Arnold
Cristina Arnold, 22, of Tempe, Ariz., died Monday, March 15, 2004. She was born in Corpus Christi and graduated from George West High School.
Survivors include her husband, Justin Garza; a daughter, Sophie Blaine Garza; her parents, Marvin Arnold and Janette Mercer; a sister, Kristen Rackley; six brothers, John and Lonnie Arnold and Paul, Kenny, Jason and Shaun Rackley; and grandmothers, Janette Mercer and Eva Pullin.
A memorial service was held Friday at 3 p.m. at Messinger Indian School Mortuary in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Meeks
Ambers Dale Meeks, 81, of Whitsett, died Thursday, March 18, 2004. He was born Aug. 24, 1922, to Ambers and Gertrude Meeks in Center.
Mr. Meeks was a retired industrial insulation contractor, lifelong rancher and a member of the Whitsett Baptist Church. His insulation business took him to many countries and over half of the states in the United States. He was a Navy veteran, ex-member of the Cowboy Turtle Association and Rodeo Cowboy Association.
Mr. Meeks was preceded in death by his wife, Lynette (Wright) Meeks; and a daughter, Nancy.
Survivors include two sons, Charles (Mary Ann) Meeks and Jack Meeks, all of Whitsett; two grandsons, Justin Meeks of Austin and Preston Meeks of San Marcos; three granddaughters, Stacy Meeks of Austin and Abby and Tyra Meeks, both of San Antonio; a sister, Alice Austin of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Whitsett Baptist Church. The funeral was held Saturday at the Whitsett Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Burial followed in the Three Rivers Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Joe Wright, Phil Wright, Ken Gusnowski, Steve Schmidt, Ronnie Retzloff, Luke Goebel and Jimmy Pilgrim.

Garcia
Manuel Cortez Garcia, 68, of South Bend, Ind., died Sunday, May 23, 2004. Mr. Garcia was born May 13, 1936, in Oakville to Donicio and Juanita (Cortez) Garcia.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita L. Garcia of South Bend; two sons, Manuel L. Garcia of Whittier, Calif. and Adam Garcia of San Antonio; a daughter, Angelica Garcia of South Bend; a brother, Juan C. Garcia of George West; three sisters, Maria Garcia of Beeville, Micaela Ybañez of George West and Carmen Moreno of Corpus Christi; and two grandchildren, Antonio and Cristian Hernandez.
The visitation and funeral ceremony were held Thursday at Cobb Funeral Home in South Bend, Ind. Arrangements were under the direction of Cobb Funeral Home.
A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at St. George Catholic Church in George West.
Branstetter
Delbert Leon Branstetter, 88, of Corpus Christi died Friday, July 23, 2004.
Visitation was held Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Galloway and Sons Chapel in Three Rivers. The funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. with Byron Gage officiating. Burial followed at the White Creek Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jesse Branstetter, Clint Branstetter, Ken Branstetter, Cory Branstetter, James Branstetter, W.G. Hughes and John Hughes.
Mr. Branstetter was born in Garvin County, Oklahoma on March 9, 1916, to Jesse Boon and Annie (Gregory) Branstetter. He married Joalene Harris on Dec. 30, 1937, in George West. He moved to Corpus Christi in 1957 for the reminder of his life. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic. In 1963, he became an elder of the Church of Christ until his death.
Mr. Branstetter was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Annie (Gregory) Branstetter; two brothers, Monroe and Cecil; and one infant son.
Survivors include his wife, Joalene (Harris) Branstetter of Corpus Christi; three sons, Lendal (D) Branstetter of Corpus Christi, Dale (Ann) Branstetter of Richardson and Robert (Laura) Branstetter of San Antonio; one daughter, Laverne (Bill) Hughes of Bishop; two sisters, Viola Phillips of Port Townsend, Wash. and Jessie Mae Guy of Dallas; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five nephews and four nieces.

Doris VanCleave Sowell Brown, 64, of Three Rivers died Tuesday, July 27, 2004.
Visitation was held Wednesday, July 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Galloway and Sons Chapel in Three Rivers. The funeral was held on Thursday at 2 p.m. Burial followed at the Three Rivers Cemetery.
Mrs. Brown was born on May 20, 1940, to Douglas Faye and Frankie Mae (Stewart) VanCleave in Three Rivers. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her parents, Douglas Faye and Frankie Mae (Stewart) VanCleave; two brothers, Charles VanCleave and Dennis VanCleave; and one daughter, Brenda Sowell.
Survivors include two sons, Doug (Tina) Sowell of Katy and Rick Sowell of Bandera; two daughters, Laurie Sowell of Giddings and Michelle (Travis) Sowell Preston of Groesbeck; one sister, Lois (Joe) Vinning of Oak Grove, La.; one brother WR “Jack” (Beverly) VanCleave of Flour Bluff; seven grandchildren, Koery Green, Colton and Cameron Holloway of Giddings, Forrest Sowell of East Bernard, Codi Sowell of Groesbeck and Aaron and Tristin Sowell of Katy; and one great-grandchild, Kade Green of Giddings.
Chapa
Lena (Chapa) Garcia, 92, died Thursday, July 29, 2004.
Mrs. Garcia was born in Anna Rose on June 1, 1912, to Romano and Regina “Pinky” (Weston) Chapa. She was a lifelong resident of George West. She and her husband, Ramiro Garcia Sr., owned and operated the T&T Café in George West for many years. Mrs. Garcia was an active member of the George West American GI Forum Ladies Auxiliary during the 1950s. Her efforts toward various projects greatly benefited the community. As a descendant of the Weston and Chapa families, alongside her family, she contributed to the success of the Chapa Dance Hall (La Posta), one of the first and most popular dance halls in South Texas.
Mrs. Garcia was foremost a loving, nurturing mother who found great joy in her family. Kind, generous and unselfish, she had a love for all things good and beautiful. She always had a true appreciation for joyful living, which was reflected by her vibrant love for music and dancing. The wonderful memories she leaves her family will forever bring happiness and smiles.
Survivors include two daughters, Narcie (Gene) Secrist of Cedar City, Utah, and Mackey (Chon) Alvarez of George West; a son, Ramiro Jr. (Mary) Garcia of Kirby; three stepchildren, Raul (Ine) Garcia, Griselda Valverde and Edebelia Garza, all of Three Rivers; two sisters, Emilia (Chapa) Franco of Corpus Christi and Otila (Chapa) Martinez of Defiance, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Francisco, Gilberto, Guillermo and Ernesto Chapa; two sisters, Leonor Chapa and Olivia Mandel; and three stepchildren.
A rosary was held Sunday, Aug. 1, at the Galloway & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in George West.
Church services were held Monday, Aug. 2, at St. George Catholic Church in George West with interment following at the George West Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Chon Alvarez, Randy Garcia, Ruben Alvear, Shawn Ray Alvarez, Jason Alvarez, Josh Likens, Lloyd Wientjes and Bobby Cuevas.

Baylor
Jack R. Baylor, 91, of Beeville, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004.
Mr. Baylor was born Nov. 4, 1912, to Francis Webster and Nancy (Roberts) Baylor in Beeville. Mr. Baylor served as a member of the 36th infantry division in the Rifleman Association of the Army. He was in the Texas National Guard. For his service in the Battle of Normandy, he received a Fame Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, American Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Baylor was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lillian (Fojtik) Baylor; one son, Dr. Bob Baylor of Bacliff; one daughter, Frances (Wayne) Baylor Shepherd of Beeville; four grandchildren, Brandon (Clarissa) Williford of Three Rivers, Amber Williford of Beeville, E.R. Baylor and E.R. Baylor III “Trey,” both of Houston; two step-grandchildren, Amanda Shepherd of Beeville and Morgan (John) Staudt of Pearsall; two great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandson, a brother in-law, R.A. (Dovie) Fojtik of Beeville; several nieces and nephews; and friends.
Visitation was held on Monday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Galloway and Sons Funeral Home in Beeville. The rosary was held Monday at 7 p.m.
The funeral was held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Patrick Donohoe officiating. Burial followed in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Gonzales
Flavio “Lalo” Gonzales, 80, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004 in Three Rivers.
Mr. Gonzales was born on Jan. 2 , 1924, in Nell to Carmen and Virginia (Carreon) Gonzales. He was retired from the Co-op and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mr. Gonzales was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include one brother, Ricardo Gonzales; one sister, Maclovia Gonzales, both of Karnes City; three sons, George (Diana) Gonzales of Laredo, Xavier Gonzales of Three Rivers and Joseph Gonzales of New Orleans, La.; one daughter, Sara (Kelly) Doege of Mission; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held Monday, Sept. 27, from 2 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home in Three Rivers. Rosary was held Monday at 7 p.m. The funeral was Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Piotr Gajda officiating. Burial followed in the Nell Cemetery.
