James Roundtree Sr.
James Curtis Roundtree Sr., age 74, passed away on Aug. 12, 2007, at a Fort Worth area hospital.
Born Oct. 26, 1932, to James and Eliza (Smither) Roundtree in Huntsville, Texas, he served his country in the United States Army before retiring from Quarles Lumber Company in Fort Worth, Texas.
He was an excellent father who loved his children and family.
Survivors include sons, James Curtis Roundtree, Jr. (Nena), Ricky McCoy, and "Peddie" Charles McCoy, all of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, Shirley Puig of the Fort Worth Metro area; brother, James Roundtree of Fort Worth, Texas; sisters, Joyce E. Roundtree and Bessie Mae Willis, both of Huntsville; caretaker and Niece, Sharon Roundtree and a host of grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.
A Homegoing Service will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at 9:30 a.m. at West Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 5325 Bonnell Avenue, Fort Worth, Texas 76107.
Interment will follow at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
Vivian Lou Cowart
Vivian Lou Cowart was born Feb. 2, 1926, and passed away Aug. 15, 2007.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at 10 a.m. in the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow at Mt. Capers Cemetery.
Durnal Cross Jr.
Mr. Durnal Cros, Jr., 86, born Sept. 1, 1920, passed away Aug. 16, 2007.

Marion Eugene “Gene” Owen
Marion Eugene Owen, retired lieutenant from TDCJ, passed away Aug. 19, 2007, at his home in Richards.
He was born Aug. 1, 1949, in Crockett, Texas, to John Travis and Lena Pearl Johnson Owen. Gene loved living in the country!
He especially liked working with his John Deere tractor, gardening and piddling around outdoors.
He also enjoyed going to garage sales and junking with Janice.
Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at 10 a.m. in the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Floyd Hoke and the Rev. Bob Lynch officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Shane Reed, Sammy Reed, Trey Sissom, Billy Hoch, John Domingue and Curk McFall.
Honorary pallbearers are John Kenneth Owen, James Gary Owen, John Stanfield, Paul Burns, Patrice Domingue, Jane Pool and Joanie Willis.
Interment will follow at Pool’s Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and brother David L. Owen. He is survived by his wife Janice Stanfield Owen; children, Clint Hinds and wife Brie of Richards, Jennifer Thompson and husband Allen of Cleveland, Tenn., Melissa Lewis and husband Warren of Huntsville, John Owen of Chattanooga, Tenn. and Emily Byrd of Richards; grandchildren, Kirsten Hinds, Zanna Thompson, Chance Lewis, Logan Hinds, Gage Lewis, Wyatt Lewis, Olivia Thompson and Landon Hinds; brother, John K. Owen and wife Frances of Tomball, brother James Gary Owen and wife Niakki of Jacksonville, Ark. and sister-in-law, Louise Owen of Washington State. The are also many nieces and nephews, special cousins Carol Ann Hoch, Bobbie Sissom, and Sherry Kaye Reed of Crockett, Texas along with numerous other loving cousins, neighbors and family friends.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Odyssey Health Care of Bryan College Station or Pool’s Cemetery.
Laney Sandel Jr.
Funeral services for Laney Sandel, Jr., age 77, will be at 1p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at St Peters United Methodist Church, 20775 Kingsland, Katy, TX 77450. He passed away on Friday, Aug. 17, 2007. He was born Oct. 28, 1929, in Trinity, Texas to parents, Hazel Christine and Laney Sandel, Sr. Mr. Sandel was a Life Scout in Boy Scouts, a teacher, coach and Asst. Principal.
He is survived by his daughter, Chris Crawford; two grandsons, Tim Wehrle and Ryan Crawford, all of Katy, Texas; cousins, James Roy and Estelle Cravey of Normangee, Texas; brothers and sisters- in-law Fred and Effie McGilberry of Bedias and Mary Sue and Don Welch of Dallas. Following funeral services at the church at 1p.m., graveside services will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg, Texas, around 3 p.m. Memorial donations in his honor may be made to St. Peters United Methodist Church. Dr. Russell F. Briner
Dr. Russell F. Briner passed away on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007. Russell will be missed by each person he touched, especially his survivors: wife, Virginia; sister, Sue, both from San Antonio; daughter and her husband, Shavonne and Basil Conroy and grandson, Sean, of Dobbs Ferry, New York; and granddaughter, Alexandra Conroy, of San Antonio. Russell was always devoted to all of his many roles in life: husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, friend, mentor, teacher, leader and even sports enthusiast.
Born in Piqua, Ohio, on Feb. 19, 1939, to Melvin W. and Dorothy Chambers Briner, Russell and his family moved to Alvin, Texas, in 1949 where he graduated from high school. He is a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He received his PhD from Oklahoma State University, MBA from Texas A&M and undergraduate degree from Texas Tech. Dr. Briner was Director of the Division of Accounting and Information Systems for 11 of his 19 years as a Professor of Accounting at University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Briner has also visited and lectured in China at Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangshou universities. Prior to his UTSA career, he taught at Sam Houston State and University of Mississippi. A CPA and a CMA, he was a published author of textbooks and articles for accounting publications during his 40 years in the accounting profession. Dr. Briner was an active member and officer of the Institute of Management Accountants at local, state and national levels.
Arrangements are being handled by Mission Park North, 3401 Cherry Ridge, San Antonio, Texas, where visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 24 with military honors and prayer service at Fort Sam National Cemetery. Logan Dean West
Logan Dean West was cradled softly in the arms of Jesus on Aug. 19, 2007. Logan was the infant son of Katie Stembridge and Donald West; grandson of Dean and Ona Ownes and Mike and Laura Stembridge, great-grandson of the Rev. Fred and Kathryn Worthen, Glenn and Shelly Rodgers, and Erma Hamm; nephew to Amy West, Holli Tutt, Kimberly Swann, and Marvin Bullard. Services for Logan will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at Huntsville Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Interment will follow in Brooke Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas. Mrs. Orene Pogue
Mrs. Orene Pogue, 95 of Huntsville, passed away Aug. 21, 2007, in Walker County. She was born Oct. 13, 1911, in Walker County. Funeral services will held Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at 11 a.m. from the Little Bethel Holiness Church with Pastor Charles McGowan officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Keith Little, Andre O'Bryant, Cornelius O'Bryant, Jr., Leodis Gamble, Michael O'Bryant and Hernando O'Bryant.
Mrs. Pogue was a member of Little Bethel Holiness Church. She is survived by a son, Cornelius O'Bryant of Houston; daughters, Celuia Wilson of Houston, Shirley Gamble of Huntsville and Ora Harris of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Harold Dickey of Houston and Boyd Dickey of Los Angeles, Calif.; sister-in-law Kitana Dickey of LaMarque; 19 grandchildren, 41 great- grandchildren, 38 great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Dorothy S. Walker
Dorothy S. Walker was born in Johnstown, Penn., Nov. 6, 1910, and passed away Aug. 20, 2007, in Huntsville, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Robert N. Walker. She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Follin of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughter Ginger and husband, Bob Metz of Huntsville; son, Tom and wife Colleen Walker of Naples, Fla.; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Dorothy graduated from Wilson College with a degree in biology and music. She earned a second degree in music education from Eastman School of Music. She taught private piano lessons for several years. Her life, though, centered on her family. She wrote to her husband while he was stationed in Turkey during World War II, “I am proud to be the honored mother of your lovely and sweet children. I love you with my whole heart and soul!”
A woman of strength, kindness, tolerance, quiet energy, and love, Dorothy will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church, Huntsville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity.
Ashley Elkins
Ashley Elkins, age 29, made a peaceful transition to Heaven on August 25, 2007, after an intense and courageous battle with esophageal cancer. His fighting spirit will remain an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. Ashley was born on February 7, 1978, in Rochester, Pennsylvania and developed his ìTigerî spirit in the hometown of Beaver Falls. He was an integral part of the 1994 Beaver Falls High School state basketball champions. Ashley served as a proud member of the United States Army from 1996 ñ 2000, and received an Army Achievement Medal for service as combat medical aidman, while in Bosnia. Ashley graduated from ITT Technical Institute in 2002 with an Associates degree in the Electronics Engineering Technology program. He established his home in Huntsville, Texas, and was employed at Sam Houston State University as an Electronic Systems Specialist.
Ashley is survived by his wife, Emily, and his daughter, Madison Jo; his mother and stepfather, Joanna and Jim Greco; his father and stepmother, Dennis and Dolores Elkins; brother and sister in law, Shad and Michelle Elkins; stepbrothers, Vincent, Michael, and David Greco and Dillan and Holmes Dumez; mother and father in law, Suzanne and George Steed; brother in law, Adam Steed; Maternal grandmother, Thelma ìGrammyî Smith; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Ashley was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, June Alderman; and his maternal grandfather Leland ìPapaî Smith.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 27 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 28, 2007, at 10:00 am in Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow at Brooke Cemetery.
Ashley will always stay true in our hearts as the compassionate and loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend that each of us watched him be.
His years upon this earth may not have been many, but were lived to their fullest.
