Richard Floyd McKissick, 80, of Abilene passed peacefully on December 18, 2011 in Abilene.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 pm on Monday, December 19, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, December 20th at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Reid of Pioneer Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow a graveside service at Restland Funeral Home in Dallas on Wednesday, December 21st at 11:00 am.
Richard was born in Wheatland, Texas to William David and Ethel Dora McKissick on May 24, 1931. He attended school in Wheatland and graduated from Duncanville High School. He married Bobbie Jean Starrett on January 19, 1951. He began his career with Sun Oil Company in 1951 and retired after 37 years of service as District Land Manager in Abilene.
Richard served in the Navy from 1954-1958 as an Aviation Machinist Mate at the US Naval Air Station in Dallas, Texas.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers (William David McKissick, Jr, Raymond McKissick and Robert McKissick) and his wife Bobbie Jean McKissick.
He is survived by his children Sherron Olson, Pamela Tayloe and husband Steve, Mike McKissick and wife Kat, and Vicki Hollabaugh and husband Sirman, one brother Don McKissick and his wife Deb, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and close companion Bobbie Edwards.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Anton Melnyk and his caring staff at Texas Oncology and to the compassionate staff and nurses on the 4th and 5th floors of Abilene Regional Hospital.
James Francis House, Jr., 62
Died: Tuesday, November 29, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
James Francis House, Jr., 62, of Abilene died Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at an Abilene medical center.
Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on September 19, 1949, James was the son of Beulah (Kitchens) and the late James Francis House, Sr., and moved to Abilene as a teenager. He was a decorated U. S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War receiving a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service. Most of his life was lived in Abilene where he was a security officer for Brinks Security when he retired. Jim loved the outdoors and spending time with his family and close friends.
James is survived by his son, David House and wife Kristen of Houston; daughter, Jamie House Freels of Houston; and five grandchildren, Haleigh House, Hunter House, Tyler Freels, Hannah Freels and Kahlan Freels. Survivors also include his mother, Beulah House of Fort Worth, one half brother, Charles Burgamy of Austin; and the mother of his children, Judy Easterling of Conroe, Texas.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 2, at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene with Rev. David Hancock officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
Pallbearers will be David House, Cody Breland, Darrell Breland, Chuck Connally, Dan Smith, Cody Morrow, Jim Hargett and Phil Martin.
Memorial contributions in James's honor may be made to American Heart Association.
Mildred West Winter, 94
Died: Wednesday, November 23, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas
Mildred West Winter, 94, died Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at her daughter's home in San Antonio, TX after a long battle with cancer.
She was born on November 2, 1917, at the Stith homeplace in Jones County. Her parents were M. E. West and Ollie Miller West.
Mildred married Norman C. Winter on July 17, 1939, at the Leuders Baptist Encampment. They lived all of their life together in the Big Country area.
She attended the elementary school at Stith, TX; and in her later years, she and several Stith "girls" in their late eighties met for lunch monthly in Abilene to share stories about their earlier years together. Often they were joined by a few of the Stith "boys."
She graduated from Hardin Simmons College. She studied voice and piano under Dr. Edwin Young and Thurman Morrison. She earned money to help pay for her education when she accompanied vocal and instrumental students in their recitals. She was a member of the Hardin Simmons Cowgirls club.
After graduation from college, Mildred taught school in Noodle, Texas, Tuscola, Texas and Merkel Texas for thirty-seven years. Most of those years she taught eighth grade mathematics and English along with music. She loved young people this age, and often said they were a joy to teach.
For many years she played the organ at the First Baptist Church in Merkel, Texas. Also, she played the piano or organ for many weddings and funerals in the area. She felt that her musical talent was a gift from God and would never accept any compensation.
She loved watching sporting events, especially the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, and Texas Rangers. She attended many of her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's games.
Mildred enjoyed many musical sessions with her family where she would play the piano and the family would sing gospel hymns and Christmas carols. These were some of her happiest times as she grew older.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Merkel, Texas and later University Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas. In her later years when she was physically able, she attended Cowboy Church where her son, Robert Winter, preached.
Her husband, Norman Winter, died January 15, 1979. She is survived by her children, Linda Winter Denton and Robert Harlon "Frosty" Winter. In addition, she is survived by eight grandchildren: Manley Denton, Jr., Laurie Denton Lee, J. Norman Denton, Lisa Denton, Wendee Winter Davis, Rory Winter, Rowdy Winter, and Rhett Winter and fourteen great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 P. M. Monday, November 28, 2011, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Robert Winter will officiate. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Interment following the funeral service will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Manley Denton, Jr., Norman Denton, Rory Winter, Rowdy Winter, Rhett Winter, Glen Bicknell, Jeff Lee, and Roy Hackney.

Norma Lee Mayben, 82

Norma Lee Osborn Mayben, 82, died Monday, November 21, 2011, at her residence in Abilene, Texas.
Graveside services will at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, in Muleshoe Memorial Park in Muleshoe, Texas, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.
Norma Lee Mayben was born August 27, 1929, in Clovis, NM to Jesse M. Osborn and Grace May Osborn. The family moved from Friona to Muleshoe in 1931. Mrs. Mayben received her bachelor's degree from Texas Woman's College in Denton and taught at Muleshoe. She married G. W. "Bill" Mayben on January 27, 1951 in Muleshoe. They farmed at Bovina until he joined Amoco Oil, and they lived in a number of locations including London, before moving to Houston. Mrs. Mayben moved to Abilene in 1996.
She was a member of John Wesley Methodist Church, Houston, Texas; Alibates Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists; Panhandle Colony, Magna Charta Dames; and Daniel Wing Chapter, Colonial Dames XVII Century; and other local genealogical societies.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, G.W. Mayben; her brother, Edward Marion Osborn; her daughter, Norma Sue Mayben; her son, George William Mayben; and five grandchildren- Cary Crofts Best, Josiah Best, Victoria Lee Luke, Meagan Bethel Luke, and G.W. Joseph Luke.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherri Allyson Mayben-Stockner and husband Robert Christian Stockner of Palmdale, California, and her sister, Mary Sue Osborn Coleman, Amarillo, Texas, niece, Susan Lee Coleman, Amarillo. Other survivors include six grandchildren- Darcy Jane Radcliffe and her husband, Justin of Abilene; Grace Mae Robinson and her husband, Michael of Warwick, RI; Mark Abram Best of Miami, FL; Abigail Browning Taylor of Seattle, WA; Hannah Elizabeth Best Denton and her husband, Anthony of Fredrick, MD; Sarah Golden Best of Seattle, WA, and two great grandchildren- Elaina Aubrey Robinson and Nathanael Avery Robinson of Warwick, RI.

SMSgt. James Martin Finn, Jr., USAF (Ret.), 75, died Thursday, November 10, 2011, at an Abilene medical center.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska on October 31, 1936, James was the son of Mary Ann (Caster) and James M. Finn, Sr. He graduated from high school in Rock Island, Illinois in 1956, followed by two years of college. On September 20, 1958, Velma L. Borden and James were married in Hayward, California.
James retired from the U.S. Air Force after a 20-year military career. He also retired from his second career with the U. S. Postal Service as a mail carrier. Since 1973, James had been a resident of Abilene where he was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
James is survived by his wife, Velma Finn of Abilene; three sons and their spouses, Kevin Finn and Melinda of Dallas, Brian Finn and Lisa of Burbank, CA, and Sean Finn and Paula of Charlotte, NC; and four grandchildren, Delaney Finn, Simone Finn, Bailey Finn and Sophie Finn. He is also survived by two brothers, John Finn of Charleston, SC and Edward Finn of North Hollywood, CA; a sister, Agnes Newenham and husband Harold of Rock Island, IL; and a brother-in-law, Kirby Borden and wife Sheryl of Twin Falls, Idaho
Funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, November 14, at Holy Family Catholic Church officiated by the Rev. Msgr. Fred Nawarskas. Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. in Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Visitation will be 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
