Doyle Lay
1932 - 2003
Services for Doyle Lay, 71, of Alba were held Saturday, Oct. 25, at Lake Fork Baptist Church of Alba with Bro. David Smith officiating.

Burial followed at Lake Fork Baptist Memorial Cemetery in Alba under the direction of Wilson-Bartley Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Shawn Minyard, Carl Barcheers, Donald Barcheers, Clyde Taylor Jr., Cody Willis, Blaine Willis, Clay Maddux, Dusty Johnson and Pete Taylor. Honorary pallbearers were Men’s Sunday School Class.

Mr. Lay died October 22 in a Tyler hospital.

He was born Feb. 11, 1932, in McFarland, Calif., to the late William Irwin and Bessie Lunsford Lay. He grew up in Lubbock, lived most of his life in Kaufman County, and moved to Alba four years ago. He was a graduate of Chartered Life Underwriters and worked in estate planning. He was a member of Lake Fork Baptist Church of Alba, had served in the Army Reserves, and had also been a scoutmaster and a member of the Rotary Club, Lions Club and Jaycees, and served on the school board.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Virginia Barcheers Lay of Alba; sons, Terry Lay of Canyon Lake, Monte Lay of North Richland Hills, and Vance Lay, of Canton; foster son, Patrick Yonak of Minnesota; daughter, Connie Rankin of Texarkana; brother, Don Lay of Snyder; sister, Wanda Phifer of Lubbock; and eleven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Royce Lay.

Memorials may be made to Lake Fork Baptist Cemetery Fund, 9483 FM 515, Alba, TX 75410.

Dwight McGuire
1951 - 2003
Dwight Lee McGuire of Quinlan died Tuesday, Oct. 21, at his residence. A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Quinlan Funeral Home Chapel.

Born Dec. 30, 1951, in Dallas, he was the son of Bobby Turner and Shirley Evelyn McGuire. He married Cynthia McGuire on Jan. 8, 1999, in Seagoville. Mr. McGuire worked for D.A.C. Vision of Garland of 17 years.

Surviving are his wife; his mother, Shirley Wyer of Emory; daughters, Angela Spurgeon and husband John of Rice, Mikki McGuire of Garland and Misty Evans of Seagoville; two sons, Erick Wallace and Nathan Wallace, both of Dallas; brothers, George Horton and wife Sherrie of Wylie, Steve Wyer and Larry Wyer of Forney, and Clifford Wyer of Hillsboro; a sister, Etta Horton of Emory; and grandchildren, Mitchell, Chase and Chad Loven.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Beverly Wyer and Rita Kiffer, in 2002.

Lane Shipman
1944 - 2003
Dewey “Lane” Shipman, 59, of Pampa passed away Friday, Oct. 17. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Zion Lutheran Church in Pampa with Rev. Michael Erickson officiating. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

Mr. Shipman was born July 22, 1944, in Durant, Okla. He married Donna Freeman on Oct. 1, 1966, in Clayton, New Mexico. He worked for Pioneer Natural Gas for 27 years and owned and operated the Eagle Radiator Shop since 1994. Mr. Shipman was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was a resident of Pampa for 27 years.

Survivors include his wife Donna; two sons, Eric Shipman and James Shipman, both of Pampa; six brothers, Zearl Shipman of Amarillo, Alvin Shipman and Calvin Shipman, both of Durant, Okla., Don Shipman of Denison, James Shipman of Greenville and Carl Ray Shipman of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Eveline Downs of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and one granddaughter, Ashley Shipman of Pampa.

Mr. Shipman was preceded in death by his parents, James and Kate Shipman; and twin brother, Blaine Shipman.

Lattie Floyd Wilds
1907 - 2003
Lattie Floyd Wilds, 95, of Emory passed away Oct. 23, 2003, in Presbyterian Hospital, Winnsboro, Texas, from complications of aspiration pneumonia. Burial arrangements were made by Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home, Emory, Texas. A private family memorial service was held at the graveside, Emory City Cemetery, Emory, Texas.

Lattie Floyd Wilds was born on Dec. 30, 1907, in Fogel, Oklahoma, to Jesse Frederick and Josephine Sexton Wilds. He married Bessie Mae Hart on July 7, 1933, in Old Boston, Texas.

By trade, Lattie was a carpenter. He was respected for his work and was a talented and honest craftsman.

He was preceded in death by his wife and three children: Nelson Eugene, Carolyn Florence and Laddie Lee Wilds. He is survived by four children: Marjorie Ann Oliver, James Elden Wilds and Mary Josephine Davis, all of Emory, and Carol Elizabeth Ponder of Reilly Springs; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Johnne Etter
1915 - 2003
Services for Johnne Doris Etter, 88, of Greenville were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at Englunds Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Cleve Kerby officiating. Burial was in Englewood Cemetery.

Mrs. Etter died Wednesday, Dec. 24, at Colonial Retirement Lodge in Greenville.

She was born Oct. 13, 1915, at Courtney. A graduate of Sweetwater High School, she attended Texas Tech University and taught school at Nolan and Busby. On May 26, 1939, she and Marcus Jackson Etter were married in Los Angeles, Calif.

Mrs. Etter was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the BRT.

Survivors are her husband; two daughters, Kay and husband Cliff McMullen of Emory and Carolyn and husband Charles Dodson of Ruidoso, N.M.; six grandchildren, Marc Dodson of Albuquerque, N.M., Pepper and Marc DuBois of Scottsdale, Ariz, Rachel McMullen and Michelle McMullen, both of Emory, and Patricia Hammaker and Christine Moore, both of Arlington; and four great-grandchildren, Jenna Moore, Elizabeth and Daniel Hammaker of Arlington, and Katie Elyse DuBois of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Rev. Jed Hampton
1919 - 2003
Funeral services for Rev. Jed Hampton, 84, of Point were held at Emory United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, with Rev. David Diller, Rev. Jack McManns and Dr. Jack Cox officiating.

Burial was in Emory City Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home of Emory. Pallbearers were Tom Miner, Elton Hagler, Gaston Deberry, Rev. Carlton Dyer, Steve Melton and Scottie Wenzel.

Rev. Hampton died December 24 at Hospice of East Texas in Tyler.

He was born in Kaufman County on Sept. 22, 1919, to Walter and Hester Ward Hampton. He married Hazel Marie Webb in Austin on June 7, 1955. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a United Methodist minister. At the time of his death, he was pastoring Ridgeway Union Church. He was a 26-year member of both the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star.

Survivors include his wife of Point; son, Donald Jed Hampton of Yantis; daughters, Barbara Parker of Point, Helen Streety of Tyler and Billy Darlene Hampton of Manor; brother, Paul Hampton of Athens; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and one grandchild.

Donations may be made to the the church of your choice or Hospice of East Texas.

Julia Littlejohn
1911 - 2003
Funeral services for Julia Odessa Littlejohn, 92, of Fruitvale were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Roundflat Pentecostal Church with Bro. Homer Morgan officiating.

Burial was in Creagleville Cemetery under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home of Grand Saline. Pallbearers were grandsons, Johnny Littlejohn, Robert Littlejohn, Randy Littlejohn, Colton Littlejohn, Justin Burkett, Glen Hughes, Josh Kuykendall and Matt Kuykendall.

Mrs. Littlejohn died December 29 in Grand Saline.

She was born April 17, 1911, in Rains County to the late Frank and Barbara Christopher Butler. She lived most of her life in Van Zandt County. She was a charter member of Roundflat Pentecostal Church. Mrs. Littlejohn was a housewife.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, John and LaVonne Littlejohn of Mesquite, Richard and Evelyn Littlejohn, Robert and Deloris Littlejohn, and James and Pansey Littlejohn, all of Fruitvale; daughter, Mary Lambright of Fruitvale; three brothers, Richard Butler of Lorenzo, Leb Butler of Grand Saline and Norman Butler of Grand Prairie; sister, Letha Stone of Edgewood; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Martin Littlejohn; two brothers, Leo and Leon Butler, sister, Dorthy Petrea; and grandson, Travis Littlejohn.

Janina Maberry
Funeral services for Janina Maberry, 63, of Emory were held at Shady Grove Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003, with Rev. Joe Strebeck and Rev. Wayne Wolfe officiating.

Burial was in Dunbar Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Terry Payne, Shillem Bulow, Randy Calhoun, Dickie Easley, Jerry Jones and Paul Molidor.

Mrs. Maberry died December 25, at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.

She was born in Emory to Arlin Woodson and Lucy Clodell Arnold Northcutt. She married Forest Wayne Maberry in Duncanville on Oct. 2, 1973. She was a department manager at Wal-Mart in Sulphur Springs. She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and Ladies Helping Hands.

Survivors include her husband; mother, Lucy Northcutt of Russellville, Ark.; daughters, Kimberly Kay Payne of Alba, Jennifer Ann Hilton of Quinlan and Stephanie Hite of Greenville; two grandchildren, Ashley Kay Payne and Clay Michail Hilton; sister, Gloria Jo Gathright of Little Rock, Ark.; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her father and one granddaughter, Amber Payne, in 2003.

Judy Matheny
1947 - 2003
Funeral services for Judy Matheny, 56, of Alba were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, at Changed Life Church in Sulphur Springs with Rev. Clyde Warner officiating.

Burial was in North Hopkins Cemetery with Mrs. Matheny’s grandchildren serving as pallbearers.

Mrs. Matheny passed away at 7:25 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, in Sulphur Springs.

She was born in Dallas on October 31, 1947, to Bill and Marjorie Whitehead Cage. She married William Lee Matheny in San Angelo on April 16, 1965. He survives. Mrs. Matheny was a homemaker.

Other survivors include daughters, Dottie Matheny, Teresa Lee Palmer and husband Mike, Karen Elaine Dalton and husband Phillip, all of Sulphur Springs, Brandie Golleher of Denton and Paula Hill of San Angelo; sons, Daniel Allen Matheny and wife Denise of Sulphur Springs and Kevin Wade Matheny of Alba; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Cage of San Angelo; and one sister, Dorothy Robertson of San Angelo.

Arrangements were under the direction of Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.

Audrey Mayberry
1955 - 2003
Funeral services for Audrey Mayberry, 48, of Emory were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 3, at Richland Baptist Church in Point with Rev. R.L. Stephney Jr. officiating. Burial was at Benton Hill Cemetery in Point.

Mrs. Mayberry died Thursday, December 25, in Dallas.

She was born October 24, 1955, in Point (Richland) to Charlie and Aretha Mayberry. She was a laborer.

Survivors are brothers Edward Thomas of Sulphur Springs, Sammy Williams of Dallas, Steven Mayberry of Houston, Randy Mayberry of Dallas, and Ronnie Mayberry of Point; sisters Annie Cotton of Dallas, Loretta Payne of Rowlett, Beverly Brown of Dallas, Benita Givens of Dallas and Shelia Chism of Dallas.

Her parents, one sister and three brothers preceded her in death.

Don McVey
1921 - 2004
Funeral services for Don McVey, 82, of Alba were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at Pilgrim Rest No. 2 Baptist Church near Golden with Bro. James Spurgeon officiating.

Burial was in Pilgrim Rest No. 2 Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Bartley Funeral Home of Alba. Pallbearers were Shawn McVey, Darrell Galyean, Brian McVey, Lenard Hensley, Josh Collings and Larry Hughes.

Mr. McVey died Thursday, Jan. 1, at a Quitman hospital.

He was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Cato, Kan. He had lived in Alba since 1973 and attended Pilgrim Rest No. 2 Baptist Church. He was a carpenter. Mr. McVey served his country in the U.S. Navy during World war II and until his honorable discharge in 1959.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mary Hill McVey of Alba; son, Michael D. McVey of Butler, Mo.; daughter, Lorna L. Emanuel of Alba; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd E. and Mary Lucinda Russell McVey; son, Patrick N. McVey; three brothers, five sisters, and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial donations may be made to Pilgrim Rest No. 2 Baptist Church, P.O. Box 99, Golden, TX 75444.

Stella Mae Rhoades
1921 - 2003
Funeral services for Stella Mae Rhoades, 82, of Emory were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Eubank Funeral Home Chapel in Canton with Bro. Lee Harris officiating.

Interment was in Haven of Memories Memorial Park in Canton.

Mrs. Rhoades died Tuesday, Dec. 30, in Quitman.

She was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Dallas to Robert Jefferson and Nora Garraway. She grew up in Cuero, lived in Dallas for a time and moved to Edgewood in 1958 where she lived until moving to Emory where she has lived for the past 30 years. She was a Christian by faith and enjoyed sewing and reading her Bible.

She is survived by a grandson and his wife, Charles and Marilyn Floyd of Emory; granddaughter, Cheryl Peterson of Point; six great-grandchildren, Chance Thompson, Chrystal Floyd, Charliene Floyd, Chandon Peterson, Christion Peterson and Cheyenne Peterson; one great-great-grandchild; and brother, Lee Harris of Dallas.
