In 1934 Mr. Tom Tyson, his supervisor in the CCC, loaned him enough money to lease a filling station at the corner of Highway 75 and the Old Montgomery Road in Huntsville, and the income from that enterprise allowed him to enroll for the first time at Sam Houston State Teachers College. Later he supported his studies by delivering Tastee Bread in Huntsville and surrounding communities.

At the end of World War II he was asked by Dr. J.L. Clark to return to Sam Houston where he began his college teaching career in the History Department. After additional graduate work at the University of North Carolina he began teaching Sociology, and continued in that department until he retired in 1979. During his teaching years he and his wife made numerous trips to Mexico, accompanying groups of students on the Sam Houston Summer Field School. He was a member of the Sociology Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Delta, and of the Huntsville Kiwanis club.
During the Civil Rights struggles of the 1950's and 60's he worked tirelessly for the cause of social, political and economic justice and equality for all Americans, and received awards and commendations from the Texas Commission on the Race Relations and the NAACP.
He was a skilled and enthusiastic fisherman, as well as a knowledgeable outdoorsman and woodsman. After retirement he and his wife, Mozelle, traveled extensively throughout the United States camping and observing birds and wildlife.
