Whitney Joe Abshire
Orange - Whitney Joe Abshire, 90, of Orange, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov 27 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Orange. Father Joseph P. Daleo, the pastor, will serve as celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery on Meeks Drive in Orange. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Dorman Funeral Home in Orange with a christian wake/ rosary to be held at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Born on Sept. 7, 1920 in Crowley, La. to his parents, Mary (Trahan) Abshire and Elida Abshire, he moved to Orange at the age of four, he began working in the shipyard industry as a young man and he worked and retired as a self employed carpenter. Mr. Abshire was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Orange and he was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War, II. Mr. Abshire enjoyed the gardening of vegetables and grapes, training his dogs, he was a ham radio operator, his handle being “Bald Eagle”, he enjoyed using his computer and his cell phone and he most enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Alton Paul Durio, those who will most cherish his memory are his loving wife of 71 years, Lillian Moore Abshire of Orange; his daughters, Betty Davis and husband, Johnny “Dub” of Orange, Jean Malone and husband, Roy of Orange and Mary Banazak and husband, Norbert of Harrison, Ark.; his son, James Whitney Abshire and wife, Sandra L. of Orange; his step brother, David Lee Foreman and wife, Marilyn of Orange; seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren. Mr. Abshire is also survived by numerous extended family and friends.
Thomas Edward "Tommy" Hill
Thomas "Tommy" Edward Hill, 45, of Orange died Saturday, November 20, 2010, at his residence. He was born October 14, 1965, in Port Arthur to Donald and Blodwyn (Walker) Hill.
Tommy enjoyed car races, fishing, traveling and carrying on conversations with everyone. He was a very considerate, sociable and forgiving person. He served in the Merchant Marines as a Quarter Master. He was an oil inspector for Caleb-Brett.
He is survived by his wife Colleen Hill of Orange; daughter, Tess Nicole Hill of Nederland; sister Donna Hill of Nederland; and two nephews, Johnaton Barrett and Kody Hill of Nederland.
Memorial service will be 6:00 p.m. Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Broussard's, 505 12th Street, Nederland, with Brother Ronnie Henningen officiating.
Alma F. Robins
Orange - Alma F. Robins, 87, of Orange, passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at The Meadows in Orange.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Private services will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Robins was born in Charleston, W.V. on March 27, 1923, the daughter of Charles Stonewall Barnett and Ada (Partlow) Barnett. She was a homemaker and an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Orange.
For many years, she wrote Story Time for the Beaumont Enterprise. She was a longtime volunteer at Baptist Hospital in Orange and was an enthusiastic fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
Preceded in death by her husband, Walter Stewart “Stew” Robins, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Ronnie Theriot of Orange; son, William M. Robins of Mountain Home, Ark.; son and daughter-in-law, John S. and Angela Robins of Beaumont.
Also surviving are her grandchildren, Loretta Gomez, Bill Theriot, Korey Hester, David Clark and her great grandchildren, Taylor and Brennan Theriot.

Bertie Sanders
Bertie Sanders went joyfully unto the Lord, Monday, Feb. 21, 2011. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 24, 5 - 8 pm at Forest Lawn. Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 25, 1 pm at First Baptist Church in Vidor, with interment to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
She lived a long, full life and blessed many with her faith and compassion. Bertie was born Oct 10, 1911 in Singer, LA to Rev. Jasper and Adaline Nelson. She was the 4th child born out of 12. Bertie graduated from Hotel Dieu as an LVN in 1929. She enjoyed almost 50 years as a nurse in the Golden Triangle, having worked for doctors and home health as well as Beaumont Medical and Surgical Hospital from its inception, until her retirement.
Bertie was a member of First Baptist Church Vidor, where she was very active in the choir.She was a longtime resident of Rose City, where she grew her own vegetables and made magic in the kitchen. Her creed was all about healthy living and exercise, which afforded her such a long life.
Bertie was preceded in death by her beloved son, Harold Beeson, her parents, and 9 siblings.
She is survived by her brother, Prentice Nelson of Houston, and sister, Claudia Bellah of Rose City; granddaughters, Rhonda Beeson Moore and Mariah Beeson Colbert, both of Beaumont; great grandchildren Jasmine and Elizabeth Moore of Beaumont, Jennifer Moore of Groves, Trevor Beeson of Vidor, Zayda Colbert of Beaumont, and 1 great great grandson, Noah Tidwell of Beaumont.
She also has many nieces and nephews locally, as well as all over the US, and numerous friends throughout the Golden Triangle. She never met a stranger.

Darla Lynn Flanagan
Darla Lynn Flanagan, 56, of Bridge City, passed away Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at her residence surrounded by family and friends.
Memorial services will be held Friday, Feb. 25, at 10:00 am at the Cowboy Church of Orange County. Officiating will be Brother E. Dale Lee.
Darla was born August 21, 1954, in Port Arthur, to L.M. and Elouise Flanagan. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Shelley Melton.
She is survived by her daughters, Shannon Olivieri Ayres and Lauren Price Sinone; brother, Mark Flanagan and wife, Lynn and their son, Brian; six grandchildren, Evan and Connor Ayres, Dalton Dickson and Hayle, Jade, and Tyler Sinone. She also leaves behind her loving companion, Donnie Mulhollan and his son, Justin. Also left to cherish Darla’s memory are many lifelong friends.
Darla loved the outdoors, gardening, being on the water, and watching the spectacular southeast Texas sunsets. Being “Mema” to her six grandchildren meant the world to her.

Darlene K. Pokorney
Darlene K. Pokorney, 58, of Lake Charles, formerly of Deweyville, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.
A visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 25, from noon until 2:00 PM at Dorman Funeral Home, with a Funeral Service at 2 pm at the funeral home. The Rev. John Fortenberry will be officiating. Burial will follow at Trout Creek Cemetery.
She was a native of Winfield, Kansas; born on May 6, 1952 to Roy William and Beulah (Salder) Harper. She had lived the last 11 years in Lake Charles. She was formerly a resident of Deweyville for 30 years, where she and her husband owned Triangle Meat Market. She enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and going fishing. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Beulah Harper; brothers, Joseph Harper, Ralph Harper.
She is survived by her husband, William R. Pokorney of Lake Charles; daughters, Melissa Kay Sheppard and husband Steven of Deweyville, Julie Lummus and husband Tony of Deweyville; son, Bill Pokorney and wife Andrea of Beaumont; grandchildren, Crystal McClelland, Tori Brooke Lummus, Mackenzie Sheppard, Courtney Sheppard, David Michael Sheppard; sister, Beulah Armstrong of Winfield, KS; brother, Jerry Harper and wife Dee Dee of Deer Creek, KS.
She is also survived by her in laws, Marcia and Jerrel Huff of Deweyville, Jennie McCabe of Deweyville, Michael and Charlotte Pokorney of Wichita, KS.; nieces, Bonnie McCabe, Lisa Moore, Lorrie Unruh, Christal Crisco.
Dixie Lee Clinton Brint
Dixie Lee Clinton Brint, 91, of Orange passed away Tuesday, Feb. 22, in Beaumont.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday Feb. 26, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Bridge City. Officiating will be the Rev. Brad Morgan. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange.
Mrs. Brint was born Nov. 9, 1919 in Hugo, Oklahoma to James Taylor and Rosalie (Ward) Clinton. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Democratic Party and on the Child Welfare Board.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harrah W. Brint; son, Kurke Clinton Brint and brothers, John Ward Clinton and James Morris Clinton.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sons and daughters-in-law, James W. and Myrna E. Brint of Shreveport, LA and Wayne M. and Phyllis Brint of Little Cypress; daughter, Rosanne Weeks of Orange; nine grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be Andy Haidusek, John Galey, Wesley Brint, Wade Brint, Lance Skinner and Todd Ener.

Lucille Light
Lucille “Lucy” Light, 91, of Orange, went home to the Lord on Feb. 20, at Golden Years Assisted Living, surrounded by her family.
Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens near Bridge City. Officiating will be Dr. Douglas Caldwell of First United Methodist Church in Mauriceville.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the graveside.
Born in Clendenin, West Virginia on Sep. 25, 1919, Lucille was the daughter of Benjamin Harrison and Jeanetta Ellen (Armstead) Ashley. She worked as a legal secretary and was a certified public secretary. She was in the Women’s Army Corp, assigned to the Air Force Legal Department during World War II, and she later worked for Air/Sea Search and Rescue. She graduated from the West Virginia Institute of Technology. She enjoyed sewing, reading, composing religious music and lyrics, playing the piano, singing, and oil painting.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 55 years, John C. Light; two brothers, and one sister.
Lucille is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John A. and Laverne Light of Beaumont; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and James Lansford of Orange; grandsons, Benjamin Light of Beaumont, John D. Light and wife Karen of Katy, Mark Lansford and wife Michelle of Carrollton; granddaughter, Jamie Cabiness and husband James of Orange; and six great-granddaughters.
Marlene Reeves
Marlene Reeves, 86, of Pinehurst, passed away Monday, Feb. 21, at Baptist Hospital in Orange. Funeral services to remember her life will be at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, Feb. 24, in the Chapel of Dorman Funeral Home in Orange.
Officiating will be the Rev. Kevin Brown, pastor of First Baptist Church in Mauriceville. Rite of committal and Interment will follow services where she will be laid to rest next to her husband at Morse Cemetery in Buna.
Born on June 18, 1924 in Leesville, Louisiana to her parents, Clyde Richardson and Nora (O’Banion) Richardson, she was a lifelong resident of Orange, a homemaker and she had previous attended Circle Drive Baptist Church in Bridge City. Marlene was a kind loving lady who enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Her family will remember her for the many Sunday dinners that she cooked of Roast and Fried Chicken.
Greeting her at heavens gate and preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, Jessie P. Reeves, her brother, Cecil Richardson and her son-in-law, Randy Callahan.
Those who will most cherish her memory are her daughters, Diana Reeves of Orange and Wanda Callahan of Buna; her sons, J. C. Reeves and wife, Daisy of Orange and Mack Reeves and wife, Kristy of Mauriceville; her grandchildren, Chad Reeves, Wanda McGraw, Terri Lavergne, Candace Lawrence, Mickey Callahan and Belinda Molin; her fourteen great grandchildren and another on the way.
Marlene is also survived by numerous extended family. Pallbearers will be Chad Reeves, Mark McGraw, Mickey Callahan, Joey Lavergne, Chad Molin and James Lawrence. Honorary pallbearers will be her great grandsons.
Peggy Jane Swanton
Peggy Jane Swanton, 54, of Vidor passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, in High Island, Texas. Services to remember her life will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, Feb. 25, in the Chapel of Dorman Funeral Home in Orange.
Conducting the services will be Chris Eppler, minister with the Mauriceville Church of Christ in Mauriceville. A gathering of family and friends for a time of reflection will be from 5:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. Thursday at funeral home.
Born on June 30, 1956 in Enumclaw, Washington to her parents, Leonard French and Joyce (Umek) French, she had lived in the area for the last 31 years, she worked as a licensed vocational nurse at Renaissance Hospital in Groves and she was a member of the Church of Christ in Mauriceville. Peggy enjoyed fishing, camping, riding her motorcycle, surfing the internet and she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Peggy is preceded in death by her great grandparents, Johanna and Zigmon Fornalski and her grandparents, John and Johanna Umek.
Those who will most cherish her memory are her husband, Alan L. Swanton of Vidor; her daughter, Andrea Lynn Swanton of Vidor; her sons, Jeremy Swanton and wife, Elaena of Vidor and Brent Swanton and wife, Katie of Orange; her father, Leonard French of Oakland, California; her mother, Joyce Higgingbotham of Arizona; her sisters, Amy French of Graham, Washington and Greta Dorrance of Enumclaw, Washington; her brothers, Greg French and wife, Kay of Fort Smith, Arkansas and Mark French and wife, Annette of Gladwin, Michigan and her seven grandchildren, Bayleigh Swanton, Kaimen Swanton, Kyron Swanton, Brenna Swanton, Brice Swanton, Trevor Short and Shelby Short.
Ruby Mae Colson LeBlanc
Ruby Mae Colson LeBlanc, 87, of Orange passed away on Sunday, Feb. 20, at The Medical Center of Southeast Texas.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 1:00 P.M. in the Thompson Memorial Chapel of Clayton Thompson. Entombment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park.
Ruby was a resident of the Port Arthur and Groves aeas for over 20 years. She had worked in the canning department at Texaco before becoming a housewife. Ruby was a member of The Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband James LeBlanc in 1997.
She is survived by her sons, Robert and wife Cheryl Barbin of Georgia, Larry and wife Carolyn LeBlanc of Orange and Chris and wife Maria LeBlanc of Naples, FL.; five grandchildren, Robert and wife Allison Barbin , Todd and Eric Barbin all of Georgia, Brent and Chad LeBlanc of Orange.
Dempsey E. Brister
Dempsey E. Brister, Sr., 72, of Orange died Tuesday, May 17, at his home.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Orange with the Rev. Harold Nazworth and the Rev. Bill Burch, officiating. Burial will follow Orange Forest Lawn Cemetery in West Orange.
Visitation will be from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Born in Orange on July 24, 1938, Dempsey was the son of Ivy and Alma Francis (Williamson) Brister. He retired as an electrician from Mundy Construction and worked for 37 years at Levingston Shipbuilding. Dempsey was a licensed Baptist Minister and authored a biblical study entitled “Dispensational Lines.” He was a member of Hartburg Baptist Church, and IBEW.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, S.A. Brister and Billy Brister, and nephew, Justin Brister.
Dempsey is survived his wife of 54 years, Shirley Brister of Orange; sons, Dempsey “Eddie” Brister, Jr. and his wife, Tari of Spokane, Washington, and Mike Brister and his wife, Amy of Orange.
He is also survived by his brothers, Edgar Brister of Orange, Clinton Brister of Orange, and Paul Brister of Kirbyville; grandson, Colby Brister of Spokane, Washington; and granddaughters, Montana Brister of Spokane, Meghan Brister of Orange and Brook Brister of Orange.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Sammy Paul Brister, Warren Brister, Don Brister, Billy Brister, Colby Brister and Dewey Woods.
