May Louise Van Hoosen
Date of Birth: April 11, 2010
Date of Death: November 4, 2010
May Louise Van Hoosen passed away November 4, 2010. It is so difficult to encapsulate a life of more than 99 years into the written word, especially one who survived some of the most rigorous of life’s challenges for almost a century.
Our “Mom” was born in Springfield, Missouri to John and May Hudson on the 11th of April 1911. She was raised in a rigorous truck farming life with an overload of chores from well before her early teens until she graduated from Davis School (8th grade). In 1926, at the age of 15, she married “Andrew Jason Rutherford.” They brought 10 children into this world. They bravely faced and persevered through the “Great Depression” and World War II. They divorced 1946.
In 1955 she married Merle Van Hoosen with whom she had one daughter.
After WWII “Mom” raised her children, virtually by herself. She constantly sacrificed and worked long hours for many years to “make ends meet.” She is loved by all her family. She was a Christian and is now happy in the arms of our creator. All who knew her are impressed with her love of the Bible.
It is difficult to select just one experience that we shared with mom. She was always there! Growing up life was not easy but we were happy and found joy in the everyday things we did together. The thing remembered most were the little things like sharing lunch, sewing and working together or just getting together for a chat. Through everyday living she taught us right from wrong and how to be the persons we are today. Mom was survived by 5 children (Mary Lou Rees, Johnny “J.C” Rutherford, Vona Upham, Shirley Lawson and Carol Spradling), 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren. The world is a better place because she was here.
Visitation was held November 6, 2010 at McCurdy Funeral home.
Arrangements under the care and guidance of McCurdy Funeral Home, 105 E. Pecan St., Lockhart, Texas 78644.
