Dorothy Webb Watson, 90, of Abilene died Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at a local medical center.
Born in Roaring Springs, Texas on October 29, 1920, she was the daughter of Annie Bert (Marshall) and Stacey Marvin Webb. Dorothy was a homemaker and a farmer in Roaring Springs before moving to Cisco, Texas. She lived in Cisco ten years before relocating to Abilene five years ago. She was a member of Crossway Baptist Church in Abilene.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Frasier Watson in 1997; a son, Stacey Watson; her parents and two brothers, Frank Webb and Troy Webb.
Mrs. Watson is survived by her daughter, Retha Ann Smith of Abilene; sister, Margie Morgan of Muleshoe, Texas; four grandchildren, Anthony Watson of Abilene, Missy Spears of Cisco, Cindy Bridges of Tuscola, and Stacey Morrison of Gun Barrel City, Texas; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 29, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, with Oran Rake officiating. A graveside service will follow on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Roaring Springs Cemetery in Roaring Springs, Motley County, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Scott Bridges, Don Bridges, Charles Thomason, Bradley Thomason, Brandon Thomason, and Anthony Watson.

Sylvia Beatrice "Bea" Atwood, 84

Sylvia Beatrice "Bea" Atwood, 84, died Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at her residence in Abilene, Texas.
The daughter of William Benjamin and Pollie (Smith) Cross, she was born on February 13, 1927 in Graham, Oklahoma, and grew up and attended school in Carter County, Oklahoma. She married John W. "Jake" Atwood on December 23, 1948 in Carrizozo, New Mexico. In 1948 they moved from Levelland, Texas to Abilene. Bea was a homemaker and a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Atwood, on May 14, 1988; parents; four sisters, Virgie Mae Cross, Laura Wilson, Wanda Smith and Mary Sue Farris; and brother, Gene Cross.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Dennis Bartley of Bastrop, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Sherrie Atwood of Midland; two sisters and their husbands, Mattie Compton and Don, and Peggy Knutson and Steve, all of Hamlin; a brother, Hershel Cross and wife LaDonna of Carlsbad, Texas; three grandchildren, Jake Atwood of Bastrop, Cathy Coon of Round Rock, Texas, and Cory Coon of Midland; one great-grandson, Cody Coon; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 23, in The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, with Chaplain Chris Hale officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Jake Atwood, Cory Coon, Cody Coon, Zach Brown, Ben Cross, Karl Smith and Kerry Smith.

Michael A. Lawrence, 59
Died: Monday, June 27, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Michael A. Lawrence, 59, of Abilene, passed away Monday, June 27, 2011 at sunrise, with his wife Bess, by his side.
Mike was born June 12, 1952 to Gladys (Buske) and David Lawrence in Abilene, Texas. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1970 and Abilene Christian College (now ACU) in 1974. The summer of 1973 he went to work for Pete McKee, Bess's father. At Pete's encouragement and pushing they met and fell in love. Mike married Bess Marie McKee June 30, 1975 at Elmwood West United Methodist Church in Abilene. They were soon to celebrate their 36th anniversary.
Mike worked as a Machinist for 23 years for NADEP in North Carolina and because of failing health retired early, moving back to Texas.
He loved his church in Morehead City, North Carolina and when the doors were open Mike and Bess were there.
His family includes his wife, Bess of Abilene; his in-laws, Annabet Vestal and James Vestal of North Carolina, Juanita and Jim Harrington of Canada, Laura and Jim Weber of Abilene, Pleas Jr. and Debbie McKee of Campbell, Texas, Mike Forrester of Abilene and Joe Frank and Kelly McKee of North Carolina; his brother, Larry Lawrence and wife Betty of Houston; 12 nieces and nephews, as well as numerous cousins and hundreds of friends.
Funeral services, with Tim Channell officiating, will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Burial will follow at Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kevin McSherry, Jonathan Gibbs, Chris Knapp, James Vestal, Jim Harrington and Tyler Channell.

Mike was a Christian man, never passing judgment, and loved his friends. Everyone was a friend to Mike. He was a gentle man and a gentleman. He was soft spoken, never a harsh word, and was the first to lend a hand. We will miss him.

Jim Ferguson, 67, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at an Abilene medical center.
Born in Plainview, Texas on September 17, 1943, Jim was the son of Glenda (Martine) and John Ferguson. He married Sandy Gallaway on July 20, 1962 in Plainview.
In January 1989, Jim moved from Lake Dallas, Texas to Abilene, where he was the owner of Crown Carpet Distributors. He was a member of Broadview Baptist Church in Abilene.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sandy Ferguson of Abilene; son, Jayson Ferguson of Missoula, Montana; daughter, Kayla Cook and husband Glenn of Abilene; sister, Fran Wilson of McKinney; grandson, Keenan Cook; granddaughters, Brittany Cook Young, Tana Cook and Tamara Cook; and great-granddaughter, Kinsley Young.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 6, at Broadview Baptist Church with Rev. David Cason officiating, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

William D. Beard, 86
Died: Wednesday, August 3, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
William D. Beard, 86, of Abilene, entered into the hands of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 3rd. He was born in Mansfield, Texas, on November 23, 1924. Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 6th, at Zion Lutheran Church in Abilene at 2801 Antilley Road, under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home with Pastor Clyde Kieschnick officiating. Entombment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park Mausoleum. Family members will accept friends on Friday evening between 6:30 and 8:30 pm at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
A longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church, he loved his family and many friends and took great pleasure in their company. He enjoyed traveling, playing dominoes, helping build the new church facility on Antilley Road and "piddling around", working, and fishing at his ranch in Buffalo Gap.
William served his country in Alaska as a member of the United States Army and United States Air Force during World War II. During leave, he traveled to Canada where he met the love of his life and future wife, Ella. After the war, he became a meat grader with the United States Department of Agriculture and was assigned to the Swift and Armor plants in the Ft. Worth stock yards. He worked there for 20 years until both facilities were closed. He was then transferred to plants in Abilene and Sweetwater where he served for 18 years until his retirement in 1989.
Known to his family and friends as Daddy, Pop, Bill, Dee, W.D. and Sweet William, he leaves behind countless family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Stacey Beard; a brother, Curtis; and two sisters, Cleo Sweeden and Faye Saylor. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ella; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Elena Beard of Fredericksburg, VA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and John Webb of Granbury and Danny and Linda Stribling of College Station; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Mackey Beard, Bob and Pat Beard, and Don and Bettye Beard; a sister, Geneva Hammon; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Roland Ziehr, Vernon Youngquist, Wayne Lanham, John Glenewinkel, Clarence Siewert, Ricky Law, and Alvin Siewert. Larry Letz will be a honorary pallbearer.
The family would like to recognize with special thanks the nurses and doctors of both Hendrick Hospice Care and Coronado Nursing Center for their kindness and care.

Dr. William Ruck "Dub" Sibley, Jr., 90
Died: Thursday, September 29, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Dr. William Ruck "Dub" Sibley, Jr. was born May 16, 1921 in Abilene, Texas. He was the son of "Ruck" Sibley, former Chief of Police of Abilene, and Mollie Mead of Abilene. He had two sisters, Melba and Alma Jean, both deceased. Dr. Sibley died Thursday, September 29, 2011 in Abilene.
Dub attended schools in Abilene, graduating from Abilene High School in 1939. In 1939, he left Abilene to attend Texas A&M.; While at Texas A&M;, Dr. Sibley was in the Field Artillery and was Battalion Commander. He played varsity football for Texas A&M; in 1940, '41 and '42. In 1941, Dub was selected All-Southwest Conference center and set a NCAA record of 10 pass interceptions by a linebacker, a record that stands today. In 1942, Dub was selected as center on Grantland Rice's All-American team. He received a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1942.
When Dr. Sibley graduated from A&M;, he was given a regular commission in the Marine Corp. He served during World War II with the 3rd Marine Division on Guam. After participating in the Iwo Jima Battle, he returned to Guam until the war was over.
Although offered contracts to play pro ball with the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears, Dub chose to return to Texas to attended medical school. He attended the University of Houston while waiting to begin medical school. He graduated in 1950 with honors from Baylor University College of Medicine, and was a charter member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the highest honor in medical school. He did a general rotating internship at Brook Army Hospital in San Antonio, graduating #1 in his class, and did a preceptorship in general surgery with Dr. J. W. Nixon.
After completing his military and educational life, he returned to his hometown, Abilene, in May of 1952 to be a "country doctor." Dub started a solo practice in General Practice. His office was with the doctor who delivered him. Dub was active in the Taylor-Jones County Medical Society (President in the mid-60s), the American Medical Association and Texas Academy of General Practice. He was president of the Family Practice group; he served on the State of Texas Board of General Practice; and he helped start the continuing education program, which has spread to all specialties of medicine. Dr. Sibley continued to practice medicine, affiliated with both Hendrick and Humana Hospitals, retiring in March of 2000 after 50 years of fulfilling his dream - "being an excellent family doctor." Dr. Sibley was a nutritional expert, a believer in preventive medicine, a humanitarian,
Dub was the team doctor for Abilene High School during the 1950s when Chuck Moser coached three state championship teams. During this time, Dub was a charter member of Abilene's Council on Alcoholism. He was a 32nd Mason in the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner. He helped start the West Texas Rehabilitation Center and was a charter member of the Board of Directors. He was very active in Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal, serving as senior warden and helping start a second Episcopal church in Abilene. He was an Eagle Scout and an avid golfer,
Dub married Sonoma Kathryn Rudman in July 1943 in Breckinridge, Texas. He was the father of two daughters and a son, the grandfather of three grandsons and two granddaughters and four great grandchildren.
Dr. Sibley is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sonoma Kathryn Rudman, and his three children: Sharron Ann Sibley and husband, Gerald Grant Jr., of Fort Worth; Cindy Lou Sibley of Austin; and William Ruck (Trey) Sibley III and wife, Sheila, of Dallas. Survivors also include five grandchildren: William Marion (King) Pugh and wife, Stacy, of Midlothian, TX; Charles Kyle Pugh and fiancée, Ms. Deborah Michaels of Dallas; Hayley Sayles Pannone of Austin; Heather Michelle Hayward and husband, Daniel Hayward, of Frisco, TX; and Jordan Matthew Sibley of Dallas; and four great grandchildren: William Ryan Pugh and Kathryn Lynn Pugh of Midlothian, TX; Sadie Pearl Pannone of Austin; and Mason Scott Hayward of Frisco, TX. Dub is also survived by his father's brother's (Pee Wee Sibley) daughter, Martha Sibley Spence and husband, John, of Dallas.
Dr. Sibley's grandsons will be pallbearers at his funeral service to be held Monday, October 3, at Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal at 11 a.m. officiated by The Rev. N. Luke Back, Rector. The burial will follow in the family plot in Buffalo Gap Cemetery in Buffalo Gap, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
