MITZI H. PHILLIPS

Mitzi H. Phillips, 71, of Baytown, Texas, died Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at Triumph Hospital in Channelview.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003, at the Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Bridge City. Reverend Keith Royal, pastor of Winfree Baptist Church in Orange, will officiate. Burial will follow at Autumn Oaks Memorial Park in Orange.Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2003, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Phillips was born in Louisville, Mississippi, on October 31, 1931, to L. C. and Mabel Hight. She was a former resident of the Orange area where she had lived since 1972, before moving to Baytown. She married Roy M. Phillips in Las Vegas, Nevada on December 3, 1972. She was a homemaker, a member of Winfree Baptist Church in Orange, a church hostess, and also a member of the Senior Choir.

She was preceded in death by her son Charles Jones, III.

She is survived by her husband, Roy M. Phillips, daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Randy Stoffregen, daughter Tonya Graves, all of Baytown; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Jan Jones of Highlands; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

FRED O. SIMS JR

Fred O. Sims, Jr., 73, of Hot Springs, died Monday, July 14, 2003 at a local hospital. He was born December 2, 1929 in Edwardsville, IL to Fred O. & Elizabeth Adele (Noble) Sims. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hot Springs and Burwell Sunday School Class. He was also a member of Scimitar Shrine in Little Rock, past Potentate of Acacia Shrine in Baton Rouge, LA, Scottish Rite KCCA Valley of Little Rock, past master & life member of Goose Creek Masonic Lodge of Baytown, TX, past master of Lavonia Masonic Lodge in Ventress, LA, past master & life member of Hot Springs Lodge #62 in Hot Springs, past president of Hot Springs Shrine Club, President of Garland County Scottish Rite Club, Royal Order of Jesters Court 12 AR, Chairman of Advisory Board of Hot Springs Demolay Chapter #255, past patron of Hot Springs National Park Chapter 635 O.E.S. 3 times, Duell member of Spa Chapter #585 O.E.S., Royal Patron of Garland County #21 Order of Amaranth, York Rite Royal Arch, past High Priest of Royal Arch Masons, past Master of THRICE, past Commander of Knights Templar, member of Order Sword & Trial, member of KYCH, member of Arkansas College of York Rite Masons, Royal Order of Scotland and Honorary Legion of Honor for Demolay.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years-Betty Sims of Hot Springs; son-Fred Oliver Sims, III of Baytown, TX; daughter- Cheryl Lynn & John Danna; son-Michael David & Katherine Sims all of Hot Springs; brother-William R. & Lorna Sims; sisters-Violet Robinson and Clara & Jack Fields all of Texas; 3 grandchildren-Kala Elizabeth Hester, Samantha Marie Danna and Lauren Nicole Sims.

Visitation was 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home.

Services are today at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John McCallum officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers include Hot Springs Demolay Chapter #255 and Masonic Rites by Hot Springs Lodge #62. Honorary pallbearers include CCU staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dr. Joe Howe, Dr. Greg St. John, Dr. J.W. Smith, National Park Dialysis Staff and Burwell Sunday School Class.

CLEOPHUS BARNETT

Cleophus Barnett, 79, of Baytown, passed away on July 12, 2003 in his Baytown home. He was born on August 10, 1923. Cleophus lived in Baytown for fifty-two years. He was a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. He was a retired machine operator from Champion Papers. He served two terms in the United States Army. Cleophus was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Barnett. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Garland and Mary Barnett, Lee Autry Barnett and friend, Jackie Flowers, David and Janice Barnett and Malvis Barnett, all of Baytown, daughters and sons-in-law, Tondelayo Barnett-White and Howard White, Cleophus Marie Seeraj, Jeanette McFarland and Karl McFarland, all of Baytown, brother, Nathaniel, of Houston, and sisters, Creola and Yvonne of Houston, 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Visitation will be today, July 16, 2003 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. Funeral service will be Thursday, July 17, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Mont Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Baytown, TX with Rev. A.N. Franklin officiating. Burial will follow at Veterans Cemetery in Houston. Pallbearers will be James Simpson, Jr., Clyde Miles, Charles Raymond, Gary Barnett, Michael Smith and Lloyd Williams. Honorary Pallbearers are David Barnett, Garland Barnett, Lee A. Barnett, Malvis Barnett. Fred Outland, Jr. and Karl McFarland.

LOUIS DURYEE WEISS JR

Louis Duryee Weiss Jr., 87, a resident of Baytown, formerly of Conneaut, Ohio, passed away on July 14, 2003 in a Channelview Hospital. Louis was born on June 12, 1916 in Lima, Ohio. He was a retired operator with P & C Dock Company. He served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the Optimist Club and VFW.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

He is survived by his wife, Gerry Weiss of Conneaut, Ohio, son, James Weiss of Cleveland, Ohio, daughter, Gloria Breidenbach of Baytown, brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Wilma Weiss of Cleveland, Ohio, five grandchildren, Suzi Tallent, Chris and Bill Pappas, Nathan and Jason Weiss, four great-grandchildren, Amanda and Angela Tallent and Hailey and Hannah Pappas.

GREGG BICKERSTAFF

Gregg Bickerstaff, 64, passed away July 10, 2003 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. He was a resident of Baytown for fifty years and graduated from Robert E. Lee Class of 1957. He was a past Deputy Constable for Precinct 3 and had worked for Millennium Chemical for over twenty-five years. He was a member of the Catholic Faith and a member and past Master of Cedar Bayou Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, loved his kids and adored his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Carroll and Mary Katherine Bickerstaff. He is survived by his wife of forty years, Norma Bickerstaff of Baytown, two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jimmy Bickerstaff of Corpus Christi and Beauford and Whitney Bickerstaff of Baytown, sister, Mary Nell Maples of Tucson, AZ., two grandchildren, Maison Bickerstaff of Baytown and Cristen Bickerstaff of Dayton, also, survived by his buddy, Sharmin.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 19, 2003 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003 at Earthman Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Roy Cloudt officiating.

The family has requested memorials be sent to the American Diabetes Association, Southeastern Regional Office, 2400 Augusta Dr., Suite 420, Houston, TX 77057.

JOHN HENRY WILLIAMS JR

John Henry Williams, Jr., of Kemah, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2003 in an area hospital. Born October 3, 1922 in Marianna, Arkansas, he grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana. He served his country proudly during WWII and achieved the rank of Staff Sgt. while in the U.S. Army. He worked as an estimator in the construction field.

Preceded in death by his son John Henry Williams, III, he is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Gladys C. Williams, and grandchildren, John Henry Williams IV, Lisa Michelle Williams, Suzie Rae Craft, Helen Williams, and Sheri Leigh Williams. He enjoyed painting outdoor scenes, cared deeply about his family, and was a kind man and loving husband.

Services will be held today, Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Chapel of Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive in Houston, with Chaplain John W. Morris of Odyssey Hospice officiating.

PHILIP JOSEPH CREAGH

Philip Joseph Creagh, age 72, of Crosby, Texas, passed away on July 14, 2003 after a brief but courageous battle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-one years, Phyllis, daughter, Patricia and husband, Dan Kasprzak. grandchildren, Lauren, Katherine and Daniel Kasprzak of Crosby, Texas, daughter, Deborah and husband, Gregory Duncan, grandchildren, Matthew, Timothy and Emily Duncan of Acworth, Georgia, and brother, Cornelius Creagh of Bergenfield, New Jersey. Philip was born in Bronx, New York on February 14, 1931, proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1952- 1955, enjoyed a long career as an international banker for over forty years with Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. in New York and Houston. Up until his death, Phil unselfishly gave of his time in many local organizations in the Crosby and Huffman area. He tutored English as a second language as a volunteer for Literacy Advance Houston and was recently awarded the Silver Award for 600-900 hours of service. He was a member and former officer of the Indian Shores Golf Association, was a past Chamber of Commerce, Crosby Community Center, May Community Center in Huffman, TX and the Humble Senior Activity Center Garden and Greenhouse. He served as President of the Nanuet, New York Lions Club from 1975-76. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish Community of Crosby. In addition to his numerous volunteer activities, Phil and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and around the world with Elder Hostel and other tour groups. In his free time, he enjoyed a round of golf with his friends at the Indian Shores Golf Course, dancing with his lovely wife, Phyllis, and spending time with his family. He will be most remembered for his beautiful smile, twinkling blue eyes and generosity. The family will receive friends today, Wednesday, July 16, 2003 from 5 to 9 p.m. with a wake service at 7 p.m. at Sterling White Chapel Funeral Home at 11011 Crosby-Lynchburg Rd., Highlands, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2003 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crosby, Texas. The family is grateful for the many prayers and words of support during this difficult time.

CHANCE PATRICK CHOATE

Chance Patrick Choate, 3, of Highlands, went to be with our Lord and Savior Saturday, July 12, 2003. He was born October 10, 1999 in Highlands, Texas to Stephania Choate. Chance was a member of The Lakewood Church and enjoyed going to the children’s services on Sundays. Chance was a fun loving child who has a free spirit, and had a love for many things such as riding on Pa’s tractor, watching bull riding, being in the outdoors, going to grandma Mac’s for a visit, he loved Nana’s new van, watching “Wiggles”, “King of the Hill” with his Pa, “Toy Story”, and his favorite movie “Free Willy”, going to Sea World and seeing Shamu the whale.

Chance is preceded in death by his grandfather, Patrick McAlister, and great-grandfather; Bill McAlister.

Chance is survived by his loving mother; Stephania Choate of Highlands, sister, Emilee Traylor of Highlands, nana; Pam McAlister of Highlands, uncle, Wayne McAlister and wife Christina of Highlands, great-grandma; Lois McAlister of Highlands, great-grandparents; R.C. and Mary Calhoun of Sulphur Springs, TX.

Visitation will be today, July 15, 2003 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Sterling White Chapel. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Sterling White Chapel in Highlands. Burial will follow at White Cemetery in Highlands.

DAVID M. (DAVE) PARKER

David M. (Dave) Parker, 50, a native of Utica, NY, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2003, following an automobile accident. He graduated from Ithaca University in Ithaca, NY and received his Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. He joined Computer Science Corporation in Dallas as an accountant and moved to the Houston office five years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Neiman, of Houston; sons, Rob Vinson and his wife Melissa, and Jeff Drake and his wife Daphne; daughters, Sandra Weber and husband Ryan, and Angela Roberts and husband Barry, all of El Dorado, KS. Five brothers, three sisters, and 13 grandchildren also survive.

Visitation was held Saturday at L.A. Crespo Funeral Directors. Services and burial will be held Tuesday, July, 15, 2003, in El Dorado, KS. Local arrangements by L.A. Crespo Funeral Directors, 6123 Garth Rd., Baytown, 281.839.0700,

W.G. "GUS" METTKE

Services for W.G. “Gus” Mettke, 93, formally of Baytown, will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Baytown with Reverend Bonnie Parker and Reverend Douglas Guither officiating.

Mr. Mettke died July 11, 2003.

He was born January 17, 1910 in Bellville, Texas. On September 9, 1934 he was married to Hildegarde Becker. He was preceded in death by his wife.

He was a graduate of Bellville High School, attended Blinn College and Texas A & M University and graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1938. He taught school in the Bellville, Weimar and Galena Park areas.

In 1943 he was employed by Humble Oil and Refining Company, now known as Exxon and transferred from a process technician to accounting. He served on the board of directors of the Humble Club and as chairman of the membership committee. He was a member of the Baytown Exxon Annuitants Club and the Retirees of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and served on the council as chairman, treasurer and financial secretary and also served as chairman and treasurer of the Brotherhood. He was a beloved member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church; he spent many hours folding the bulletins for Sunday services. He remained active and generous to the end.

For those desiring, memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 712 Schilling St., Baytown, TX. 77520.

Mr. Mettke is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William Paul and Amelia Mettke of Austin, Texas and Winston and Emma Lou Mettke of Orange California; a granddaughter, Kristen Anne (Mettke) and her husband David Griffin and a grandson, Jonathan Erik Mettke, both of Austin; sister, Birdie Abel of Bellville, Texas.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2003 at Earthman Funeral Home, 3919 Garth Rd., Baytown, TX.

Interment will be at Oak Knoll Cemetery in Bellville, Texas. Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.
