Mr. Steen
David Wade Steen, 40, died Sunday, August 26, 2007 at a local hospital. He was born to Thomas Rodney Sr. and Joyce Ann (Hines) Steen on October 5, 1966 in Kingsville. He was a truck driver and a laborer for Floyd Clifton.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Sam and Marie Sheen.
Survivors include his parents Thomas Rodney Steen, Sr. and Joyce Ann Steen of Kingsville; two brothers, Thomas Rodney Steen, Jr. of Dallas, Carlton Lee (Stephanie) Steen of Bishop, a sister, Rebecca Sun Nowlin of Kingsville; his grandparents, Tom and Pearline Hines of George West; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Wednesday, August 29, 2007 from 6 p.m. -8 p.m. with a prayer service to start shortly after 6 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home in Three Rivers. Funeral service will be Thursday, August 30 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in George West with Brother Pat Traxler officiating service. Internment will follow at George West Cemetery in George West.
Pallbearers will be Les Harris, Jeff Melde, Tim Lemon, Mike Strickland, “Hot Rod” Rodney Redding and Tommy Strickland. Honorary pallbearers include C.J. Steen, Billy Steen, Thomas Steen and Mickey Pena.

Mr. Bright
Joe D. Bright, 79, of Beeville, died on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at his residence.
He was born on Nov. 8, 1997, in Oak Grove, to Minnie Douglas Bright and Milton Fred Bright Sr. Joe was a veteran of World War II and a member of First United Methodist Church. He married Jacquiline Cartwright on Aug. 19, 1950. He owned a Real Estate and insurance company for many years in Three Rivers before selling his Insurance Company in 1995 and his Real Estate Company in 1997, and retired. He married Arnette Jackson on Nov. 8, 1997, and moved to Beeville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Jacquelyn Cartwright Bright on April 14, 1993; and one brother, Milton Fred Bright Jr.
Survivors include his wife Arnette Jackson of Beeville; one daughter, Danice Bright of Austin; two sons, Ben (Connie) Bright of Smithville and Jack Bright of San Antonio; four grandchildren, Cassandra Horton and Dustin Tyler Bright, both of Austin, Barrett Evan Bright of Smithville and Cassie Lynn Bright of San Antonio; and one sister, Betty Ripley if Pittsburg.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Three Rivers. Funeral services will be held there at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bill Duke officiating. Interment will follow in the Three Rivers Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Sonny Holdridge, Harry J. Schultz Jr., Larry Custer, Gordon Benham, Harold Reynolds, and Bill Tullis.
Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church in Three Rivers.

Mr. Lopez
Romulo Lopez, 86, died at a Victoria hospital Thursday, August 16, 2007. He was a rancher.
He was born to Juan and Maria (Perez) Lopez on August 18, 1920 in Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Maria Emma Lopez.
His survivors include six sons, Juan Lopez of George West, Arjelio (Francisca) Lopez of Pharr, Aurelio (Victoria) Lopez of George West, Homero (Adelina) Lopez of McAllen, Amadeo (Dora) Lopez of McAllen, Alejandro (Hilaria) Lopez of George West; four daughters, Aurora (Juan) Sanchez of Tennessee, Oralia (Simon) Fuentes of George West, Teresa (Juan) Mendoza of George West, Elma (Matilde) Moreno of Beeville; three brothers, four sisters, 38 grandchildren, 88 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Visitation was held Sunday, August 19 from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home in Three Rivers. Rosary was recited on Sunday at 7 p.m. at the St. George Catholic Church in George West. Funeral service was Monday, August 20 at 10 a.m. at the St. George Catholic Church in George West. Burial followed at George West Cemetery.

Mr. Miller
John Anthony “Ox” Miller, 92, of George West, died on Monday, August 13, 2007.
He was born on May 4, 1915, in Milam County, Texas to Dr. G.S. Miller and Lela Memfee Miller. He moved to Live Oak County in 1918 with his parents. He went to Westmoreland (now Trinity) College in San Antonio and A&I College in Kingsville.
John played professional baseball from 1937 to 1954 as a pitcher. The name “Ox” was earned when he pitched a double-header one Sunday afternoon and won both games. He played for the Washington Senators, the St. Louis Browns, and the Chicago Cubs. After that he taught school in Mathis and in Three Rivers, where he coached baseball. Later he played for and managed semi-pro teams in Victoria, Sinton, and Laredo. He worked with the South Texas All-Stars of San Antonio. They held try-out baseball camps and helped many boys get scholarships for college. He also worked with the Babe Ruth baseball teams in local towns and his teams won state and district championships most years and went to the World Series six times.
John was a rural mail carrier for 34 years in George West until his retirement in 1980. He continued to stay busiy with baseball and his former ball players, many of whom had gone to college on baseball scholarships. Some played professional baseball. As he grew older, he enjoyed attending local girls’ and boys’ sporting events.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Opal Holleman Miller, who has always been his biggest supporter. Since they had no children, John and Opal embraced the young people on his ball teams as their own.
John was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Galloway Funeral Home in George West. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, August 17, at George West Cemetery.

Mr. Turner
Roscoe J. Turner Jr., 73, of Corpus Christi died on Monday, August 13, 2007. He was a farmer and for 30 years worked in the dairy industry.
He was born to Roscoe Sr. and Attie (Elliott) Turner in Pawnee on October 27, 1933. He married Jean Borchers Billings in Beeville on November 28, 1953. He was a member of the Methodist church.
His survivors include his wife Mrs. Jean Turner of Corpus Christi; two daughters, Debra Jean Turner Shumate of Corpus Christi, Sharon (David) Ann Turner Billings of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a son Scott (Karla) Edward Turner of Katy; two sisters, Azalea Bailey of Houston, Erma Spurlin of Roswell, New Mexico; and three granddaughters, Amy Lynn Shumate, Sarah Kathryn Turner and Shannon Elaine Turner.
Visitation was held on Thursday, August 16 from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home in Beeville. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home of Beeville with Reverand Carol Billings officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations were asked to be made to the American Heart Association.

Mrs. Cabrera
Maria Silvia “Chiva” (Valadez) Cabrera, age 49, of George West passed away on Friday, Sept. 21, 2007. She was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic church.
She was born to Pablo and Elisa (Martinez) Valadez on May 6, 1958 in Three Rivers.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
She is survived by her husband Ricardo Cabrera of Clute; two sons, Richard (Rosa) Cabrera of Clute, Marcus (Veronica) Cabrera of Lake Jackson; a daughter, Sunny Marie Cabrera of Clute; her father, Pablo Valadez Sr. of West Columbia; her mother, Elisa M. Valadez of George West; two sisters, Mary Gonzales and Rosa Guajardo both of George West; a brother, Pablo (Enedina) Valadez, Jr. of George West; and her grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Sat., Sept. 22 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Galloway & Sons Chapel in George West. Rosary was cited on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. at St. George Catholic Church. Funeral mass was held on Mon., Sept. 24 at 10 a.m. at St. George Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Olikkara officiating. Interment followed at George West Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gilbert Tamez, Joseph Valadez, Rudy Gonzales, Daniel Guajardo, Jesus Guajardo Ruby Cabrera.

Mrs. Crawford
Ila Lee Roberson Crawford, age 97, died in a Three Rivers nursing home on Wed., Sept. 19, 2007. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She was born to Alexander Lee and Nannie Elizabeth (Camack) Roberson in Mineral on Sept. 15, 1910. She married George Ervin Crawford, Sr. on Jan. 20, 1934.
She is preceded in death by her husband, George Ervin Crawford, Sr. and her parents, Alec and Nannie Roberson.
Her survivors include four sons, George Ervin Crawford, Jr. of Three Rivers; David Lee (Vera) Crawford of George West; Patrick Dale (Chris) Crawford of Bixby, Oklahoma; Joe Allen (Linda) Crawford of Three Rivers; eight grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Friday, Sept. 21 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Galloway & Sons Funeral Chapel in Three Rivers. Funeral services were held on Sat., Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Three Rivers with Rev. Randy Samuels officiating. Interment followed at Mineral Cemetery.
Pall bearers were Eric Crawford, Matthew Crawford, Joe Allen Crawford, Jr., Sam Marcello, Scott Gisler, Howard M. Crawford, Phillip Crawford.
Honorary pallbearers are Rod Crawford, Howard V. Crawford, Charles Woodward, Calvin Bast and Sgt. Martin Crawford, her grandson serving in Iraq.
