Dr. Shelton, 83, was born in Sapulpa, Okla., and died July 22, 2004, of complications of Alzheimer's disease at the Mabank Nursing Home.
She was well-versed in speech and language pathology, Montessori techniques and learning disabilities.
Her first husband, Marven Walter Ford, died from injuries received in a 1954 oilfield accident. At that time, June became a widowed mother of four, majoring in education at the University of Oklahoma to become a schoolteacher.
Her focus changed when she became frustrated that her third-grade son wasn't learning to read as well as she believed he should.
So she turned her attention to special education, and became an authority on many aspects of how people learn.
In 1976, she founded the Shelton School and Evaluation Center, a respected private Dallas school for people with learning disabilities.
Her second husband, D.W. Shelton, an economics professor at the University of North Texas, died in 1998.
She had a long career working with children with learning disabilities that began while she was studying for her doctorate. She worked for the Child Study Center at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center.
After graduating in 1965, she moved to Dallas, where she was director of the day study unit for the pediatric neurology division at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
Her next assignment was director for the language disabilities program at Texas Women's University in Denton.
Then she returned to Dallas where she worked for the Dean Memorial Learning Center.
After six years she resigned her post with the Dean center.
A group of parents approached her about opening a school.
In fall 1976, the June Shelton School opened with 48 students. This fall, the Shelton school expects to have more than 800 students, from 3-year-old to high school seniors. It has 232 employees. She served as the school's executive director until 1985.
"She was an amazing person," her son, John Ford of Gun Barrel City said. "Had my father not died in 1954, she probably would have continued as a housewife and life would be so different for so many people."
In addition to her son, Shelton is survived by daughters, Keri Ford Saling, Justin; and Kaye Ford of Ventura, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Dallas, 7610 N. Stemmons Freeway, Suite 600, Dallas, TX 75247; or to the Shelton School and Evaluation Center, 15720 Hillcrest Road, Dallas, TX 75248.
