Rev. Daniel Hershell Ramsey
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5,6
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Daniel Hershell Ramsey passed away July 20, 2004, surrounded by his family. He was born in Stockman, Texas on Feb. 10, 1919, at home on the family farm. Hershell was the ninth of 10 children born to Daniel Watkins and Neppie Lenora Childs Ramsey.
He attended Stockman Elementary School and graduated from Timpson High School. He attended the College of Marshall, now East Texas Baptist University, and earned bachelor’s and master's degrees from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College. At Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, he earned a degree in Divinity of the Methodist Church.
Hershell met and fell in love with Fay Jones while they taught together at Silas. They were married on Dec. 20, 1941. Hershell was inducted into the U.S. Air Force in 1942 and was stationed at Hennings Air Force Base near London, England, where it was his honor to serve the United States Air Force for the duration of World War II.
Following Hershell's discharge from the Air Force, he and Fay resumed their teaching careers in Apple Springs, where Hershell served as superintendent and Fay taught first grade. The Ramseys moved to Garrison in 1949, where Hershell served as superintendent and high school principal until his retirement in 1984. Following his retirement, he was ordained as a Methodist minister; he was the pastor of churches in Burke, Caledonia, Short and Joaquin. His pastorate at Joaquin United Methodist Church was celebrated by the construction of the Hershell and Fay Ramsey Fellowship Hall, which continues to serve the people of that congregation. He was a member and past president of the Garrison Lions Club, chair of many church committees and held multiple leadership roles in church and community organizations throughout East Texas.
Hershell loved his family, his friends, his church and his farm. One of his greatest joys was spending time at his farm in Stockman. He was a man of special gifts; he was an encourager, a listener, a friend. He had a unique ability to make a person feel affirmed, special and loved. He often said that being a loving husband, dad and granddad was of utmost importance to him; he was most successful at this. He loved music; playing his guitar and singing in the Methodist church choir, and singing with his family brought much joy. He was a loving son and brother, a favorite uncle, a caring teacher, a compassionate confidante, a dependable friend and a delightful companion. He lived his Christian faith — every day.
His beloved wife of 62 years, Fay Jones Ramsey, his loving daughter, Danny, her husband Jim Robinson, his beloved grandson, Brad Ballard and wife Kristy and great-grandson Braden survive him. He is also survived by his brother Robert Ramsey and sister-in-law, Rita, his sister Marcelle Cobb and many, many, loving nieces and nephews. His brother Ernest, J.P. and Ross and sisters Sadie, Eunice, Lois and Anna Belle preceded him in death.
Hershell leaves a rich legacy of service to God, family and community, and he will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contribution to a Hershell Ramsey Scholarship at Bancorp South in Garrison or a memorial to the Garrison Methodist Church.
A Celebration of His Life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 23, at the Garrison First United Methodist church. The Rev. Walt Roberts, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Garrison, will officiate. Speakers will be T.D. Franks, Darrell Hancock and Mike Schneider. Pallbearers will be Brad Ballard, grandson; nephews: Tim Cobb, Brant Cobb, Bob Ramsey, James Ramsey, Bryon Franks, Jerry Ramsey and Truman Franks. Internment will be at Shady Grove Cemetery in Shelby County. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Garrison Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
