Died: Wednesday, September 21, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Melita D'Lynn Warmbold, age 3, of Abilene died Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at an Abilene medical center. The daughter of Lita Lynne (Brewer) and Christopher Dale Warmbold, Melita was born on September 3, 2008 in Abilene, Texas. She attended All God's Children Child Development Center at Zion Lutheran Church.

Melita is survived by her parents, Lita and Christopher Warmbold of Abilene; grandparents, George and Olita Racicot of Clyde, Texas, Dale and Mary Warmbold of Nashwauk, Minnesota, Donna Lindstrom of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Dennis and Deb Brewer of Shreveport, Louisiana; two uncles, Jed Lindstrom and Erica and Hans Lindstrom and Melissa; and numerous other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. The funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, September 26, at Zion Lutheran Church in Abilene with Rev. David Cason officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church for All God's Children Child Development Center, 2801 Antilley Rd., Abilene, TX 79606-5105.

Ora Gertrude Vanderhider, 97
Died: Monday, September 19, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Ora Gertrude Vanderhider, 97, of Abilene, passed away Monday, September 19, 2011. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 22, 2011 in the Fairlawn Cemetery in Liberty, Texas; directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Gertrude was born January 17, 1914 in Bryan, Texas. She was one of twelve children in her family; only one brother, Pete Reed, survives her. She moved to Abilene from Liberty, Texas in 1994. Gertrude was a member of the First Baptist Church in Liberty.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Hubert Vanderhider; one son, James Alan Vanderhider; one grandson, Carl Jeffrey Vanderhider and 10 siblings.

Gertrude is survived by one son, Carl Vanderhider and wife Cherrie of Abilene; one daughter-in-law, Kathy Vanderhider of Lake Jackson; one brother, Pete Reed, also of Lake Jackson; three grandchildren, Russell Ann Wilson, Alexandra Vanderhider and Zachery Vanderhider; three great-grandchildren, Cassia, Alizah and Heston Wilson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to Gideon's International, P.O. Box 7361, Abilene, TX 79608.

Vera Mae (Baugh) Coe, 82
Died: Tuesday, August 2, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Vera Mae (Baugh) Coe died Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at a local nursing home. She was 82 years old. A graveside service will be held Friday, August 5, at 12:30 p.m. in the Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories, with the Rev. Brett W. Coe officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Vera was born on December 26, 1928 in Etowah County, Alabama, to the late Andrew and Balmer Baugh. A resident of Texas for most of her life, she worked for American Optical in Dallas until her retirement. She loved her friends, her dogs, and coffee, but above all else, she adored her family and loved them without condition.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; William Coe, the father of her children; one son, Michael Coe; two brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Mashburn and husband Lloyd of Clyde; one son, Larry Coe and wife Paula of Abilene; eight grandchildren, Rhonda Mashburn of Fort Worth; Madonna Mashburn and Lara Gillian of Long Beach, CA; Kevin Coe and wife Becky of Mansfield; Brett Coe and wife Julie of Wichita Falls; Julie Coe and Greg Hernandez of Red Oak; Laura Ruybal and husband Chris of Abilene; Melissa Allen and husband Clint of Sweetwater; Paloma Coe of Purdon; 14 great grandchildren, Kobe and Khloe Mashburn-Gillian of Long Beach, CA; Deanna, Keaton, and Megan Coe of Mansfield; McKeylee Smart, Rylan and Brydan Hernandez of Red Oak; Lisette Truitt Coe of Kirtland, NM, Blake and Kimy Coe of Wichita Falls; Christopher Ruybal of Abilene; Christyn and Caden Allen of Sweetwater; and one great great grandchild, Melanie Olsen of Albuquerque, NM.

Jim Poor, 64
Died: Thursday, June 16, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Jim Poor, 64, of Hodges died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at an Abilene medical center.

Born in Abilene, Texas on May 29, 1947, Jim was the son of Janet and J. L. Poor. After graduating from Cooper High School in 1967, he attended Cisco Junior College for a short time. Jim served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. After his return home from military service, Jim made a living making and selling guns. He was also a very good all-round mechanic and fabricator, but most recently dealt in and worked on motorcycles.

Jim also enjoyed hunting, clay shooting and riding motocycles. He was reared in the Caps United Methodist Church and more recently attended The Cowboy Church in Abilene.

He loved his daughter Callie above and beyond, and was a loyal and loving son and brother. He was preceded in death by his mother, Janet Poor on March 22, 2011.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Callie Jeanette Shelton and husband Zach of Abilene; father, J. L. Poor of Hodges; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Libby Poor of Abilene; sister, Pamela Phillips of Abilene; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 18, in the chapel at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene with Pastor Robert Winters officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Sammy Edwin "PawPaw" Albro, 69
Died: Sunday, May 29, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Sam Albro, 69, of Abilene, was born September 9, 1941 to Slim and Rosalie (Berryman) Albro in Winters, Texas. He graduated from Winters High School in 1960, attended Texas Tech University, and was a butcher for Safeway grocery stores for over 30 years, during which time he amassed countless life-long friends. Sam has been a resident of Abilene for over 45 years and married Shirley Patrick Bruton on September 10, 1981. Sam enjoyed huntin, fishing, golf and high school sports, but his greatest passion in life was his three grandchildren. Sam "Paw Paw" dearly loved them and would boast and tell stories about them to anyone lending an ear. Sam will always be remembered by all as a wonderful story teller, his great sense of humor, and his passion for life in general. Sam would always make personal sacrifices to assist others in need, and was always there for his family and friends. He will be forever missed and never replaced!

Sam fought a courageous battle against multiple health issues, and ultimately died Sunday, May 29, 2011 at a local hospital. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Joe Frank Albro. Sam is survived by his wife, Shirley Albro of Abilene; two step-sons, Dr.'s Patrick Bruton and his wife Shelley, and Don Bruton, all of Abilene, three grandchildren, Annabel Bruton, Connor "Little Big Man" Bruton, and Lauren Bruton; as well as numerous other family and friends.

Memorials may be made in Sam's honor to The Shriners Children Hospital.

Merrel F. Nichols, 77
Died: Friday, February 24, 2012, in Abilene, Texas
Merrel F. Nichols, 77, died Friday, February 24, 2012, at an Abilene medical center.

The son of Alma Elizabeth (Roberts) and Ernest Willie Nichols, Merrel was born on December 12, 1934 in Early County, Georgia. He graduated from Morgan High School in Morgan, Georga in 1954, and graduated from Cisco Junior College with an Associate Degree in Applied Science. He married Julia (Judy) Eubanks on October 24, 1959, in Leary, Georgia.

Merrel was a U. S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, retiring after a 23-year career in the USAF with the rank of Tech Sergeant. Since July of 1972, he had been a resident of Abilene, Texas. He worked for the City of Abilene Animal Control for 14 years (1987-2002).

He was a member of Abilene Primitive Baptist Church. Merrel was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 6873, the Sergeants Association, and Good Sams R.V. Club, Wildcats Chapter, and a charter member of the Rainbow Travelers. He was also a volunteer who sold tickets at the West Texas Fair and Rodeo.

His parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Merrel is survived by his wife, Judy Nichols of Abilene; son, Merrel F. Nichols, Jr. and wife Kimlyn of Bedford, Texas; daughter, Julia D. Seim and husband Bruce of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Stacy, Stephanie, Josh, Heather and Michael; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, with Chaplain Charlie Bowen, V.F.W. and Col. Gordon Atkison, USAF (Ret.) officiating. Interment will follow in Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Carolyn Ann Canon, 75
Died: Thursday, January 26, 2012, in Abilene, Texas
Carolyn Ann Canon, 75, sailed from this earthbound ship into the next ocean blue on January 26, 2012. Thanks to the involvement of hospice, she was able to make this journey in the comfort of her own home surrounded and cared for by those she loved.

A memorial service to celebrate Ann's life will be held on Saturday, January 28th at 2:00 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Reverend Steve Brooks and Reverend Amy Feltz officiating, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. A private burial will follow at Texas State Veterans Cemetery.

Ann was born on October 15, 1936 in Henryetta, OK to Grace and Clarence Alfred Riser. During her high school years, she was selected because of her outstanding performance to be an exchange student to Germany. This experience allowed her to broaden her outlook beyond a small town setting as well as form lasting relationships with her German host family. After graduating from Henryetta High School, she attended Oklahoma University graduating with a degree in journalism. In her mid-thirties, Ann returned to college to earn an education degree at Abilene Christian University and, later, completed a master's degree in Library Science at North Texas University in Denton, TX. Ann taught elementary school, and, later, became a Library Specialist with the Abilene Independent School District at Dyess, Austin, Jane Long and Bonham Elementary schools. She retired from the AISD in 1995. Ann was very fond of her many students and took great joy in hearing where their lives had led as they continued their education and careers.

On June 14, 1958, Ann married Dave Canon and began the mobile life of an Air Force officer's wife. During their travels, two daughters were born, Beth and Karen. In 1969, the family was stationed at Dyess AFB. Throughout her life, Ann was very active at Aldersgate United Methodist Church giving freely of her time and talents. Her faith and strong Christian values were a source of inspiration to her family and friends. Ann loved people and was genuinely interested in others. In return, everyone loved Ann. Her community involvements included her Alpha Delta Gamma Sorority, Abilene Retired Teachers Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters (with little sis, Milesha Reed), YMCA of Abilene, Friends of the Library, Aggie Moms (& Grandmoms), and Master Gardeners. The loves of Ann's life were her 10 grandchildren. She reveled in her grandmotherly role doing her utmost to be involved in their lives and be supportive of their activities and goals.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents. Ann is survived by her husband, Dave Canon of Abilene; two daughters, Beth Nottingham and husband, Mike, of Omaha, NE and Karen Light and husband, Joey, of Abilene; 10 grandchildren, Jordan Light, Cameron Light, Joshua Light, Christian Light, Josiah Light, Terry Light, Blaine Thompson, Kyle Thompson, Tristan Nottingham and Cheyenne Nottingham; her brother, Dr. C.A. Riser and wife, Kathy; her sisters, Pat Riser McCoy and Lyn Riser Wyatt and husband, Norman. She is also survived by 2 nieces, 3 nephews and many loving friends.

The family would like to express their special thanks to Dr. Hirsch and the staffs of both Hendrick Cancer Center and Hendrick Hospice Care.

Memorials may be made in honor of Ann to the Hendrick Cancer Center, 1900 Pine Street, Abilene, TX 79601; Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory Street, Abilene, TX 79601; or the charity of your choice.
