Thelma Messerschmidt
Memorial services for Thelma Faye Messerschmidt, 69, Mabank, were held Oct. 28, 2004, at the Mabank Church of Christ with James Harness officiating, under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank.
Messerschmidt was born May 6, 1935, in Texas, and died Oct. 25, 2004, in Mabank. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary (Penrod) Barnett and father, Edward Barnett.
She was a homemaker and resident of Mabank for six years.
Survivors include her sons, Mike Messerschmidt, Apopka, Fla.; Ned L. Messerschmidt, Baltimore, Md.; David O. Messerschmidt, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; and Steven R. Messerschmidt, Winter Springs, Fla.; six grandchildren; sister, Clara McMullon, Mabank; brothers, Eugene Barnett, Calif.; and Clarence Barnett, Mabank; nieces, nephews, other family members and a host of friends.
Gavin Patrick
Services for Gavin Patrick, 4, Kemp, were held Nov. 8, 2004, at Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home in Kemp, with the Rev. Dub Henry officiating. Interment followed at High Cemetery in Van Zandt County.
He was born Joshua Gavin Patrick in Dallas Feb. 29, 2000, and passed away in Gun Barrel City, Nov. 5, 2004.
He attended Pre-Kindergarten in Kemp.
Survivors include his father, Josh Patrick, and Tammy Martin of Kemp; mother, Arlene (Chilton) Patrick of Wellington; sisters, Jaddie Patrick, Katie Martin and Christina Martin, all of Kemp; paternal grandparents, Terry and Dawn Kimbrell, Seven Points; Curtis Nance of Largo, Fla.; maternal grandparents, Jan Colmenero of Haskell, Ben Chilton of Wellington, and Duaine and Donna Walsh of Mabank; paternal great grandparents, Wayne and Ann Nance of Seven Points, Marquita Patrick of Payne Springs, Thelma Dozier; Polly Darden of Largo, Fla.; paternal great-grandmother, Faye Nell Nance, Mabank; and many other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Curtis Nance, Joey Patrick, Chance Chilton and Greg Palicos.
Chuck Lewis
Services for Charles V. "Chuck" Lewis, 73, Malakoff, were held Nov. 12, 2004, at the Tomlinson Funeral Home Chapel in Malakoff with Eston Williams officiating. Burial was in Highland Cemetery near Anna under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home in Malakoff.
Lewis was born Dec. 28, 1930, in Irving to Clifton and Mary Lewis and passed away Nov. 8, 2004, in his residence at Fisherman's Wharf. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ann Thomas. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in the Strategic Air Command during the Korean War.
He was the owner and operator of Fisherman's Wharf Marina for 29 years.
He provided weekly fishing reports on Cedar Creek Lake for area newspapers.
Survivors include his longtime companion and best friend, Sam Wise, Malakoff; daughter, Lyn Kulenburg and her husband, Bill, Littleton, Colo.; granddaughter, Kate Gazzaway and her husband, Joe, Littleton, Colo.; great-granddaughters, Kiresten and Morgan Gazzaway, Littleton, Colo.; foster grandchildren, Jake and Debby Gazzaway, and foster great-grandchildren, Justin and Dillon Gazzaway, all from Murfreesboro, Tenn.; nephews, Darren Lewis and Dwayne Thomas; niece, Denise Thomas; and brother, Robert Lewis and wife, Laura, Carthage.
Pallbearers were Roy Graham, Johnny Daniels, Gordon Tilley, Marty Dean, Gary Sparrow and Richard Bailey.
L.E. Ficklin
Services for the Rev. L.E. Ficklin, 81, Gun Barrel City, were held Nov. 11, 2004, in the Anderson Clayton Bros. Chapel with the Rev. Jim Shafer officiating.
Interment was in the King Cemetery under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. of Kemp.
Ficklin was born July 27, 1923, in Powell to the late Frank and Blanch (Strange) Ficklin and died Nov. 8, 2004, in Gun Barrel City. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Aletha Mae Rogers, and a stepson, Gene Vance.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. He was a minister for more than 40 years and started at least three churches in the lake area. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Seven Points.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ficklin, Gun Barrel City; son, L.E. Ficklin Jr., and his wife, Myra Sue, Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; daughters, Linda Hogden, Dallas; Pam Causey and her husband, Kenneth, Granberry; and Brenda Rees and her husband, Ken, Canton, Mo.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; stepson, Milton Vance and his wife, Mozell, Mesquite; and stepdaughter, Shirley Freeman, Lakeside Village.
Eddie Vernon Laster
Services for Eddie Vernon Laster, 65, Kemp, were held Nov. 12, 2004, at the Christian Life Center in Gun Barrel City, with Pastor Barry Boatright officiating. Interment was in Mabank Oaklawn Cemetery in Mabank under the direction of Peaceful Rest Funeral Home, Dallas.
Laster was born Aug. 31, 1939, in Marshall to the late Marie and Willie B. Laster, and died Nov. 6, 2004, in Kemp.
He worked for American National Insurance Co. for 27 years, and at retirement was a staff manager. He later worked for the Kemp ISD as a bus driver for eight years. He was known for his barbecue business in Kemp, especially his red beans.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Vera Laster; daughter, Yvette Laster; sons, Eddie Jr., Benjamin, Robert (Bobby); nine grandchildren; sisters, Doris Green and Mary Daniels; and a brother, Robert.
David R. Coffee
Services for David Riley Coffee, 61, Leagueville, were held Nov. 10, 2004, in the Lake Athens Baptist Church, Athens, with the Rev. John Green officiating. Burial was in Leagueville Cemetery, under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens.
Coffee was born Oct. 21, 1943, in Dallas to David Riley Coffee Sr., and Flossie Grissom Coffee, and died Nov. 7, 2004, at an Athens hospital.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Rangers Special Forces during the Vietnam War. He received a Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Expert M14, National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal.
Survivors include his wife, Linda, Leagueville; sons, David Ray Coffee, Centerville, Tenn.; Larry James Troy, Huntsville; and Travis Hollis Taylor Coffee, Canton; daughters, Sherile Lynn Carpenter, Poynor; Stephanie Pike Coffee, Cedar Creek Lake area; and Linda Dawn Faircloth, Leagueville; brother, Lloyd D. Coffee, Hewitt; sister, Carolyn Conch, Hubbard; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Lester L. Nabors
Services for Lester L. Nabors, 85, of Kerens, were held Sep. 29 at Calvary Baptist Church of Trinidad with Rev. Jim Bob Farmer officiating.
Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery on U.S.Highway 175 under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.
Nabors was born July 22, 1919 in Sulphur Bluff, Tx, and passed away Sept. 26 in Kerens.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Linnie Mae (Duncan) Nabors; his father, James Madison Nabors; his daughter, Mary Ella Cope and his daughter, Glenda Mae Thrasher.
He was a farmer, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of the American Legion and VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Wilda Nabors of Kerens; daughter, Brenda K. (Nabors) Howell of Malakoff; son, Boyce Nabors of Wills Point; two step sons Ron Lightfoot of Indiana and Barry Lightfoot of Odessa; twelve grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; sister, Erma Sue Collins of Lubbock; ten care givers, Faye Baker, Tina Martinez, Sharon Brown, Sarah Raymond, Saunya Lott, Debbie Watson, Sandra Wood, Tamera Tilly, Jon and Lila of Hospice of Cedar Creek Lake and Angels @ Home; nieces, nephews, other family members and a host of friends.
Pallbearers were Denver Spears, Lloyd Thrasher, Charlie Williams and Richard Craft.
Bobby Jenkins
Services for Bobby N. Jenkins, 75, of Kemp were held Oct. 6 at Anderson Clayton Brothers Funeral Home in Kemp, with Rev. Jim Renfro of Calvary Baptist Church, Kemp officiating.
Burial was in Ware Cemetery under the direction of Anderson Clayton Brothers Funeral Home in Kemp.
Jenkins was born on May 14, 1929 in Edhube (Bonham), to Claude and Timmie Horner Jenkins, and passed away Oct. 3 in Kemp.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Claudis (Buck) Jenkins and Aubrey Lynwood Jenkins, six sisters, Othel Pippin, Irene Jenkins, Emily Hammer, Helen Wingate, Etta Merle Jenkins and Nona Beth Johnson.
He was a longtime resident of the Kemp area where he continued to raise cattle after his retirement from the Texas Department of Transportation in 1991, with over 23 years of service, Prior to his tenure with TxDot, he traveled worldwide many years for Continental Electronics, Dallas. He was liked and respected by all who met him. He never met a stranger.
Survivors included his wife, Doris Jenkins of Kemp; daughters, Vickki Markaverich and husband, John of Shreveport, La, and Karen Carrillo and husband, File of Forney; seven beloved grandchildren and seven wonderful great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Pallbearers were nephews, Cliff Marquart, Stephen Marquart, Danny Thompson, Jeffery Thompson, Gary Paul Freeman and Kevin Freeman.
Ralph (R.L.) Harrison
Services for Ralph (R.L.) Harrison, 89, of Athens, were held Oct. 5 at Eubank Memorial Chapel, Mabank, with Dr. James Harms officiating.
Burial was at Oaklawn Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Mabank.
Harrison was born February 13, 1915 in Dallas and passed away Oct. 3 in Athens.
He was preceded in death by his father, W.M. Harrison; his mother, Lula Johnson; brother, H. Boyd Harrison; and his brother, Clyde M. Harrison.
He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Mabank where he served as a deacon and as Sunday school teacher of the friendship class for many years. He was employed by Dallas Power and Light in the meter division for 47 years and retired in 1980. He had lived in the Cedar Creek Lake area since the 60's.
Survivors include his wife, Edith McClain Harrison of Tool; son, James B. Harrison of Rockwall; son, Wray A. Harrison of Palo Alto, Ca.; three grandchildren, Carl, John and Anika Harrison.
Vernon Ruben Jock
Services for Vernon Ruben Jock, 73, of Malakoff were held Oct. 5 at the First Assembly of God Church in Malakoff with Ken Jones officiating.
Burial was in Trinidad Cemetery under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home in Malakoff.
Jock was born August 8, 1931 in Trinidad to Ernest and Faye Taylor Jock, and he passed away Oct. 2 in Athens.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Jock who passed away in 1999.
He worked for Royall Chevrolet as the Service manager for 17 years, and then worked for the TU Electric plant in Trinidad for 19 years and was assistant plant manager upon retirement.
Survivors include his children and spouses, Mark and Lisa Jock of Mt. Vernon; Dianna and Bert Carriere of Malakoff; two brothers, Riley Dee Jock of Lafayette, La and Sam Jock of Mabank; six sisters, Esther Ruth Abbe of Trinidad, Betty Lou Stower of Red Bluff, Ca, Fayriene Mitchell of Waller, Dean Metcalf of Carthage, Kathy Prnka of Trinidad, and Kay Hashaw of Hempstead; and seven grandchildren.
Earl W. Tedder, Sr.
Mass of Christian Burial for Earl W. Tedder, Sr., 78, of Kaufman were held Oct. 4 at the St. Ann Catholic Church in Kaufman with Father Joseph Mehan officiating.
Burial was in Pyle Prairie Cemetery under the direction of Anderson Clayton Brothers Funeral Home of Kemp.
Tedder was born on August 21, 1926 in Kemp to the late Floyd and Ova Mae Seabolt Tedder, and passed away on Sept. 30, in Kaufman.
He was preceded in death by his son, Earl W. Tedder, Jr. on May 30, 1997.
He attended St. Ann Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and also served his country in the Army during World War II.
Survivors include his son, Timothy Tedder of Kemp; daughters, Vicki McCann of Kaufman and Mary Tedder of Kaufman; brothers, Joe Tedder of Mineola and Jack Tedder of Quinlan; and sisters Margie Scott of Kemp and Janice Kimbrell of Gilmer.
O. W. Baack
Services for O.W. Back, 72, of Tool, were held Oct. 5 at the Tomlinson Funeral Home Chapel in Seven Points with Bro. Ted Eaton officiating.
Burial was at Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis, under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home.
Baack was born March 5, 1932 in Giddings, and passed away Oct. 3 in Tool.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Ruth Baack; his parents Otto Carl and Frances Baack; daughter Caroline Baack; grandson, Johnny Preston; and brother, Otis Baack.
He retired from the Southern Pacific Railroad where he worked as a Roadmaster.
Survivors include eight daughters and spouses, Ruth and Edwin Spaniel of Waxahachie; Nancy and David Frisby of Ennis; Mary Graham, Debbie Pickett and Janet Lortz all of Tool; Karen Wondra of Houston, Sharon and Russell Mrazek of Luling; Tammy and Robert Pitt of Dallas; three sisters, Frances Proske and Mildred Burger of Giddings, and Marilyn Daggs of Fort Worth; 22 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.
