Perrin; four daughters, Janell Rowe Andrews and husband Bill of Wizard Wells, Kay Walker and husband Don of Liberty Hill, Alice Davis and husband Rick of Shannon, and Sharon Watson and husband Joe of Santa Anna; a son, Tommy Hamm and wife Judy of Jacksboro; 12 grandchildren, Dan, Mikel, James, Tiffany, Kathy, Tim, Jobe, Melody, Jason, Jeffery, Jeromy and Joshua; and 13 great-grandchildren, Amanda, Carley, Price, Evan, Elijah, Kellen, Max, Zack, Mat, Bryson, Zoe, Mariana and Mia.

Pearl Elizabeth Kee
Pearl Elizabeth Kee, 99, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, in Graham.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at Lunn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Tull, associate pastor of the First Baptist Church of Graham, officiating. Interment will follow at Restland Cemetery.
Ms. Kee was born Jan. 23, 1907, in Gorman to the late Travis and Laura (Cagle) Hogan. She married John A. Kee in 1925 in Munday. He preceded her in death Oct. 25, 1979. She was a homemaker and a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Alfred J. Kee; a daughter, Peggy Sue Kee; and a grandson, Gary Kee.
She is survived by three daughters, Virginia Kee and Alyce Cason, both of Graham, and Carol Leming of Bryson; four brothers, T.L. Hogan of Fort Worth, Odell Hogan of Lubbock, Hulen Hogan of Proctor and Carl Jones of Stephenville; a sister, Cordie Marie Newton of Fort Worth; five grandchildren; three great-grandchhildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
L.B. 'Luke' Smith
L.B. “Luke” Smith, age 87, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at his home in Windthorst. Services were held Sunday, Dec, 31, at Aulds Funeral Home in Archer City with the Rev. Jerry Alcorn, pastor of Grace Church in Grand Prairie, officiating. Interment followed at Antelope Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born July 31, 1919, in Archer County to the late Ernest J. and Alma (Saylor) Smith. He was a stock farmer and worked on the Prideaux Ranch in the 1930s and 1940s, and for Muleshoe Cattle Co. from 1953-55. He earned the honor of “Best Pen of Steers” at the Fort Worth Stock Show in 1964 and raised longhorns on his Wineglass Ranch in Archer and Jack counties since 1978.
He is survived by a sister, Jewell Bolton of Antelope; and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials to the North Texas Rehabilitation Center, 1005 Midwestern Parkway, Wichita Falls, TX 76308.
Oma Mary Ann Hicks
Oma Mary Ann Hicks, 95, of Jacksboro died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, in Jacksboro. Funeral services were Thursday April 19, at Live Oak Baptist Church with Pastor Craig Lile officiating. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Coker Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hicks was born May 19, 1911, in Pittsburgh, Texas, to the late Dee and Emma (Fowler) Knight. She married the late Henry L. Hicks, April 17, 1926, in Gilmer. She was a homemaker and a member of Live Oak Baptist Church. She worked as a nurse at Cox Nursing Home before its closing.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Wayne Hicks.
Survivors include four daughters, Edna Hale of Anna, Carole Williams and husband Bobby of Mesquite, Martha Bullard and husband Richard of Crowley, and Jan Preston and husband Roger of Kentucky; four sons Joe Hicks of Doddridge, Ark., David Hicks and wife Sharon of Jacksboro, Texas, Winfred Hicks of Sulphur Springs, and Bill Hicks and wife Susan of Austin; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Marcella Fay Jackson
Marcella Fay (Williams) Jackson, 68, went to sing with the angels Sunday, April 15, 2007. Funeral services were Wednesday, April 18, at Wiley Funeral Home in Granbury. Burial followed at Lynn Creek Cemetery in Jack County.
Marcella was one of four children born to J.L. (Bud) and Alma Williams, Aug. 1, 1938, in Hood County. She was a legal secretary for the Air Force at General Dynamics for several years. She married the love of her life, A.W. (Ted) Jackson, May 15, 1975, and moved to Jack County. Together they made a life in the cattle and oil industry. They had a gospel quartet and traveled to various churches around the country to sing at revivals.
After the death of her husband in 1987, she retired and moved back to Hood County to be closer to her family, where she resided at the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Melody Allen; her husband, A.W. (Ted) Jackson; her parents, Bud and Alma Williams; and a sister, Billie Durant.
Survivors include two daughters, Robin Jackson Ogle and Carol Lancaster, both of Granbury; two grandsons, Brady Ogle of Jacksboro and Jeremy Lancaster of Granbury; a sister, Alpha Lee Bowden and husband Jerry; a brother, Dean Williams and wife, Barbara; five nieces and nephews; 12 great-nieces and -nephews; three great-great-nieces and -nephews; and many friends.
W.L. Graves
William LaFayette “Bill” Graves, 96, died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at Azle Manor Nursing Center, Azle, Texas. Graveside services were Saturday, April 14, 2007, at Whitt Cemetery with Pastor Dennis Arnold officiating. Funeral arrangements were provided by Galbreaith Pickard of Weatherford. Pallbearers were his six grandsons, Bennie R. Graves, Tim Graves, Les Graves, Robert LeVine, Brian LeVine and Wayne Graves.
Bill Graves was born Nov. 26, 1910, in Whitt, Parker County, Texas. His parents were W.T. and Jewell (Stewart) Graves.
Bill was a passionate gardener and loved being outdoors working in his garden, even after two hip replacement surgeries and one knee replacement surgery, pacemaker implant and numerous other health problems. He learned how to lay out his garden rows with his riding lawn mower so he could make tracks for his wheelchair. He improvised or made his own gardening tools to fit his needs. He wanted to make sure that the older citizens of his community received fresh vegetables.
Bill was past member of the Whitt Cemetery Association and a member of Whitt Baptist Church. He has been written about in Birds and Blooms magazine, Texas Gardens and the Weatherford Democrat about his life challenges and his ability to overcome them and still grow a bountiful garden.
He and LaFawn have resided in Whitt since the early 1970s.
Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, LaFawn; two sons, Bennie and Judy Graves of Abilene and Walter and Cindy Graves of Springtown; a daughter, Ann and Dick LeVine of Azle; six grandsons, Bennie R. and Maggie Graves of Channelview, Tim and Rhonda Graves of Abilene, Les and Pam Graves of Lubbock, and Robert LeVine, Brian LeVine and Wayne Graves, all of Azle; two granddaughters, Debbie Graves of Azle and Shadoe and Mike Holifield of Fort Worth; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and cousins Roy Shaw and Sue Shaw, both of Weatherford.

Thelma Arena Plaster
Thelma Arena Plaster, 86, died Monday, April 30, 2007, in Jacksboro. Funeral services were Wednesday, May 2, at Coker Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Plaster was born on Oct. 10, 1920, in Jack County to the late William Ray and Elanor Arrena (Carter) Mathis.
She married Samuel Henry “Jay” Plaster April 5, 1936 in Jack County. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, “Jay” Plaster, Nov. 15, 1995; her parents; a son, Billy Joe Plaster; a daughter, Jean “Sissie” Plaster; and seven brothers and sisters.
Survivors include a son Charles H. Plaster and wife Carolyn of Jacksboro; a daughter-in-law Marjorie Plaster of Jacksboro; six grandchildren, Carla Jaye Castle, Donna Jo Burgess, Todd Plaster, Paula Jean Netherton, Charla Kaye Stonecipher and Staci Leann Hammons; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
MaeDell Armontroutt
Former Jacksboro resident MaeDell Armontroutt, 86, died Tuesday, June 12, 2007 in Granbury. Funeral services were Thursday, June 14, at Coker Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Armontroutt was born Sept. 21, 1920, in Olney to the late Joseph and Essie (Flatt) Tucker. She married Jack Armontroutt Dec. 19, 1969, in Graham. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Armontroutt, Aug. 9, 1997; a son, James D. Gregory; two sisters; and five brothers.
Survivors include two daughters, Aretta Lorin and husband Lee of Fresno, Calif., and Janice Moore and husband Phil of Granbury; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Marvin Homer Jackson
Marvin Homer Jackson, 95, of Jacksboro died Thursday, June 14, 2007, in Jacksboro. Funeral services were Saturday, June 16, at Coker Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. L.C. Smith officiating. Burial followed at Lynn Creek Cemetery.
Mr. Jackson was born March 18, 1912, in Squaw Mountain to the late James Brantley and Martha (Farris) Jackson. He retired after 40 years as an oilfield pumper for Standard Oil Co. He was a member of Squaw Mountain Assembly of God.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Lavada (Rich) Jackson in 1986; his second wife, Marjorie Jackson, in 1995; a son, Homer Ray Jackson; a great-grandson, Jacob Jackson; and seven brothers and four sisters, Minnie, Buster, Allie, Dolly, Henry, Carb, Dewey, Sandy, Herbert, Lora and Deb.
Survivors include a son, Collin Jackson and wife Barbara of Hurst; a daughter-in-law, Rita Jackson of Grapevine; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
