Selma Jean Rhea Snider
Selma Jean Rhea Snider, 76, of Baytown died Wednesday, November 17, 2004, under hospice care in Houston following a short battle with ovarian cancer. Selma was born March 26, 1928, in Haynesville, La. The first of two children of Joseph Wood Rhea and Maudie Mildred Rhea, Selma grew up in Buckner, Ark.
She met J.W. Snider when both were in elementary school, vowing that one day she would marry the boy. She did so on May 12, 1950. At the time of her death, they had been married 54 years.
After their marriage, the Sniders traveled the country for many years as part of Mr. Snider's job with Exxon, calling California, New Jersey, Mississippi and Florida home at different times.
Following a debilitating accident in 1974, J.W. was no longer able to work, and Selma spent the remainder of her life caring for her disabled husband. She found time to work as a classified sales representative at the Baytown Sun, where her cheerful smile greeted many an advertiser.
Her children recall her as a loving and sheltering mother who believed in kindness and equal rights for all. She was known among family and friends for her pecan pies and her world-class Thanksgiving dressing. Contrary to the norm, her sons-in-law were among her greatest admirers.
After J.W. and her children, her greatest love was a white sand beach on a green sea, with gentle waves driven by a sea breeze.
Mrs. Snider is survived by her husband; three children, Jimmy Dale Snider and his partner Sandra Goldfield of Chicago; Galynn Jane Borges and husband Walt of Austin; and Charlotte Rhea Schneider and husband Chip of Houston. Other survivors are three grandchildren, Cailey Fudge of Houston, and Isabel and Sophie Borges of Austin, who adored the grandmother they called Mimi..
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Brooks Rhea.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2004, at Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., in Houston.
