William Shelby Perkins Jr.
1935 - 2012
A funeral service for William Shelby Perkins Jr., 75, of Mineola will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, at Mills Cemetery in Garland. Rick Childress will officiate.

Mr. Perkins died on January 28, 2012, in Tyler. He was born July 14, 1935, to William and Artie Perkins.

He is survived by daughters, Shelley Johnson and husband Doug of Mineola and Stephanie Drake and husband Roy Jr. of Mineola; brother, Ronnie Perkins of Duncanville; sisters, Doris Calvert and Betty Potts of Emory; grandchildren, Shelly Adley, Jennifer, Brittany, Brandy and Roy Drake III, Michael Surface, Krystal Vaughn, and Alexis and Jeremy Johnson; great-grandchildren, Molly Surface, Alyssa, Jace and Drake Adley, Bryan Melton, Jaelyn and Terrell Ashworth, Evan McKee and Cayden Vaughn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe Perkins; sister, Ruthie Cotten; and grandson, Douglas Johnson Jr.

Loreta Gowin
1929 - 2012
Services for Loreta Gowin, 83, of Emory were held on February 24 at Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Dunbar Cemetery.

Loreta died on Wednesday, February 22, 2012. She was born on January 6, 1929, in Merit, the daughter of Joseph D. and Della Powell Rogers. In 1945 Loreta married Alfie George Gowin in Emory.

She is survived by a son, Freddie Gowin of Grand Saline; brother. J. D. Rogers of Dallas; granddaughters, Reneé Armstrong and Tonya Grace, both of Edgewood; grandson, Clint P. Gowin of Wills Point; seven great-grandchildren; three nieces; and four nephews.

She was peceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfie Gowin; two sisters, Zelma Shinn and Myrtle Herring; three brothers, Edwin Rogers, Weldon Rogers and Mollis Rogers; and daughter-in-Law, Vicki Lynn Gowin.

Walter B. Ragsdale Sr.
1924 - 2012
Services for Walter B. Ragsdale Sr., 87, of Alba were held Friday, February 24, at Wilson-Bartley Funeral Home Chapel, Alba, with Montie Parker, Wayne Wolfe and Algie Allen officiating.

Burial was in Salem Cemetery, Alba. Pallbearers were Arlon Ragsdale, Waymon Ragsdale, Jeremy Ragsdale, Mason Ragsdale, Richard Allen, Justin Wolfe, and Bernard Dugger. Honorary pallbearers were great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ragsdale died Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at his residence. He was born May 22, 1924, in Alba to Harry Walter and Mamie Elizabeth Bennett Ragsdale.

He served in the Army during World War II and married Vonda Jean McCollum on February 22, 1951, in Mineola. He lived in Alba most of his life, worked in the maintenance department of the Texas Highway Department, and was a member of Emory Assembly of God.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Vonda Ragsdale of Alba; sons, Walter B. Ragsdale Jr. and wife Mary, and Micheal “Mike” Edward Ragsdale and wife Gloria all of Alba; daughter, Jeanie Craig and husband Larry of Alba; six grandchildren, Wynette Case, Annette Morgan, Lynette Weatherly, Michael Ragsdale, Jeremy Ragsdale and Mason Ragsdale; 10 great-grandchildren, Chris, Josh, Kenzie, Ty, Hunter, Madison, Kadence, Abby, Lucy and Harry B.; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alendor, Lorean and Goldie; and brothers, Guy, Hughlee and Elmor.

Gail Songer
1935 – 2012
Private services for Gail Songer, 76, of Emory will be held at a future date.

Mrs. Songer died Tuesday, February 21, 2012. She was born on June 18, 1935, in Dallas, the daughter of Reagan and Nano Carter Dixon. She married Sam Songer on June 3, 1968 in Dallas. She was a homemaker, loving wife, dedicated mother and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of Emory; daughters, Patricia Farmer, Tammy Turner and Sandra Marsh all of Emory and Kelly Gilbert of Leonard; sons, Buddly Little and Larry Songer both of Leonard, Brad Little of Randolph, Sammy Songer of Garland and Mark Songer of Grand Prairie; sister, Dorothy Watson of Irving; and brother, Reagan Dixon of Dallas; 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Songer was preceded in death by her parents; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements were provided by Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home.

Aaron Ward Cunningham
1925 - 2012
Aaron Ward Cunningham, 82, died February 2, 2012 at his home in Dallas, Texas, with his family by his side.

He was born December 26, 1925, in Point, Texas, to J. C.. and Era Cunningham.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Cunningham; sons, Kelly Cunningham and William Heeth; daughters, Joni Beth Felts and Teresa Cunningham; a brother, Layton Cunningham of Oklahoma City; and nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for a later date.

Delwin Freiberger
1922 - 2012
Delwin Freiberger, 90, of Longview, Washington, died February 23, 2012, at the Hospice Care Center in Longview, Washington.

Mr. Freiberger was born January 29, 1922, in Lone Oak to Jacob and Bertie (Asbill) Freiberger. His early education was in Rains County schools. He attended Stephen F. Austin University until his education was interrupted by World War II. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. He then finished his education at North Texas State University.

On June 22, 1947, he married Billie Grantham in Roswell, New Mexico. They lived in New Mexico, Texas and Wyoming.

Mr. Freiberger was an innkeeper in White’s City, New Mexico and Sheridan, Wyoming. He was a member of the Powder River Navy men’s coffee club, the Roswell and Sheridan Masonic Lodges, Rotary, the Elks and the Kalif Shriners.

He was devoted to business and providing for his family. He and Billie retired to Roswell, New Mexico in 1990 where they lived until 2009 when they moved to Longview, Washington to be near family.

Survivors included his wife of 64 years, Billie Freiberger; sister, Wilma Eibner of Phoenix; sons, Brian Freiberger (Ann) of Puyallup, Washington, Brent Freiberger of Phoenix; daughter, Jana Freiberger (Denny Morgan) of Longview; granddaughter, Erin Morgan of Longview; numerous nieces; nephews; extended family; and friends.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Bertie Young of Sulphur Springs and Barbara Ranier of Sibley, Louisiana; and brother, Winfred Freiberger of Norman, Arkansas.

Clair Russell “Gale” Gale
1954 - 2012
Graveside services for Clair Russell “Gale” Gale of Lone Oak, were held March 5 at the Dunbar Cemetery in Emory.

Mr. Gale died Friday, March 2, 2012. He was born on October 26, 1954, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Charles Edward Gale and Elaine German Lizen. He married Jamie M. Morgan in Rockwall in 1992.

He was a machinist by trade. He served two terms with the Navy during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Jamie Gale of Lone Oak; two step-sons, Eric Raymond of Plano and Deric Raymond of Terrell; mother, Elaine German Gale; brother, Richie Lyn Gale Jr. of Lone Oak.

Arrangements were under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home of Emory.

Beryl G. Osteen
1943 - 2012
Services for Beryl G. Osteen, 68, of Mineola were held March 5 at Sand Springs Baptist Church, Mineola, with Bro. Jim Parker officiating.

Burial was in Pilgrim Rest #2 Cemetery, Golden. Pallbearers were Jerry Shephard, Michael Elmore, Dennis Emerson, Willard Simmons and Dale Hoggatt.

Mr. Osteen died on Thursday, March 1, 2012, at his residence.He was born on December 14, 1943, in Dallas to Beryl and Hattie Mae Herman Osteen.

He married Carolyn Kaye Selby Wade on August 13, 1982, in Duncanville and lived most of his life in Duncanville before moving to Mineola six years ago. He had 32 years of service with the Texas Highway Department Road and Bridge as an inspector and had an income tax preparation business. He was a member of Faith Sunday School Class at Sand Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Osteen of Mineola; son, Larry Osteen and wife Jan of Malakoff; step-sons, Timothy Wade and wife Denise of McKinney, Jeffery Wade of Coffee City and Christopher Wade of Rockwall; brothers, George Osteen and wife Glenda of Shreveport, La., John Osteen and wife Sharon and Sydney Osteen and wife Debra all of Maypearl; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jimmy Osteen; and sister, Beverly Elmore.

Memorials may be made to Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital Phase I, 800 E. Dawson, Tyler, TX 75702.

Dr. Charles Burgess Ewing
1946 - 2012
Graveside services for Dr. Charles Burgess Ewing, 66, of Modesto, California, were held April 2 at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Alba with Bro. Kelly Burton officiating.

Dr. Ewing died March 21, 2012, at his residence. He was born March 6, 1946, in Victoria.

He graduated from Midland High School and joined the United States Marine Corp where he served two tours of duty in Vietnam as military police.

He moved to El Paso where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Texas at El Paso. He received his PhD from Washington State University. He taught speech at California State University in Bakersfield, California, and Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California, He retired in 2009.

Survivors include his brothers and spouses, Andy and Audrey Ewing of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and Ralph and Carole Ewing of Meridian, Mississippi; sister, Mary Jane Ewing Farmer of Van Alstyne; five nephews; five nieces; and three cousins and spouses, Ginger and Kenneth Patrick of Alba, Jerry and Larry Shoemaker of Collinsville, and Mikey and Allen Isbell of Galveston Island.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bush Norris Ewing; and mother, Mary Elois Woods Ewing Scott.

Arrangements were under the direction of Wilson-Bartley Funeral Home of Alba

Jewel H. “Chief” McMillan
1949 - 2012
Funeral services for Jewel “Chief” McMillan of Lake Jackson were held March 31 at Emory Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Thomas and Rev. Willie R. Byrd officiating.

Interment was at Hopewell Cemetery in Emory. Pallbearers were Connie Clayton, Mitchell Edwards, Delenis Garrett. Tony Garrett, Clifford McMillan and Jerry A. Williams.

Honorary Pallbearers were Dr. Steve Favors, Fred Hunter, Clarence Holley, Michael Johnson, Lyle Tinner and Harold McMillan.

Mr. McMillan died March 28, 2012. He was born November 24, 1949, in Emory.

He graduated from Rains High School and East Texas State University, now Texas A&M University-Commerce. He retired from Dow Chemical in 2010.

Mr. McMillan united with the Prairie Grove Baptist Church at an early age.

Survivors include his mother, Modis McMillan of Emory; sister, Gwendolyn McMillan Lawe of Dallas; brothers, Harold McMillan of Austin and Alfred McMillan of Emory; daughters, Stacye Hargrove of Houston and La Tonya Barnes of Angleton; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home of Emory.

Marguerite Oresa Taylor
1920 - 2011
Graveside services for Marguerite Taylor, 90, of Boise, Idaho, will be held at Emory Cemetery on Friday, April 6, at 1:00 p.m. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Earol E. Taylor.

Marguerite Taylor, former resident of Rains County, died on December 15, 2011, at Ashley Manor in Boise, Idaho.

The couple married on April 6, 1941 and were residents of Emory for many years. They were members of Emory Church of Christ.

Survivors include a son, Robert Taylor and wife Elon Whitlock of Boise, Idaho; daughter, Kay Haley and husband Larry Haley, of Collinsville; grandsons, Matthew Haley of Portland, Oregon, and Jason Haley and wife Joelle Haley of Austin; sister, Evelyn Jamison, and brother, Orville Feemster, both of Nashville, Arkansas
