Story
George Bruce Story, 86, of Terlingua, an aviator, died on Dec. 2, 2004 at his residence. He was born Jan. 27, 1918, to Hod and Blanche Story in Butte Neb. He was reared a Methodist.
Bruce graduated from high school in 1935 in Butte. He married Maxine Hyer almost 57 years ago, on April 26, 1947. He was an aviator for 50 years. He was owner and flight instructor of Story Aviation in LaPorte, Texas, for 13 years. He was a long-time resident of Terlingua for 25 years. Bruce recently received the Charles Taylor Aviation Master Mechanic Award, which is one of the highest levels that can be awarded to aviation mechanics.
He is survived by his loving wife, Maxine Story, of Terlingua; sisters, Mary Gayle Roberts of Norfolk, Neb. nd June Brinker of Omaho, Neb.; and friends, Vernon Hammersly of Pearland, Texas, Jerry Spell of Alvin, and his dog, Harley.
Preceding him in death were his brother, Jack; sisters, Bona and Aileen; and parents.
Services were held Monday, Dec. 6 at Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine. Honorary pallbearers included all his buddies from the coffee table at Packsaddle Restaurant. Officiating was Cliff Haislip. Instead of flowers, please send memorials to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Wells
Ruth Wells, 80, passed away on Monday, Dec. 6, 2004 in a local nursing home after a battle with cancer.
Mrs. Wells was born on April 4, 1924, in San Saba to Thomas Luther and Nina Till Sutton. Ruth lived for many years in Pecos, and worked for the Pecos Enterprise for 17 years. After moving to Alpine, Ruth became very active in the community. She volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce, the Women's Hospital Auxiliary and the AARP. She was named "Citizen of the Year" in Alpine in 2000.
Ruth is survived by her children, Ronald Kesler and his wife Linda of Humble and Barbara Bunch and her husband George of Florida; granddaughter, Carey Herrera and her husband Ruben of Kemah; great-grandsons, Gabriel and Daniel Herrera of Kemah; sister, Maurine DeVoll and husband Sanford of Alpine; and her brothers, Mack Sutton and his wife Jean of Lampasas and Charles Worth Sutton of Arlington.
She is preceded in death by her grandson, Kevin Gradel.
Visitation will be held today from 10 to 11 a.m. at Geeslin Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home chapel today at 11 a.m. Graveside services will be held at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville near Austin on Saturday, Dec. 11.
Young
John Young III, 82, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at a Hurst hospital. Graveside services were held Saturday, Dec. 4, at Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine.
Mr. Young was an engineer, architect, pilot and grandson of Vaquero of the Brush Country.
John was born in 1922 in Alpine. He graduated from Sul Ross State University, and was trained as a fighter pilot in WWII. During the '50s, '60s and '70s, he was a pioneer in the aerospace industry in the development of quality control engineering in that field, working at Menasco, Bell and Murdock. In his spare time he built a sailboat from his own design and rebuilt a '66 E-type jaguar. Curiosity and inventiveness were an integral part of his personality.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Charlene Young; daughters, Jan Kelly and Trish Young; son-in-law, Ron Kelly; grandchildren, Kristy and Edmundo Cisneros, Mike and Tanya Kelly and Joanna Hunt; and his great grandson, Alexander Cisneros, who was born at 11:28 p.m. the night Mr. Young passed away.
Everman
Edward Curry Everman, 81, of Marfa, passed away Sunday, Dec. 12, 2005 at Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine.
Mr. Everman was born Feb. 15, 1923, in Chicago. He was a Catholic. He had been a transportation coordinator for the state of California for 18 years. After moving to Marfa in January 1985, he was employed by the Marfa Independent School District as a bus driver. He was a member of the American Legion, Association of Christian Truckers, and was a veteran of the Army/Air Force.
Mr. Everman is survived by his wife, Grace Everman of Marfa; three daughters, Janice Marie Kemmer of California, Judith Ann Hohlt of California and Linda Lou Holland of Oklahoma; two sons, James Everman of Spokane, Wash. and Robert Eugene Phelan of California; a brother, Dwayne Everman of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Williams
Margaret Cass Williams, 91, of Colorado Springs, Colo, formerly of Marfa, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004 where she had been living in the home of her daughter in recent years.
Funeral services were held, Tuesday, Dec. 14, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Kelly officiating. Burial followed at the Marfa cemetery . Memorial Funeral Home of Marfa was in charge of arrangements.
Margaret was born Nov 14, 1913, in Valley Mills, Texas, to James Henry (Jimmie) and Kathryn Louise (Katie) Cass, who were early Marfa residents. Margaret graduated from Marfa High School and attended McMurry College in Abilene. She married Ernest Thompson (Pete) Williams on Oct. 25, 1934, in Marfa where they made their home throughout their life. She was a homemaker, a charter member and first president of the Century Culture Club and long-time pianist for the Men's Bible Class at the Methodist church. She was a bookkeeper/secretary of Marfa Motor Sales prior to her employment at Butane Gas Sales and Marfa TV Cable Company, where she worked for many years.
She is survived by two daughters, Xanna Ehrich of Colorado Springs and Mary Ellen Hawkins of Topeka, Kan.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Kitty Monroe of Del Rio and Joan Webb of Marfa; seven nieces; and four nephews.
Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, their infant daughter, Ernestine, in 1939, and her brother, James H. Cass, DVM.
Garza
Antonio Garza, 79, went to be with our Lord on Monday, Dec. 13, 2004.
Rosary was recited on Wednesday, Dec. 15 at the Geeslin Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday, Dec 16 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church with Father Mike Alcuino officiating. Burial followed in Holy Angels Cemetery. Funeral services were entrusted to Geeslin Funeral Home.
Mr. Garza was born on June 13, 1925, in Temple to Juan Sanchez and Elisa Santos Garza. Antonio had worked for the City of Alpine in the Water Department. He was a member of the Catholic church. Antonio was a loving father, grandfather, brother and friend who will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his daughter, Myrna Garza Salcido of Andrews; his four sons, Antonio L. Garza, Armando L. Garza, Arturo L. Garza and Alberto L. Garza, all of Alpine; his four sisters, Maria Garza Armenta of Livingston, Calif., Julia Garza Martinez of San Benito, Bernardina Garza De La Rosa of Chico, Calif., and Celia Garza of Orlando, Calif.; his three brothers, Thomas Santos Garza of Corpus Christi, Juan Santos Garza of Laredo, and Luis Santos Garza of Casa Grande, Ariz;. 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jose Santos Garza.
Serving as pallbearers were Walter Garza, Dustin Garza, Aaron Garza, David Salcido, Jesse Salcido, Kevin Garza, Joe Garza, Chris Garza and Saul Garza.
Herrera
Luz Herrera, of Marfa, passed away Tuesday, Dec 14, 2004 in a Midland hospital.
Rosary service was held Thursday, Dec. 16 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, Dec 17 at the church with Father Rick Ruiz officiating. Burial followed at Merced Cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home of Marfa was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Herrera was born Aug 10, 1937, in Marfa to Bartolo and Coneha Villanueva. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ventura Herrera of Marfa; four daughters, Conchita Vasquez, Nora Lujan and Sara Ontiveroz of Marfa, and Corina Herrera of Odessa; four sons, Benny Herrera and Joe Herrera of Odessa, Ernest Herrera of Alice and Rudy Herrera of Alpine; four sisters, Adelia Fuentez, Paz Jurado and Rosa Maria Baeza of Marfa, and Maria de Rosario Hernandez of El Paso; four brothers, Raynaldo Villanueva and Chale Villanueva of El Paso and Richard Viallanueva and Urbano Villanueva of Marfa; 20 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Webb
William H "Bill" Webb, 74, passed away Sunday, Dec. 19, 2005, in a Temple area hospital.
Funeral services were held Dec. 22 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Bob Kelley officiating. Burial followed at Marfa City Cemetery. Funeral services were entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home of Marfa.
Mr. Webb was born on April 9, 1930, in Baird to Samuel Edmand and Stella South Webb. Bill attended high school in Clyde before leaving school to work as an auto mechanic for 45 years. He was a member of the Methodist church, and on May 14, 1950, he was wed to Joan W. Cass. Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend who will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Joan Webb of Marfa; his daughters, Beverly N. Beck and her husband Charles of El Paso, Shelley Lewis and her husband Ronnie of Marfa, Mary Joan Webb and Joe Morales of Marfa and Linda G. Jurado and her husband Danny of Marfa; his sisters, Amy Jacques, Martie Batley, Irma Canada and Betty Farmer; his brothers, Gerald Webb, Brit Webb, Joe Webb and Charlie Webb; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were his grandsons, James Lewis, Brice Beck and Wyatt Beck; and sons-in-law, Charles Beck, Ron Lewis and Danny Jurado.
Honorary pallbearers were Joe Morales, Polo Sotelo, Pete Chavez, Willie Hernandez, Lance Webb, Aaron Webb, Dub Polson, Pancho Borunda, Bobby Donaldson, Johnny Farmer, George Lowry and Tommy D. Wood.
Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the Ronald McDonald House of Temple.
