Services for Francis Louise (Lou) Wells, were held Oct. 16, 2003, at Eastgate Funeral Home Chapel in Garland. Interment followed at Dallas/Fort Worth Veterans Memorial in Arlington.
Wells died Oct. 13, 2003, in Dallas.
Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Stuart S. Wells, Gun Barrel City; children, Keith Wells and his wife, Joyce; Karen Elliott and her husband, Jim; Dale Wells and his wife, Vickie; grandchildren, Angela Robbins and her husband, William; Vanessa Elliott; Andrea Johnson and her husband, Terry; Cyrena Stewart and her husband, Tony; Shana Wells; Mike Wagner and his wife, Christina; great-grandchildren, Mady Wagner and Kaden Stewart; other family member and friends.
J.R. Thompson
Services for James Ray Thompson, 56, Edgewood, were held Sept. 28, 2003, at Roundflat Pentecostal Church with Brother Homer Morgan officiating. Burial was in Creagleville Cemetery under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home, Grand Saline.
Thompson was born Nov. 6, 1946, in Van Zandt County to Dee and Eula Mae Thompson and died Sept. 26, 2003, in a Tyler hospital. He was preceded in death by his father, Dee Thompson.
He was a welder and a life-long resident of Edgewood.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Thompson, Edgewood; daughters, Crystal Thompson, Edgewood; Jackie Smith, Dallas; Patty Bruton, Canton; and Shelia Thompson, Wills Point; ;mother, Eula mae Thompson, Edgewood; brothers, Bobby Thompson and Jerry Don Thompson, both of Edgewood; Kenny Thompson and David Thompson, both of Wills Point; sisters, Doris Guess, Gun Barrel City; and Pat Chaney, Athens; and eight grandchildren.
Vince Dee Canaday
Services for Vince Dee Canaday, Tool, were held Sept. 25, 2003, in Lowes Funeral Home in Quitman.
Canaday was born May 14, 1969, and died Sept. 21, 2003.
Survivors include his mother, Helen Canaday, Arlington; brothers, Ryan Canaday; Greg Canaday and wife, Lisa; sister, Teresa Canaday; children, Nichole Canaday, Hollie Canaday, and Evan Canaday; cousins, Jimmy Dale Kennimer, Jimmy Lyle Kennimer and Jacob Kennimer; girlfriend, Teresa Foster.
James A. Buckner Sr.
Memorial services for James Allen Buckner Sr., were held Sept. 25, 2003, at the Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church.
Buckner was born June 9, 1923, in Baird, Miss., to Alma Adams Buckner and Robert E. Lee Buckner and died Sept. 23, 2003, after a long illness.
He was an employee of the Bill Sherwin Shoe Company as a sales manager for 37 years.
He married Carolyn Henley on Nov. 27, 1947, in Tennessee. They made their home in Shreveport, La., moving to Tyler in 1975.
Since 1986, they have lived in Gun Barrel City and were members of the Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church.
Jim's reputation as the "candy man" at his church lived on through the memorial service as the ushers passed out candy mints to all who attended the service.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Buckner; son, James Allen Buckner Jr., and his wife, Jane Buckner, Dallas; daughter, Kathy Buckner Grisebaum and husband, James Grisebaum, Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, James Allen Buckner III (Jake) and his wife, Britten, Dallas; Michael Kyle Thomas, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Caroline Elizabeth Buckner, Dallas; sister, Frances Buckner Bishop.
Robert B. Chisum
Services for Robert "Bob" Brent Chisum, 72, Tool, were held Sept. 27, 2003, in the Cedar Creek Bible Church, with the Rev. Bob Perry officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Cove, Ark., under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home of Seven Points.
Chisum was born Mar. 30, 1931, in Amarillo, and died Sept. 24, 2003 at his residence.
He lived in the area for 40 years and worked for the U.S. Postal Service 30 years.
He was in the Navy for four years and received the Korean medal and United Nations Service Medal.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Chisum; children, Ken Hughes and wife, Wilma, Arlington; and Pat Loar and husband, Darrell, Topeka, Kan.; brothers, Vernie Carl Chisum, Tulsa, Okla.; and Ray Chisum, Oregon; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Ken Hughes, Kevin Hughes, Ernie Zimmerman and Darrell Loar.
Helen C. Smith
Services for Helen C. Smith, 78, Mabank, were held Oct. 22, 2003, at the Eubank Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Rick Wyatt and Kenneth Hensley officiating.
Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.
Smith was born Feb. 16, 1925, in Pauline and died Oct. 20, 2003, in Tyler. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.V. Smith in 2001.
She was a seamstress and a long-time member of the Central Baptist Church in Mabank.
Survivors include her daughter, Glynda Kilgore, Gun Barrel City; sons, Daryl Smith, Mineola; Joe Smith, Pflugerville; brother, Joe E. Hall, Lubbock; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Jo Ann Sands
Services for Jo Ann Sands, 75, Jackson Community near Canton, were held in the Eubank Chapel, Canton, with the Rev. Terry Adair officiating.
Burial was in Old Bethel Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Canton.
Sands was born May 24, 1928, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to James McMullen "Mack" and Virginia Eva Scott Thompson and died Oct. 16, 2003, in Dallas.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Maxine Holmes.
She was a member of the Jackson Baptist Church and a member of the Jackson Community for the past nine years.
She lived in Dallas for many years and worked for Chance-Vought for 10 years.
Survivors include her husband, Billy C. Sands, Jackson Community; sons, Chris Sands, Jackson Community; Mark Sands, Dallas; daughter, Laura Bryant, Mabank; sister, Eloise Wolfenberger, Houston; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Casey Sands, Roger Bryant Jr., Scott Sands, Robert Bryant and Paul Crayton.
Pauline Greathouse
Services for Pauline Greathouse, 82, Balch Springs, were held Oct. 20, 2003, at Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home in Kemp, with the Rev. Bobby Pritchett officiating.
Interment followed in Pyle Prairie Cemetery near Kemp.
Greathouse was born Eula Pauline Patman, April 4, 1921, in El Dorado, Okla., to Lonnie Patman and Vera McPherson Patman, and died Oct. 17, 2003, in Dallas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Greathouse April 18, 1992, and a son, Robert Donald Foster.
She married Marshall Greathouse in 1950.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Skip and Margie Greathouse, Boerne; Kyle Greathouse, Mesquite; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Leon Smith, Seagoville; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Jamie Patman, Ark.; sisters, Eugene Miller, Cedar Creek Lake; and Norma Winkle, Mesquite; and many other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Richard Hugghins, David Smith, Rhett Welch, Calvin Clary, Ryan Robnett and Richard Cox.
Jesse Barron
Services for Jesse M. Barron, 87, Malakoff, were held Oct. 21, 2003, at New Hope Corinth CME Church of Malakoff with the Rev. Micheal Green officiating.
Burial was in Steen Cemetery under the direction of Cain-Brown's Memorial Funeral Home, Malakoff.
Barron died Oct. 17, 2003, in a Dallas hospital.
She was a life-long resident of Cross Roads and Malakoff. She graduated from Fisher High School in Athens, Butler College in Tyler and Bishop College in Marshall.
She also attended North Texas State Teachers College in Denton and Texas Southern University in Houston.
She was a retired schoolteacher, having taught in the Cross Roads, Oakwood and Malakoff school districts for more than 33 years.
She was a member of New Hope Corinth CME Church of Malakoff, where she served as Sunday school superintendent, and a member of Order of the Eastern Star and the National Teachers Association.
Survivors include her daughter, Janice Peterson, Dallas; foster son, Milton Sheron Lawson, Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren; and other relatives.
Pallbearers were Johnny Davis, Jeffery Barron, Joe Barron, Lee Barron, Morris Payne and Philmore Peterson III.
Opal Evelyn Avant
Services for Opal Evelyn Avant, 71, Mabank, were held Oct. 8, 2003, at Eubanks Memorial Chapel with the Rev. P.E. Graham officiating. Burial was in Tool Cemetery under the direction of Eubanks Cedar Creek Funeral Home of Mabank.
Avant was born Nov. 9, 1931, in Henderson County, and died Oct. 3, 2003, at Presbyterian Hospital in Kaufman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Avant.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons, Danny and his wife, Shelly Avant; Scottie and his wife, Penny Avant; Travis and his wife, Cubby Avant; daughters, Bonnie Avant Hawkins, Connie Avant Valderas and her husband, David Valderas; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, many friends and family.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Travis Avant, Jr., Troy Avant, Harley Hawkins, Brandon Hawkins, Adam Avant and Andrew Valderas.
Honorary pallbearers were grandsons, Sammy Hawkins, Deric Bailey and Michael Moore.
Alford Hart
Services for Alford Francis "Pops" Hart, Seven Points, were held Oct. 18, 2003, at the Anderson Clayton Bros. Funeral Home Chapel in Kemp.
Hart was born March 24, 1944, in Honey Grove to the late Alford F. Hart Sr. and Frances Cantrell Hart, and died Oct. 10, 2003, at this residence.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Hart; sons, Billy Hart, Darrell Hart and Shane Hart; daughters, Denise Ferguson and Laura Combs; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Joann, Vickie and Shiela; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends and relatives.
Rhonda Lowery
Services for Rhonda Lowery, 37, Gun Barrel City, were held Oct. 18, 2003, at the Taylor Funeral Home Chapel in Leonard with Bro. Don Brooks officiating. Burial was in Leonard Cemetery under the direction of Taylor Funeral Home of Leonard.
Lowery was born Oct. 10, 1965, in Dallas to Floyd Edwards and Nancy Gene Sawyer Edwards, and passed away Oct. 15, 2003, in Athens.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Daisy Berry and step-grandfather, Troy Berry.
She was a housewife and married Chris Lowery in Kaufman Nov. 21, 1990.
