Vick

Jo Ellen Allbright Vick passed away from this life on Dec. 21, 2004 after a long illness. Our mother and a good friend to many has gone to be with her Lord.

Known as a woman with tremendous strength and open arms for all, Jo was born in Artesia, N.M., and was the eldest child of George Walter and Ruth Hausselman Allbright. She was a proud graduate of Arlington High School and moved to Alpine in 1967 to attend Sul Ross State University and open the Lady Bug Salon. She met and married Walter Vick in 1968. She served as president of the Pilot Club and the American Legion Women's Auxiliary and was an active member of many other civic clubs in the community.

Jo is survived by her sons and their families, Jim and Carla Vick, Jonny and Judy Vick, Jason Vick, and Jarrett and Kelly Vick. She was loved dearly by her grandchildren, Jessica, Katie, Kyle, Tyler, Holden and Carter.

Her spirit and zest for making the best of any situation will be missed by us all. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be placed in her honor to the charity of your choice.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Dick Zimmer officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Funeral services are under the direction of Geeslin Funeral Home.

Capri

Cicely Ann Rau Capri, 88, of San Angelo, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2006 in a San Angelo hospital. Visitation will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Fort Davis, from 11:00a.m to 1:00 p.m., Firday, April 7, 2006. Funeral service will follow at the church at 1:00 p.m., officiated Rev. Ernie Vineyard and Rev. Joe Gossett. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetary. Geeslin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hess

John Hess was 92. He lived in Alpine for four years and is the father of Patricia Hess, a student at Sul Ross. He formerly lived in Tuscola (near Abilene) for 22 years, where he cut and delivered firewood until he was 80, earning the nickname "The Woodsman." Other family members include his former wife, Evelyn Hess; daughters, Sra Drake and Lisa Hess; sister Mary Baker and family; his cousin's wife, Elvita Hess; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. John's grandfather, Joseph Hess, was from Prussia (now Germany) and immigrated to America in the 1800's, settling in Wisconsin. His parents were Henry and Bertha Hess. John was born in Flandreau, South Dakota, and grew up in California, Utah, Hawaii, Florida and Colorado. A "Garden Memorial" will be held in his honor at the Alpine Cemetery (Elm Grove section 6B) on Sunday, April 9th from 2:00 p.m. to sunset. Those wishing to commemorate his birth into the afterlife may bring seeds, flowers or trees to be planted at the gravesite. You may call Patricia Hess at 432-837-2124.

Stovall

Wanda Lee Poteet Stovall, 77, of Terlingua, left us to be with her Heavenly Father on April 1, 2006. She passed away in Odessa Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 3, at 2:00 p.m. at the Big Bend Baptist Church in Terlingua. Burial followed at the Lajitas cemetery . Geeslin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stovall was born October 27, 1928 to William Tomas and Sybil Harris in Stephenville, Texas. She married Robert Daniel Stovall on January 23, 1947. They were in their fiftieth year of marriage when Robert joined his Heavenly Father on November 18, 1996. She had lived in Stephenville and Coleman while Robert was in the US Navy. Afterwards, they lived in Brownwood, Lohn, Pyote, Moran, Baird and Terlingua, where Wanda helped Robert with his teaching career with her love and support. She resided in Terlingua the past twenty-two years where she worshipped her Lord and Savior. She loved and prayed for all her many friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Daniel Stovall and her mother and father.

Her surviving family, are children, Robert Daniel and Judy Stovall, Debora Kaye and Tommy Varner, and Donald Cam Stovall. Grandchildren, Dana and Roman Zamarippa, Delight and Scott Dehorty, Darby Stovall, Trisha and Matthew Varner, Cara and Landon Hayes, Chelsea and Camri Stovall. Great-grandchildren, Jack and John Zamarippa, Delaney Stovall, and Tristan Dehorty. Close second family, Socorro and Lauren Rios and children.

Memorials may be sent to Terlingua CSD Building Fund.

Guadalupe ‘Chappo’ Ramirez

Guadalupe G. “Chappo” Ramirez, foreman of the Clayton Williams Ranch north of Alpine for 36 years, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at his home. He was 76.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 18 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, June 19, at the church with Father Mike Alcuino officiating. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Angels Cemetery directed by Alpine Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Ramirez was born Dec. 8, 1932, in Morelos, Coahuila, Mexico to Margarita and Andres Ramirez.

“He was a dedicated, loving husband and father,” his family said. “He took great joy in his grandchildren and was very proud of them. He was always a hard-working man and took great pride in his work. He was deeply loved and will be deeply missed.”

Survivors include his wife, Josie Ramirez of Alpine; daughter Raven Gutierrez of Fort Worth; son Jaime Ramirez and wife Merian of Alpine; three brothers, Manuel Ramos of Mexico, Domingo Ramirez of Alpine and Dolores Ramirez of Dallas; two grandchildren, Cassandra Gutierrez and Marcus Ramirez; and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind Toby, his beloved pet cat.

Opal Smith Parsons

Clara Opal Smith Parsons, 95, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Big Bend Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

A service of witness to the resurrection and a celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at First Presbyterian Church in Alpine with the Rev. Jobeth McLeod, minister, officiating.

Opal was born March 6, 1914, near Petersburg to Sarah Edna Williams Smith and Austin Texas Smith. The family moved to Abernathy, then Kress and then Canyon. Opal attended schools in Canyon, graduated from Canyon High School, attended West Texas State Teachers College and trained as a beautician. She worked in several beauty shops in Canyon, Amarillo, Seagraves and Wellington. She owned and operated a beauty shop in Canyon until 1967.

Opal married Bob Parsons on May 6, 1941. They had two daughters, Judith Ann and Bobbye Kaye. Bob died in 1965, and Opal moved to Alpine in 1967.

Opal was a dormitory director at Sul Ross State University from 1968 until retiring in 1986. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and active for many years in the Women’s Association. She was a china painter and a member of several bridge clubs. For the last 11 months of her life, she was in the care of the Alpine Valley Care Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three sisters, Alma Lawson of Levelland, Idell Roberts of Lockhart and Wynona Clement of Weatherford.

Survivors include her daughters, Judith Parsons of Alpine and Bobbye Van Dyke of Amarillo; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Guasp and husband Jorge, and Shannon Puckett and husband James; two great-granddaughters, Taylor Anne Puckett and Autumn Rene Guasp; two sisters-in-law, Aileen Hardaway and Osce Parsons, both of Amarillo; two brothers-in-law, Archie Roberts of Austin and Earl Clement of Arlington; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Memorial Fund at First Presbyterian Church, Box 1013, Alpine, TX 79831, to the History Excellence Fund at Sul Ross State University, P.O. Box C-114, Alpine, TX 79832, or a favorite charity.

Jeff W. Henderson

SAN MARCOS — Jeff W. Henderson, a distinguished alumnus of Sul Ross State University, died Thursday, June 11, 2009, in Austin. He was 67.

Celebration of life services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at First Christian Church in San Marcos with Dr. Jimmy Cobb officiating. Pennington Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Jeff was born Jan. 12, 1942, in Texon to Nettie Irene Delz Henderson and Curtis Weldon Henderson.

He graduated from Crane High School in 1960 and attended Odessa Junior College before transferring to Sul Ross, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1965 and his master’s in 1967.

He worked his way through college at various summer newspaper jobs across the state, and continued this practice after graduation, starting his teaching career to keep abreast of the “real world.” In the mid-1970s, he wrote a weekly syndicated travel column carried by 12 newspapers, and he wrote a weekly humor column for the San Marcos Daily Record.

Jeff taught journalism and photography, and served as director of student publications for 37 years on the college/university level, spending the last 29 years at Southwest Texas State (now Texas State University) in San Marcos. At SWT, he was the executive director of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association for 21 years.

His honors included distinguished alumnus of Sul Ross, the Hall of Fame of the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, the Fred W. Adams University Star Hall of Fame at Texas State, and professor emeritus of journalism and mass communications at Texas State.

“Jeff was very proud of his first Western fiction novel, which was published in 2008, and he was an extra in the film “Courage under Fire” and other films,” his family said. “He enjoyed traveling, taking family and students all over the United States and to other countries. He loved life and wanted to see as much of the world as he could, but his main joy, his calling, was teaching. Jeff will be dearly missed by all.

His parents preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Sharon Henderson; two daughters, Laura H. Humphries and husband Mark of San Antonio, and Tiffany Henderson of Dallas; one brother, Donnie Henderson of Odessa; and two grandchildren, Hank and Liv Humphries.

Richard Villanueva Sr.

MARFA — Richard M. Villanueva Sr., 89, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at his residence.

Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church followed by the funeral Mass Father Rolando Fonseca will officiate. Burial will be at the Marfa Catholic Cemetery directed by Alpine Memorial Funeral Home.

Mr. Villanueva was born Feb. 7, 1920, in Marfa to Concha and Bartolo Villanueva. He was a retired plumber and a Navy veteran.

Survivors include a son, Richard Villanueva Jr. of Marfa; three daughters, Delma V. Sotelo of El Paso, Norma V. Hartnett and Laura V. Marquez, both of Marfa; four sisters, Adeliada Fuentez, Paz Jurado and Maria Rosa Baeza, all of Marfa, and Romelia Hernandez of El Paso; three brothers, Urbano Villanueva of Marfa and Reynaldo and Charlie Villanueva, both of El Paso; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Abelardo Marquez Jr., David V. Sotelo, Luis V. Sotelo Jr., Michael Richard Sotelo, Robert Sotelo and Jeremy Hartnett.

McBride memorial service

A memorial service for Elizabeth Anne McBride, 67, will be held at 1 p.m. June 20, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church in Alpine. The family requests that donations to the church be sent in lieu of flowers.

The writer, artist, author and fine arts columnist for the Alpine Avalanche died two weeks ago at her home.

In Houston, a memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14, at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
