Eleazar Charles Maciel, 86
Died: Monday, January 2, 2012, in Abilene, Texas
Eleazar "Charles" Maciel, 86, passed away January 2, 2012 with his family by his side in Abilene, Texas.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 5, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 6, at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church with the family officiating the service. Burial will follow at Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, Texas.
Charles was born in Tucumcari, New Mexico to Manuel and Bacilia Maciel on December 11, 1925. He married Elva Josephine Castillo on August 24, 1952 in Waco, Texas. He graduated from Baylor University and later earned a Master's Degree in Education from Eastern New Mexico University. Charles taught public school in Tucumcari for thirty-two years before retiring and pursuing ministry full time.
He served as pastor of churches in Tucumcari and Corpus Christi before becoming the pastor of Iglesia Bautista Ambler also known as Ambler Baptist Church, where he faithfully served for twenty-seven years.
He was a veteran of WWII and served in the United States Army. Charles was awarded a combat infantry badge, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, signifying being wounded in combat.
Charles was on the board of regents at Baylor University, and was a trustee at Hendrick Medical Center. He was also a moderator of the Abilene Baptist Association, a board member for Mental Health Mental Retardation and a member of the advisory committee for Adult Protective Services. Charles was awarded "Pastor of the Year" for 2011 by the Abilene Baptist Association.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Charles is survived by his wife Elva, son Charlie Maciel Jr. and wife Norrie, daughter Toni Jo Adams and husband Mike Adams, son Rene Maciel and wife Sabrina, daughter Annette Maciel Sadler. Charles is survived by his brother David Maciel and wife Juanita, sister Belen Garza, and sister Eleanor Garcia. He is also survived by grandchildren Meghann Whitaker and husband Brad, Whitney Porras and husband Bobby, Nathan Adams and wife Meredith, Britini Adams, Ashlee Sadler, Raleigh Sadler, Brianna Maciel and Carmen Maciel as well as great-grandchildren Corinne and Blaize Whitaker.
Pallbearers will be Mike Adams, Raleigh Sadler, Nathan Adams, Bobby Porras, Brad Whitaker and Andrew Clouser.
Memorials may be given to the Baptist University of the Americas, 8019 S. Pan Am Expressway San Antonio, Texas 78224. The family of Charles Maciel wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses and the dialysis staff of Hendrick Medical Center.
George Curtiss King, 84

George Curtiss King, 84, of Abilene, passed away Monday, October 17, 2011.
The son of Blanche (Turner) and George Harvey King, George was born on September 23, 1927 in Carbon, Texas in Eastland County, and graduated from Eastland High School. In 1996, he moved from Winters, Texas to Abilene. Mr. King was a builder and an investor. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Browning King, in 2008; daughter, Barbara Nell Spencer; granddaughter, Melissa Ann Johnson; and parents, George and Blanche King.
George is survived by his son, Keith Craig of Abilene; grandson, Christopher Craig; and great-grandson, Chris Craig.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 21, in Lakeview Cemetery in Winters directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Sharon Marie Winn, 62
Died: Sunday, October 09, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Sharon Marie Winn, 62, died Sunday, October 9, 2011, at her residence in Abilene.
The daughter of Glenda (Van Zandt) and James Clinton Winn, Sharon was born on August 23, 1949 in Abilene, Texas. She graduated from Wylie High School in the Class of 1967. Sharon had worked at Buffalo Gap Steak House where she made onion rings and salads. She also worked for Bruce Snellgrove at Furr's Cafeteria as a hostess. She was a member of Bible Chapel in Abilene.
Sharon was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather, Glenda and Bill Graham.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 13, 2011, at Bible Chapel, 2549 N. Danville, with Pastor Don Woods officiating and W. L. Massey assisting. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.

George John Kappel, 81
Died: Monday, August 29, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
George John Kappel, 81, of Kansas City, Missouri, died Monday, August 29, 2011 in Abilene, Texas.
The son of Julianna Laschitz and George Paul Kappel, George was born on November 24, 1929. Following graduation from high school, he immediately began his military service in the U. S. Marine Corps, serving in the Korean Conflict as a radio operator. He worked for many years as a diesel mechanic for various companies during his career. He was a member of the Catholic Church.
George was a loving father and grandfather, and a devoted husband, faithfully caring for his wife of 49 years, Barbara, thoughout her longtime illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Pruitt Kappel, in 2000; one son, Steven Craig Kappel in 2008; and his parents.
George is survived by his son, Mark Kappel and wife Jana of Abilene; sister, Mary Worland of Kansas City, Missouri; and four grandchildren, Christian, Kara, Colin and Steven.
Arrangements are being made by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas.

Thelma Clemmer Brady Hall, 95

Thelma Clemmer Brady Hall, 95, died Thursday, August 18, 2011, at Clyde Nursing Center.
The daughter of Bessie Pearl (Moore) and Henry Ellis Clemmer, she was born on November 1, 1915 in Hamby, Texas. She attended school at Rock Hill and graduated from Cisco High School.
In 1928 at the age of twelve, she was baptized in Dead Man Creek. Thelma was a life long member of Hamby Baptist Church and in more recent years enjoyed being a part of the "Keen Agers" at the church.
Thelma and her first husband, Ernest S. Brady, lived in the Hamby Community and for a time in Merkel. Mr. Brady preceded her in death in 1968. Mr. Brady was a farmer, and Thelma was also a product of the land. She loved watching the crops grow, and tending her garden and flowers around her home.
In 1977, she married J. D. Hall. Mr. Hall also preceded her in death, in 1995. They were residents of Hamby.
Throughout her life, Thelma loved to crochet and work outdoors. She was a talented artist and a great cook. She especially loved tending to her irises at her house in Hamby, and she loved to play dominoes.
In addition to her husbands, Thelma was preceded in death by infant twin daughters; her parents, three sisters and two brothers.
Thelma is survived by her son, Ed Brady and wife Mary Ann of Hamby; daughter, Barbara Sutton and husband Ronnie of Granbury; and stepson, Cliff "Pete" Hall of Downey, California. Survivors also include four grandchildren and spouses, Zach Brady and Dani, Amber Brady, Seth Sutton and Meredith, and Gabe Sutton and Lizzie; and eight great-grandchildren, James, Emma, Isaac, Noah, Asa, Jonah, Caleb and Eli, as well as numerous nieces and nephews including Betty Brady of Hamby, Texas. In recent years, Betty was Thelma's "Sunday driver", taking her to church, lunch, and other destinations. Betty has been a huge help to Thelma and Eddie and Barbara for years in ways too numerous to mention.
Thelma's life will be remembered and celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 21, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, with grandchildren officiating. Burial will follow in Hamby Cemetery.

Vernoghn Strole, 77
Died: Tuesday, July 26, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Vernoghn Strole, 77, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Born in Abilene, Texas on January 28, 1934, Vernoghn was the daughter of W. G. and Emma Carpenter. She was a 1952 graduate of Abilene High School and attended Abilene Christian University. She also completed real estate training, and was previously employed by Senter Realtors. Vernoghn was a member of Highland Church of Christ.
Mrs. Strole was preceded in death in 2002 by her husband, Donald G. Strole, M.D., and by her parents.
Vernoghn was a woman of generosity and integrity who always recognized and appreciated the many blessings in her life. She was much loved by her family, friends and her beloved dog and companion, Tinka.
Survivors include her two daughters, Melia Randolph and husband Mack of San Antonio, and Lori Wood and husband Keith of Carrollton, Texas, and five grandchildren. Survivors also include a brother, Jimmy Carpenter and wife Mary of Edmond, OK; sister, Sandy Meyer and husband Buddy of Abilene; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 28, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Graveside services will be private.
