John Edward Everett
I am a Veteran.
October 13, 1947 - February 22, 2010

John Edward Everett, 62, passed away Monday, February 22, 2010 in Abilene. His wishes were to be cremated and no service is planned at this time. Arrangements are with Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South in Abilene.

John was born in Hilton, Oklahoma the son of Jim Edward Everett and Vivian Pulis Everett. He grew up in Plains, Texas. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany working as an Army Paramedic. After his military service, he worked as a police officer in Hilton, Oklahoma, lived a short time in California and has been in Sweetwater for the past 20 years. When his health would allow, John was active with the Jaycees and the Rattlesnake Round-Up. He loved kids and had a good sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Adkins Everett of Sweetwater; two children, Sonja Jean Tiffen of Ft. Smith, Arkansas and Janice Marie Everett of California; two step-children, Victoria Wells of Tye and Elizabeth Hannemen of Sweetwater; one brother, Tommy Everett of Seymour; two sisters, Doris Turner of Longview, and Janice Hembree of Seymour.

His parents and one sister, Rhonda Barnett preceded him in death.

Richard W. Duport I am a Veteran.
August 8, 1936 - February 12, 2010

Richard W. Duport, 74, passed away Friday, February 12, 2010 in Abilene. Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, February 15th at Holy Family Catholic Church, 5410 Buffalo Gap Rd with burial following in Elmwood Memorial Park. Rosary will be at 4:00 PM on Sunday in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel with visitation following from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

Mr. Duport was born on August 8, 1936 in New Bedford, Massachusetts the son of Allen Duport and Doris Allard Duport. He was proud of his military career which began with 4 years of service in the United States Marine Corp and ended with his retirement from the U.S. Air Force after 26 years and 18 days of service. When Richard retired in 1978 he had obtained the rank of Master Sergeant, and was First Sergeant in charge of the 772 Squadron stationed at Dyess Air Force Base. He was a life member of VFW Post 6873 and a member of the Masonic Lodge 559.

Mr. Duport has been famous over the last 29 years for his alias of “Santa Claus”, a role he has played no matter where he was stationed in the military. Since moving to Abilene in 1975, children of all ages have loved stopping by his house on Pioneer Drive to sit on his knee and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. All of his children and grandchildren have been enlisted as Santa’s helpers over the years and of course his wife Beatrice was always happy to play Mrs. Claus.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Beatrice Duport; his children, Barbara Lynn Dahl and husband Dr. Patrick Miller of Abilene, Maureen Scarborough and husband Bryan of Arlington, Richard E. Duport of Round Rock and Patricia Jo Shaffer and husband Michael of San Antonio; his brother, Robert Medeiros, 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Holy Family Catholic Church, 5410 Buffalo Gap RD, Abilene, TX 79606 or Hendrick Home for Children, 2758 Jeanette St, Abilene, TX 79602.

Virginia Prado Shirley
May 21, 1930 - February 11, 2010

Virginia Prado Shirley, 79, passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2010 in Abilene. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 14th at 6:00 PM with a Rosary Service beginning at 7:00 PM at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Her funeral service will be at 10:00 AM, Monday, February 15th in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Father Bush of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Virginia was born on May 21, 1930 in Brackettville, TX to Hipolito and Josephine Prado. She attended school in Sweetwater. In 1962 she married Arthur Shirley the love of her life and enjoyed 47 years of wonderful companionship. Virginia was employed by AISD as a teacher’s aid for 12 years until her retirement. She and Arthur were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed spending her time volunteering for various services and collecting dolls.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Arthur; one brother, David Prado of Grand Prairie; two sisters, Pauline Gutierrez of Lubbock, and Mary Prado of Abilene; Several nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Camilio Jose Prado and Felis Prado.

Billie Louise Clack
October 16, 1922 - February 3, 2010

Louise Clack, 87, passed away on February 3, 2010 in Fort Worth, TX. Her graveside funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 Hwy 277 South in Abilene. Visitation will be from Noon till 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South.

Louise was born October 16, 1922 in Abilene to Eugene Leroy and Violet Ruth Warlick Dickey. She married Morris Clifton Clack on June 3, 1945 and enjoyed 62 years of marriage until his passing in July 2007. Louise spent her life dedicated to educating the children of Abilene. She taught elementary school music at Central, Houston and Jackson until her retirement in 1976. She was a member of Abilene Classroom Teachers, Texas Classroom Teachers, Texas Music Educators, Texas Choral Directors, Who’s Who in Texas Education, and President of the Women’s Club in Clyde, TX

Louise moved to Ft. Worth in 2000 to live with daughter and husband. She attended Keller Church of Christ.

Louise was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved flowers, gardening, and was a talented painter. She was loved by all of us and we will really miss her.

Louise is survived by three daughters, Lynda Hamilton and husband Mark, Judy Stitts and husband Jerry, Karen Hall and husband Bill; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren.

Patrick Henry Shields I am a Veteran.
January 17, 1924 - February 4, 2010

Patrick H. Shields, age 86, passed away in his home with his wife, Lib, by his side along with very special friends, Shawn Justiss and Dorothy Minor.

Pat was born January 17, 1924, in Wingate, Texas, to Mr. and Mrs. J. Shields. He graduated from Wingate High School in 1942. In 1942, he volunteered to serve his country and joined the Navy. Having served in the Pacific and Atlantic areas, he was honorably discharged in 1945 after receiving the rank of Seaman 1st Class. He served on several ships including the U.S.S. Bataan and the LaGear.

He returned to Wingate where he and a special friend, the late E.J. Bishop, opened a café called The Green Fly. Shortly after that, he began a 33 year career as an inspector with the Texas Department of Transportation, retiring in 1977.

In May of 1952, Pat married Elizabeth (Lib) Adams in Colorado City, Texas. While in Colorado City, Pat was Scout Master of Troop 22 for 6 years. Upon being transferred to Howard County, they made their home in Coahoma, Texas where Pat was active in First Baptist Church, Boy Scouts, and metal work. He enjoyed farming and ranching at his farm in Cross Plains, Texas, after moving to Abilene in 1977 to be near the farm.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Abilene. He enjoyed all sports and was an avid baseball player and fisherman. He also enjoyed playing dominoes with friends.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eugene and Leon; and by two sisters, Ruth and Lillie Mae.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth, “his boy” Shawn Justiss and “the kids” Britt and Kayla Justiss, his sister Lanell Reynolds and husband Troy, brother-in-law John T. Adams and wife Betty Sue Adams, several nieces and nephews, and many close friends.

Graveside services, officiated by Gary Cotter and Mike Cotter, will be held Saturday, February 6th, at 3:00 at Elmwood Memorial Park, Garden of Memories. Visitation will be Friday, February 5th from 5:00 until 6:00 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy. 277 South.

Horace L. Cooke
February 6, 1920 - December 20, 2009

Horace Cooke, 89, passed away Sunday 20 Dec. 2009, at Hendricks Medical Center. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 28 at Elmwood Memorial Park with an 11:30 AM Memorial Service following at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech ST. Visitation is from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South.

Horace is survived by his son Rusty and wife, Pattie of El Paso, his son David and wife, Michele of Lexington, MA, daughter-in-law Melanie of Dallas, four grandchildren, Bryan and wife Jennifer, James, Clara and Stephen and two great-grandchildren, Caroline and Allison. Horace was preceded in death by his wife, June and his son Gregg.

Horace was born 6 February 1920 to Carol Lyttleton and Susie (Broadfoot) Cooke in Clyde Texas, one of 6 siblings. After living in Winters, the home town of grandfather and physician Robert L. Cooke, the Cooke family moved to Eden where Horace graduated from Eden High School in 1939.

Horace attended Texas A&M; before leaving to served in the Navy as a pilot and navigator during WWII, living briefly in San Diego California before and after his service. After returning to Texas, Horace moved with his parents to Abilene in 1947 where he and his father established the construction company, C.L. Cooke & Sons. In 1948 he married June Loree Gregg and they remained in Abilene for their lives where they were active members of Saint Paul Methodist church. In addition to being a prominent builder throughout the region, Horace also established a manufacturing co, owned and operated a dry cleaning business, and started the Natural Food Center. In his senior years Horace operated a successful cattle ranch in McCaulley.

Horace was much loved by family and friends whom he loved deeply in return along with trust, generosity, and affection for all.

Hillery Thomas Collinsworth I am a Veteran.
June 4, 1922 - December 24, 2009

Hillery T. Collinsworth, 87, passed away Thursday, December 24, 2009 at his home in Abilene. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Sunday at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South. His funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 28th in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at 1:00 PM at Johnson Cemetery in Moran.

Hillery was born in Shackleford County on June 4, 1922 the son of William Thomas Jones Collinsworth and Eva Lacy Collinsworth. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and later married Mamie Ruth Joy. He has been a resident of Abilene since 1956 where he retired as a mechanic with the Abilene Fire Department.

Hillery was a dependable, hard worker, never missing a day of work. He enjoyed hunting and fishing; he loved his grandchildren and his dog and had a wonderful sense of humor.

Survivors include six children, Hilda Ruth Clark and husband Allen of Rocky, Oklahoma, Gary Eugene Collinsworth of Iowa Park, Glynda G. Hollowell and husband Ben of Maryneal, Marshall Ray Collinsworth and wife Vanita, Sandra Lynn Hopkins and Michael J. Collinsworth all of Abilene; 16 Grandchildren, 28 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren.

His wife of 65 years, his parents, and three brothers, Bob, Frank and Jessie preceded him in death.

Bessie Mae Dalton
August 9, 1930 - November 28, 2009

Our beloved Bessie Mae Morrison Dalton, 79, went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 28, 2009 in Abilene. A graveside service with the Reverend Larry Baird officiating will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 in the Gazing Globe Section of Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 HWY 277 South.

Bessie Mae was born on August 9, 1930 in Fisher County and was married to A.L. Dalton. They had no children. She was a member of Abundant Life Apostolic Church in Abilene.

Her husband, two sisters, Frances Sidberry and Fay Scott, two brothers, Cloyce Morrison and Bobby Wooldridge preceded her in death.

She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Victor Hirsch and the staff of Hendrick Hospice Care for their care and support.
