Henry Leon Slaughter
Funeral services for Henry Leon Slaughter, Sr., 90, of Edgewood are scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at Hiett's LyBrand Chapel in Edgewood. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Slaughter passed away on Aug. 1, 2007, in Madisonville after a brief battle with lung cancer.
Henry Leon Slaughter was born Dec. 27, 1916, in Edgewood, to the late Leslie Edward and Martha Pearl Jones Slaughter. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Education and a Master's Degree in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University. He was most passionate about his career as a teacher and he also served as a prison warden, probation officer, economic developer and book publisher.
He lived in Edgewood the majority of his life, served as Mayor, and was a great asset to the community. Leon moved to Huntsville in 2006, to be near his grandchildren. He was a member of Texas A&M Alumni Association, Edgewood Lions Club and Cheatham Memorial United Methodist Church. In June of 2007, he was inducted into the Lions Club International Hall of Fame.
Along with his parents, Leon is also preceded in death by wives, Nola Faye Knight Slaughter, Maria Luisa Torregrosa Slaughter and Dorothy Lee West Slaughter; son, Dr. Jerry Slaughter; daughter, Anna Jo Cummings; and step-daughter, Angeles L. Villeda.
He is survived by his son, Henry Leon Slaughter, Jr. and wife, Lisa of El Paso; sister, Leslie Pearl Huddleston of San Antonio; daughter-in-law, Gayle Slaughter of Abilene; grandchildren, Leslie Slaughter and wife, Mary of Willis, Micah Slaughter and wife, Marla of Huntsville, Jody Slaughter and wife, Susan of New Waverly, Sheila Slaughter Richey and husband, George of Nashville, Tenn., and Madisonville, and Jeremy Slaughter of College Station, Helen Keaton and husband, Glenn of San Antonio, Mark Wyatt and wife, Mely of Edinburg, Sandy Wyatt and wife, Becky of Schertz, and Maria Slaughter of San Antonio; Leon's stepchildren and stepgrandchildren were very dear to him; stepchildren, Luisita L. Torregrosa, Amaury Lopez Candal and wife, Tamara, Carmen Lewis and husband, Bryan, Sara Lawrence and husband, Rick and Olga Fajardo; stepgrandchildren, Jose Guillermo Villeda, Christopher Lewis, Cantrell Monford, Angel Lawrence, Crystal Lawrence, Erick Fajardo and David Fajardo; nine great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Rita Slaughter Davis and her husband, Billy Davis for the wonderful care and tireless support they gave to Leon the last months of his life.
Visitation will be Friday evening, 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home in Edgewood.
Winnie Allen Simmons
Winnie (Maude) Allen Simons died in Boulder, Colo., of complications following a stroke. She was 92 years of age.
A Service in Celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church, in Huntsville, Texas, with the Reverend Bruce Hay presiding.
Born in Farwell, Texas, to Roy and Edith Allen, Winnie grew up in the Texas Panhandle near Stratford, Texas. Roy farmed and raised cattle near Kerick between Boise, Okla., and Stratford.
Winnie attended Stratford High School excelling in basketball and other sports. She graduated from high school in 1932. Thereafter she received degrees from the University of Houston (first graduating class) 1937 and the University of Texas with a Masters in Education in 1939. After graduating from University of Houston, Winnie began teaching Science and Physical Education at Huntsville High School where she met and married Bennie Simons in the fall of 1939.
Bennie began serving in the Army Air Corps in 1941. He was eventually assigned to Columbia, S.C., Winnie joined him in Columbia and their first child Leonard Allen was born. Following the war, the couple moved back to Huntsville where a second son, David Ross, was born.
Bennie completed his Masters of Library Science and served as Head Librarian at Sam Houston State Teachers College for many years. Winnie resumed teaching Physical Education and Biology. She taught at the Junior High and High School level, eventually training to become a School Counselor.
As a counselor, she developed an awareness of the importance of day care preschool in promoting childhood educational development for working couples and single-parent families. As a result, she spearheaded the creation of Huntsville's first low-income day care/preschool. In recognition of her work, this facility was named in her honor as the Winnie Simons Center.
Winnie was an active member of the Delta Zeta Sorority and the First United Methodist Church.
Following Bennie's death in 1989, Winnie moved to Colorado to be closer to her sons and grandchildren. She lived for several years in Castle Rock and then moved to Boulder.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Simons of Huntsville Texas, her mother, Edith Allen and her father, Roy Allen of Stratford, Texas, three brothers, Eual (Buck) Allen, of Dalhart, Texas, George Allen and William (Bill) Allen, of Stratford, Texas. She is succeeded by her sons, Allen Simons of Fruita, Colo. and David Simons of Boulder, Colo.; granddaughters, Melinda Sory of Colorado Springs, Julie Simons of Madison, Wis., Emily Simons of Baltimore, Md., and grandsons, Andrew Simons of Denver, Colo., and Jimmy Simons of Washington D.C., and great-grandson, Elijah Sory of Colorado Springs, as well as many nieces and nephews in the Texas Panhandle and East Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Huntsville Community Children's Center, formerly called the Winnie Simons Center.

Georgia L. Wilson
Funeral services for Georgia L. Wilson will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at Bedias Baptist Church, in Bedias, Texas. Interment will follow the service at Willow Hole Cemetery, in North Zulch.
Mrs. Wilson will lie in state from noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007, at Huntsville Funeral Home with the family receiving guests from 6- 8 p.m. Memorial considerations may be made to the Bedias Baptist Church.

Henry Ray Small
Henry Ray Small was born March 11, 1933, and passed away Aug. 2, 2007.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at 11a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church with interment being held Aug. 4, 2007, at 2 p.m. at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Anderson, Texas.
Bryan Clifton McHenry
Bryan Clifton McHenry was born Oct. 9, 1953 to Holland and Nola McHenry in Sheridan Wyo. The sun set on his life July 31, 2006. Bryan moved to Huntsville in 1972 to earn a degree in Criminal Justice after receiving an Associate Degree from Casper College in Casper, Wyo. It was at this time he met Mertha Irving and they were married Jan. 17, 1976. In Sheridan, Bryan spent 20 years driving an eighteen wheeler cross country. He earned the highest safety awards for never being involved in an accident. Trucking provided many wonderful opportunities for him and his family to travel and learn about the country. They visited 49 states and Canada.
In 1992, the McHenry family returned to Huntsville. Bryan finished his Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice and minored in English. He went on to earn his Masters in English and minored in ESL. During this time Bryan also earned his certification while teaching 4th grade at Samuel W. Houston Elementary Soon after receiving his Masters, Bryan became a lecturer in the English department at Sam Houston State University. He also taught ESL for four years at Conroe High School. He had a love for knowledge and enjoyed trying to pass that love on to his students. Bryan was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, camping, driving a team of draft horses and fishing. The Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming always held a special place in his heart; it was home. His other hobbies included photography, crocheting, writing poetry, leather tooling, and cross word puzzles. He also enjoyed the classics.
Bryan leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Mertha, 2 wonderful sons Jaryn Quade of Buffalo Wyo. and Kody Clifton McHenry of Huntsville; God son Christopher Crawford of Huntsville; parents Nola and Holland McHenry of Sheridan, Wyo., mother-in-law Hattie Irving; sisters Tracy Richie and husband Elliott of Amarillo, Texas, Hollie Braunschweig and husband Bryan of Holts Summit, Mo; brother-in-law Wayne Irving and wife Lois of Huntsville; brother-in-law Frazier Nickens of Houston along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Hadd McHenry.
A service in celebration of his life will be held Sunday Aug. 6, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home.

Verna Beatrice Jones Alston
Verna Beatrice Jones Alston, 84, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, at Memorial Medical Center-Livingston in Livingston, Texas.
She is survived by her husband, John C. Alston of Livingston; daughter, Dicki L. Alston of Beaumont, daughter Libby Alston Gibson of Huntsville; granddaughter, Elizabeth Alston Gibson of Huntsville, granddaughter, Nena Beatrice Gibson of Huntsville; cousins Kirby Walker of Seattle, Wash., Pat Walker of Houston, Carolyn Nixon of Livingston; sisters-in-law, Fay Alston of Livingston and Emma Rabel of Weimar; special friend, Marjorie Eilson of Livingston and loving caregiver, Rita Alanis of Livingston.
She was preceded in death by her father, Donnis Jones, her mother, Nettie Jones and her stepfather, C.E. Simmons.
She was born Nov. 8, 1922 in Moscow, Texas, the daughter of Donnis and Nettie (Leggett) Jones.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 10, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Livingston, Texas. The Rev. James Frazier, Dr. Don Willis, Dr. Michael Mayhugh and Mary Bates will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Mike Dabney, Joe Dabney, Jr., Bubba Watson, Judson Pritchard, Johnny Holleman, Johnny Monk, Stan Nadolski and Hank Alston. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Davis, Jerry Riley, Justin Cude, George Harrell, Corry Jones, Micah Best, Matthew Best, Kirby Walker, Sidney Adams, Stan Bates and Friendship Sunday School Class.
Bertha Countryman
Bertha L. Countryman was born March 15, 1912, in Afton, Okla., and died Aug. 7, 2007, in Huntsville, Texas.
She was preceded in death by husband, Wayne Countryman, who passed away 27 years ago; four sisters and one brother. Bertha is survived by daughter, Betty Daniel and husband Walter; grandchildren, Lisa Daniel, Susan Stringer and husband Art, Rick Pearce and Larry Pearce and wife Loretta; great-grandchildren, Larry, Suzie, Jenny, Lacy, Joshua, Heather, Cody, Ashley and Taylor; great-great granddaughters, Cory and Cailyn; brother-in-law, Rev. Jack Countryman of Humble; sister, Artie Whitely of Miami, Okla. and other nieces and nephews. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church.
Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 10, 2007, 10 a.m. in the Chapel of the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral home with Brother Joe Barnes officiating. She will lie in state from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 9. Interment will follow at Brooke Cemetery.
