Services for Lila Wandaline Barber, 72, Gun Barrel City, were held Aug. 7, 2004, a the Tomlinson Funeral Home Chapel in Seven Points with Bro. Barry Boatright officiating. Burial was in Payne Springs Cemetery under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home of Seven Points.
Barber was born April 25, 1932, in Canton to Walter W. and Cecil Mae Petty, and died Aug. 4, 2004, in Mabank.
She was a past member of the local Eastern Star in Gun Barrel City.
Survivors include her husband, Leroy Barber, Gun Barrel City; children, Royse Barber, Mabank; Laroy Barber, Sachse; Patricia Harrod, Payne Springs; Shelia McGee, Tool; Brandi Barber, Gun Barrel City; and Jason Barber, Gun Barrel City; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Vera Friedrich
Services for Vera Friedrich, 79, Tool, were held Aug. 4, 2004, at Sardis Cemetery with interment in Sardis Cemetery, under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank.
Friedrich was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Kemp, Okla., and died Aug. 1, 2004, in Kemp. She was preceded in death by her mother, Audra Mae (Box) Cooper, and father Jimmie Lee Cooper, daughter, Sandy Potter and sister, Ola Whaley.
She was a police department dispatcher.
Survivors include her daughters, Cheryl Carpenter and husband, Leon, Longview; Karen Shirsty, Longview; son-in-law, Bert Potter and wife, Susan, Dallas; sister, Ruth Rallis and Harold Greenhaw, Kemp; brother, James Cooper and wife, Beth, Allen; nephews, Richard Whaley and wife, Kathey, Allen; John Cooper and wife, Sherry, Plano; nieces, Lisa Cooper and Bobby Griffith, Plano; Leah (Cooper) and Richie Santa Cruz, Allen; great nieces and nephews, Tyler and Meagan Whaley and Kyle Santa Cruz, other family members and a host of friends.
Myrtle Ashton Runkles
Services for Myrtle Ashton Runkles, 98, Rice, were held Aug. 5, 2004, in First Assembly of God Church, Eustace, with the Rev. Keith Berry officiating. Interment followed in Moorehead-Melton Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.
Runkles was born Feb. 3, 1906, in Alvarado and died Aug. 4, 2004, in Rice. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Jenell Francis Nichols Harden and Mary Ann Camiani Cunningham; father, Eli Thomas Ashton; mother, Beula Land (Halbert) Ashton Williams; sisters, Hattie May, Ruby Frances, Ora Manorvia, Jessie Richmand, Vera Valden and Joyce Williams; brothers, Archie Lee Ashton, Eli Thomas Ashton and Leonard J.T. Ashton.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her daughter, Peggy June Camiani McCreary Latham, 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and a host of friends.
Pallbearers were William Hullett, Michael Bullard, Carl Bullard, Steve Morales, Buddy Ross and Steve Oyba.
Edward Lee Stringer
Services for Edward Lee Stringer, 76, of Mabank, were held Oct. 1 at Anderson-Clayton Funeral Home in Kemp with his nephew, Pastor Shade Stringer and Pastor Eddie Neese officiating.
Burial was at Roselawn Memorial Park in Seagoville under the direction of Roselawn Funeral Home.
Stringer was born August 28, 1928 in Kaufman County and passed away on Sept. 29 in Dallas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Rosa Stringer, and by his sister, Geraldine Landers.
He was a Deacon in the Prairieville Baptist Church, and he served four years in the Navy during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of thirty years, Mamie Niemeyer Stringer of Mabank; two daughters, Teresa Rozell of San Antonio, and Lanette Upchurch and husband, Charlie of Mabank; one son, Jerry Cowart and wife, Suzanne of Mesquite; four grandchildren, Chastity Kennedy and Jason of Midlothian, Tammy Truelove and Ryan of Mabank, Rebecca Cowart and Troy Cowart of Mesquite; nine step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild, Dylan Raburn of Mabank; ten step-great grand kids; sister Betty Jo McKenzie of Mabank; three brothers, Gerald E. Stringer and Theodore B. Stringer of Garland, and Kenneth E. Stringer of Kilgore; numerous nieces and nephews and loving friends.
Pallbearers were Ryan Truelove, Jason Kennedy, Sam Stringer, Nathan Stringer, Jimmy Stringer, Scott Stringer and David McKenzie.
Ioana W. Sorenson
Ioana (Onie) Winifred (Naig) Sorenson, 75, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., passed away August 2, 2004, at the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.
A Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, August 7, from Christ Our Redeemer Church, Niceville, Fla. with Fr. Roy Marien as the celebrant.
Ioana was born July 4, 1929, in Madison, Minn., a daughter of Maynard and Winifred Naig. She grew up and graduated from Clear Lake, S.D. schools. She was united in marriage to Richard Sorenson Sept. 22, 1952.
She worked with charities in Dubuque, Iowa and Anoka, Minn.
She moved to Irving in l969 where she spent enjoyable time in real estate - advancing to become V.P. of the Merrill Lynch office, Irving. She also served as the Irving Board of Realtor's president.
Upon retirement she lived at Cedar Creek Lake, Gun Barrel City, and then moved to the Emerald Coast, Fort Walton Beach, Fla. in 1996.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fort Walton Beach.
She is survived her son, Daniel (Susan) of Niceville, Fla.; and daughter, Kathy (Greg) White of Rowlett; sisters, Mary Sorenson, Hastings, Minn.; and Maynora (DeWayne) Kirk, Loveland, Colo.; six grandchildren: Anita, University of Florida; Ryan, Dylan and Lana , Niceville, Fla.; Kevin and Douglas, Rowlett; and many adoring nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Tommy Naig.
She was dearly loved and respected by all who knew her. She will be deeply missed. Her cheery greeting, smile, lilting laugh, quick wit and gracious presence will never be replaced.
As requested, NCS of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. was entrusted with her arrangements. Committal will be at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola, Fla. at a later date.
Clarence 'Jr.' Mixon
Services for Clarence Mixon Jr., 72, Mabank, were held Aug. 21, 2004, at the Mabank Church of Christ with Bob Clamon and James Haynes officiating. Interment followed in Oaklawn Cemetery in Mabank under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.
Mixon was born Feb. 4, 1932, in Mabank and died Aug. 18, 2004, in Tyler. He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Jefferson Mixon Sr., and his mother, Chesley Mixon.
He was a mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Loree Mixon, Mabank; sons, Jerry Lee "Yogi" Mixon, Mabank; Royce Glynn Mixon and wife Diane, Mabank; and Donald Ray Mixon and wife Sherri, Mabank; 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Reba Ann Blade, Irving; and Lillie Mae Gage, Mabank; brothers, George Earl Mixon, Mabank and A.J. Mixon, Mabank.
Marcia Gale Lobban
Funeral services for Marcia Gale Lobban, 62, Kemp, were held Aug. 25, 2004, at Central Baptist Church, Mabank, with the Rev. Kenneth Hensley officiating. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery. Following the burial, family and friends gathered at her church to celebrate her life and homecoming with the Lord.
Lobban was born Jan. 2, 1942, in Pampa and died Aug. 22, 2004, after a lengthy illness.
In 1969, she and her late husband, Jim Lobban, moved to Mabank. She continued her 20 years of experience as a beautician. One of her clients said she was an "artist." She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Mabank.
She lived life to the fullest each day, and loved to laugh and generously loved all.
Survivors include her sister, Vickie, San Antonio; brother, Randall, Dodge City, Kan.; sons, David Gurley, Ennis; Michael Gurley, Dickinson; and Greg Lobban, Mabank; daughter, Kelly Collins, Kemp; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Pallbearers were James Chartier, Tony Hankins, David Collins, Mike Cooper, Wayne Sliger and Earl Davis.
Archie Haws
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for Archie "Daddy B" Burnon Haws, 81, Kemp, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church, Mabank. Arrangements are under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.
Haws was born July 27, 1923, in Parker County to Archie and Eula Haws, and died Aug. 21, 2004, in Dallas. He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Leah Da Onne Wilson.
He spent his school years in Post and then attended the military academy in Roswell, N.M. (NMMI). After two years there, he enrolled in the University of Illinois, where he was a member of Delta Chi fraternity.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, and served in the Fourth Cavalry. He was at Utah Beach on D-Day and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He met the Russians at the Rhine River, and was among the troops liberating Paris.
He earned many commendations, including the Purple Heart and five Bronze Stars. He was proud of his service and served again in the Korean War.
In civilian life, he was in the retail business, following in his father's footsteps. He was a member of Cedar Creek Country Club and an avid golfer.
Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Betty; daughters and their husbands, Denise and Chris Allen, Rowlett; Diana and Monty Salter, Bastrop; two stepchildren, Scott Braud and wife Patty, Dallas; Rene Braud, Houston; grandchildren, Elliott Jackins and wife Tammy, Keller; Jason Salter and wife Heather, Amarillo; Stephen Salter, San Marcos; stepgrandchildren, Alexis and Nicholas Braud, Dallas; great-grandchildren, Macy, Avery and Tyler Jackins; numerous loving cousins and many, many friends.
A memorial fund has been established in his name. All donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 112 W. Mt. Vernon St., Mabank, TX 75147.
Betty R. Patterson
Services for Betty R. Patterson, 73, Eustace, were held Aug. 26, 2004, in Eubank Memorial Chapel, Mabank, with Rev. James Howard officiating. Interment followed in Payne Cemetery, Henderson County, under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home in Mabank.
Patterson was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Louisiana to Travis and Thelma (Smith) Houston and died Aug. 23, 2004, in Tyler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Law, one brother, one sister, and one great-grandchild.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church, Eustace and Eastern Star.
Survivors include her son, Lonnie, Eustace; daughter, Linda Bryant, Carrollton; brothers, Vernon Houston, Wills Point; Travis Houston, Red Oak; sisters, Arista Davis, Grand Saline; Marilyn Emmel, Houston; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Robert W. Allison
Memorial services were held for Robert Wm. Allison, 63, Kemp, Aug. 21, 2004, at Eubank Memorial Chapel, Mabank with the Rev. Byron Jones officiating.
Allison was born May 1, 1941, in Sayer, Okla., and died Aug. 19, 2004, in Gun Barrel City. He was preceded in death by his father, (unknown) Allison and mother, Bessie Payne.
Bob came to the lake area in 1992 and loved the small town atmosphere.
He loved camping and fishing so Cedar Creek Lake was the perfect place for him.
He met his wife, Elsie in 1993 and became part of the family shortly after.
He loved to cook and work outside and worried about every single plant and flower he owned. He was as crazy about his plants as they were of him.
He loved fishing trips with his stepsons and would tell anyone who would listen about them.
There was not a single thing he would not do for Elsie and the kids, or anyone else for that matter.
He would always make visitors feel welcome.
His squash dressing and enchilada casserole will be missed.
Bob was a caring man. He had so many friends who he loved and who loved him.
He had recently found his family after a separation of more than 30 years. He was so happy he had found them.
He had a determination to live and he had struggled with is illness the last three years. He fought death more than once. He was a fighter and stubborn and that is what kept him going the last three years.
He was a wonderful man who was loved, admired and respected by everyone who knew him. He will never be forgotten.
