Victor Holmelin
Victor Holmelin was diagnosed with Breast Cancer 16 years ago this month. He went through many treatments — chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, many medical tests, “millions” of blood draws, his wife Debbie’s “diets” and vitamins, but he never complained. When someone asked him how he was doing, he ALWAYS replied, “Great! How are you?” In his 16 year battle with breast cancer, he was never in physical pain. On Friday, his body finally forced him into the hospital where on Monday, November 15, he peacefully passed away surrounded by his family and friends.
Victor greeted everyone with “how are you my friend” or “hello, brother!” When he met someone, the person immediately felt he was Victor’s best friend. His “Purpose in Life” was to be a model for others so that they, like Vic, might get the most out of every day.
Victor was born in Rockville Center, New York on December 17, 1952 to Gustaf and Gloria Holmelin, who preceded him in death. He lived in Jacksonville, Florida, Yokohama, Japan and Valley Stream, New York before moving to Crosby, Texas in 1962. He was a graduate of Crosby High School. Victor was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, a 4H Club Manager, but his special hobby was the “Ring Leader” for the Backs to the wall and Channel 13 Cooking Teams. He was employed by Dynegy for 19 years as an Operations Supervisor.
Victor is survived by his one true love, Deborah Ann Cooper Holmelin, whom he has shared his life with for the past 26 years. He made her feel special every day of her life. He told Debbie on a daily basis how much he loved her. Many times when Debbie would tell him how sorry she was for what he was going through, he would tell her that he would prefer it be him and not her or the boys.
Victor was a great father to his sons Victor Ryan and David Scott. He found the special strengths in each of the boys and made sure that those strengths were developed. Ryan loves raising animals. Victor made it possible for the family to travel to shows and workshops to support Ryan. Scott loves sports of all kinds. So the family followed him to baseball, soccer, football and basketball games. Both boys loved hunting with Victor. They would go to the hill country together and watch the falling stars, rope goats, search for Jesse James’ hideout and look for Indian arrowheads.
Victor will be greatly missed by, his sister and brother-in-law Gayle and Darrell Griffin, brother and sister-in-law Gustaf and Marion Holmelin, in-laws John and Jean Cooper, sister-in-law Susan Kovacs. His nieces and nephews Chris and Carolanne Norris, Courtney Norris, Whitney Holmelin, Gustaf Holmelin III, Morgan Holmelin, Danielle Cooper and Keith Kovacs will treasure the time that they had with their uncle. The family would like to give a special thanks to Joe Windham, Dan Kubin, Lou Miller, his Dynegy Family, Backs to the Wall and Channel 13 Cooking Teams, all those friends who stopped by the house to just say hello and “our guardian angel” Rosie Adinin.
A celebration of Victor’s life will be held on Thursday, November 18 at the Crosby United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victor Holmelin Memorial Fund care of Crosby State Bank, American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Services are under the direction of Sterling White Chapel in Highlands.
