Billy Ray Armstrong
Funeral services for Billy Ray Armstrong, formerly of Emory and Sulphur Springs, are set for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 10, at Spence Chapel First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs with burial in Emory City Cemetery.
Mr. Armstrong passed away at West Park Hospital in Cody, Wy., on August 5, 2002.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, August 9, at Murray-Orwoski Funeral Home in Sulphur Springs.
Grace Brimer
1913 - 2002
Services for Grace Brimer, 88, of Emory were held at 10:00 a.m. August 6 at Dunbar Union Church with Rev. Junior House and Rev. Floyd Wallace officiating.
Burial was in Dunbar Cemetery under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home of Emory. Pallbearers were Jasper Northcutt, Kenneth Brimer, Billy Lee Brimer, Jr., Allen Hudson, Dwight Brimer and Buddy Brimer. Honorary pallbearer was Marvin Northcutt.
Mrs. Brimer died August 3 at Green Acres Nursing Home in Emory.
She was born in Emory on Nov. 5, 1913, to Albert Warner and Mittie King Hudson. She married Pearson Willie Brimer in Emory on Dec. 25, 1932. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal Church.
Survivors include a brother, C.A. “Pete” Hudson of Mesquite; nephew, Clen Hudson of Emory; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband in January 1980; brother, Alvin “Dusty” Hudson; and sister, Lola Faye Ealy.
Steve Coats
1925 - 2002
Services for Steve Coats, 77, of Emory were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 5, at Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. G.D. Phillips and Rev. Billy Smith officiating.
Burial was in Emory City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry Potts, Johnny Melton, Mark Pope, Jimmy Roberts, Avon Coats and William Ray Killingsworth. Honorary pallbearers were Tooter Terry, Ronnie Luckett and Wayland Douglas.
Mr. Coats died August 3 at Trinity Mother Frances Health Systems in Tyler.
He was born in Rains County on March 24, 1925, to Bud and Jimmie McLeod Coats. He married Geneva Byram in Greenville on April 23, 1945. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He served in the Pacific and was wounded and received the Purple Heart and three battle stars for his duties. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of Emory; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jimmy Taylor of Emory; grandson and wife, Jim Mack and Sonja Taylor of Emory; three great-grandchildren, Steven Taylor, Andrew Taylor and Kayley Taylor; and brother, Alex Coats of Emory.
He was preceded in death by a brother, George Coats.
Pam Douglas
1951 - 2002
Funeral services for Pam Douglas, 50, of Lone Oak were held at Vansickle Baptist Church on Tuesday, August 6, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Roger Ratliff and Dale Moore officiating. Burial followed in Prairie Valley Cemetery.
Mrs. Douglas died Saturday, August 3, at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born December 20, 1951, in Greenville to Nell and Forest Gooch. She was married to Mike Douglas on March 20, 1971, at Prairie Valley Church.
She was employed as a secretary at the Lone Oak Independent School District and more recently at Texas A&M University at Commerce. She was a member of the Vansickle Baptist Church in Cash.
Survivors include her husband of Lone oak; son, Justin Douglas of Commerce; daughter, Jessica Douglas of Commerce; her parents of Greenville; and brother, John Baker of Corsicana.
Brenda Jean Highnote
1950 - 2002
Services for Brenda Jean Highnote, 51, of Lone Oak will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, at Lone Oak Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Cook officiating.
Burial will be in Hooker Cemetery near Lone Oak under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home of Lone Oak.
Ms. Highnote died August 4 at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville.
She was born Sept. 9, 1950, in Dallas. She had lived in Lone Oak for one year and was a member of Local 967 Union. She was an assembler at L-3 Greenville plant.
Survivors include spouse, Sammy Calabrese of Lone Oak; parents, Gene Marrs of Dallas and Billie Bowden of Pontiac, Mich.; son, David Eugene Highnote of Caddo Mills; sister, Sandra Barker of Pontiac, Mich.; and one grandchild.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening at Bartley Funeral Home.
James Milton “Buddy” Johnson
1908 - 2002
Funeral services for James Milton “Buddy” Johnson of East Tawakoni were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 3, at Lone Oak Methodist Church with Rev. Byron Myrick and Rev. Patricia Fleming officiating.
Burial followed at 2:30 p.m. in Restland Cemetery in Dallas.
Mr. Johnson died Monday, July 29, in Visalia, Calif.
The son of James Henry and Mary Ann Moore Johnson, he was born August 16, 1908, in Triana, Ala.
Mr. Johnson was a carpenter by trade and was a lifetime member of Carpenter and Joiners Union of America. He received a 50-year award from Jewel P. Lightfoot Masonic Lodge of Dallas, and Lone Oak Masonic Lodge of Lone Oak presented him with a Golden Trowel Award.
Mr. Johnson was a longtime member of Lone Oak Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Norma Ruth and Byron Myrick of East Tawakoni; two step-daughters, Linda Welch of Knoxville, Tenn. and Neita Cunningham of Maryville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Byron and Alicia Myrick of Paris and Alesia and David Pearson of Dallas; and three great-grandchildren, Molly and Grace Myrick and Noah Pearson.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Millie White Johnson, and his second wife, Margaret Yates Johnson.
Jason Edward Tucker

Jason Edward Tucker, 27, of Campbell passed away Saturday, July 27, at Greenville Presbyterian Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 1, at First Baptist Church of Campbell.
Jason was born November 13, 1974, in Dallas. He was an emergency dispatcher and a member of the Emory Volunteer Fire Department for five years. Jason was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Keri Tucker and daughter ShiAnn Marie of Campbell; parents, Ronnie Tucker of Campbell and Barbara and Gregory Lemen of Halstead, Kan.

Morris Leon Beasley

Funeral services for Morris Leon Beasley, age 82, of Sulphur Springs, were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 14, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Randy Lowe officiating. Burial followed at Cumby Cemetery, with Mr. Beasley’s nephews serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Beasley passed away at 11:55 p.m., Saturday, April 12, at Sulphur Springs Nursing Home.
He was born in Cumby on August 15, 1920, to Lee and Ibrah Easley Beasley.
Mr. Beasley was a retired electrician, having worked for LTV Corporation. He was of the Christian faith. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II.
Survivors include: one daughter, Debra Mask; two sons, Michael Beasley, and Roy Lee Beasley, all of Garland; four step-children; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two sisters, Katherine Formby of Cumby, and Ozell Ensley of Grand Prairie; three brothers, James T. Beasley of Campbell, Bill Beasley of Sulphur Springs, and Duane Beasley of Flint.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Beasley; and one sister, Imogene Devoll.
Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Marjorie R. Briggs
1933 - 2003
Funeral services for Marjorie R. Briggs, age 70, of Golden will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Wilson-Bartley Funeral Home Chapel in Alba with Mr. G.D. Phillips officiating.
Burial will follow in Old Salem Cemetery in Alba. Pallbearers are Neal Russom, Sherwood Harrell, Gary Johnstone, Sammy Walker, Ferrell Wright, and Lanny Campbell.
Mrs. Briggs died Saturday, April 12, at her residence in Golden.
She was born January 21, 1933, in Alba to the late Joseph E. and Rosie Lee Dunavent Sherwood. She lived most of her life in the Golden area. She was a member of Alba Church of Christ and was an ASCS office clerk for the U.S. government. She and her husband also owned Ray’s Package Store in East Tawakoni for 25 years.
Survivors include one son, Kenny Briggs of East Tawakoni; two daughters and one son-in-law, Deborah English of Alba, Kathryn and Del Fansler of Mineola; one brother, Dale Sherwood of Hallsville; two sisters, June Jenkins of Alba, Lee Nell Harrell of Lindale; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond R. Briggs in January of 1998; three brothers, Waylen Sherwood, Oval Sherwood, and Virgil Sherwood; three sisters, Ruby L. Wright, Novis Johnstone, and twin sister, Sue Russom.
Drexel Lee Butler

Graveside services for Drexel Lee Butler, age 92, of Golden were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 14, at Salem Cemetery with Chad Butler officiating.
Mrs. Butler passed away at 6:25 a.m. Sunday, April 13, at Cozby-Germany Hospital in Grand Saline.
She was born on Dec. 13, 1910, in Tennessee to Henry and Sarah Wright Lawler. She married Charlie Henry Butler in Alba on Feb. 16, 1935; he preceded her in death in 1987. Mrs. Butler was the retired owner of Butler’s Grocery at Lake Holbrook. She was a member of Emory Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Bennie Alexander of Emory and Charlene Yarbray of Golden; two sons, Jackie Butler of Emory and Lee Butler of Golden; 14 grandchildren, Ray Alexander, Ann Jennings, Carolyn Emig, Cathy Adcock, Jackie Butler Jr., Sissy Spangler, Chad Butler, Heath Butler, Tina Roach, Rhonda Johnson, Angie Harrison, Dwayne Butler, Crystal Butler, Belinda Crowell, 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one great-grandson and 13 brothers and sisters.
Arrangements were under the direction of Wilson-Orwosky Funeral Home of Emory.
John Q. Cook
1933 - 2003
John Q. Cook, age 69, passed away on April 5 in Yantis. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 8, at Emory church of Christ. Graveside services were in Elliott, Ark.
Mr. Cook was born on July 22, 1933, in Lockhart, La., and was raised in southern Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1957. He and his family lived in Grand Prairie for 32 years. He went to work for LTV in 1957 and retired in 1991 as a Quality Assurance Manager. Mr. Cook was a lifelong member of the church of Christ and was currently a member of the Emory church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Nell Rose Cook of Yantis; mother, Floy Cook of El Dorado, Ark.; daughters, Micki Hogue and husband David, Kimberly Aldriedge and husband Randy of Arlington; granddaughters, Lindsey Hogue and Holly Aldriedge of Arlington; three nephews, Cameron Cook of Lake Jackson, Alan Cook and Patrick Cook of Marysville, Wash.; and niece, Carol Reed of Marysville, Wash.
His father, James E. Cook, and his brother, Jerry E. Cook, preceded him in death.

Burial was in Pilgrim Rest No. 1 Cemetery near Emory. Pallbearers were Ray Elmore, Josh Willingham, Dwain Elmore, Terry Elmore, Jimmie Trout, Dave Harrison, Donnie Riddle and Mitchell White. Honorary pallbearers were employees at Cozby-Germany Hospital in Grand Saline.
Mrs. Elmore died Friday, April 11, at Cozby-Germany Hospital in Grand Saline.
She was born September 17, 1959, in Sulphur Springs. She was married April 17, 1981, in Grand Saline. She lived most of her life in Fruitvale. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Mineola and was a Sunday school teacher. She was also an employee at Cozby-Germany Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Walter Elmore, Sr. of Fruitvale; her parents, Thomas and Thelma McQueen of Quitman; one son, Joe Walter Elmore of Fruitvale; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kayla Nicole Elmore of Fruitvale and Ashley DeAnn and Martin Kratzmeyer of Mineola; two brothers, Larry McQueen of Hawkins, Michael McQueen of Quitman; two sisters, LaWanda Riddle of Alba, Melanie White of Mineola; grandfather, George Whitus of Alba; grandmother, Ruby McQueen of McGregor; and numerous other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather and grandmother; one niece; two aunts; and two uncles.
