Ruby Opal Anderson
August 20, 1913 - December 27, 2010

Ruby Opal Anderson, 97, passed away December 27, 2010 in Abilene. Ruby was born to Jason and Evalena Tucker in Red River County, Texas on August 20, 1913. She was a long time resident of Fort Worth, where she lived with her husband Paul F. Anderson (died August 1982). Ruby was a devoted housewife and mother whose cooking and homemade pies were enjoyed by many. She worked for the Baird family during the 1970’s as a caregiver for elderly family members.

After her husband’s death, Ruby moved to Abilene where she assisted her aging brothers and sisters. Ruby will always be remembered by those that knew her as a kind and gentle natured woman, always accepting stray cats and loving backyard birds.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 AM on Friday, December 31, 2010, at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South, Abilene.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Windcrest Alzheimer’s Care Center, 6050 Hospital Dr., Abilene, TX 79606. They provided Ruby with exceptional care during the last six years of her life.

Survivors include her son Jerry, Nieces, Bobby Philips, Edith Seabolt, Cindy Deegan, and Shirley Hood, grandchildren, Erika and Amy, and three great-grandchildren.

Alice Magallanez Fernandez
October 7, 1930 - December 28, 2010

Alice Magallanez Fernandez, 80, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 in Abilene. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South with burial following in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation is from 6:00 to 7:00 PM with a Prayer service beginning at 7:00 PM on Thursday at Elmwood Funeral Home.

Alice was born in Marfa, Texas the daughter of Juan Magallanez and Paula Dominguez. She married Reuben M. Fernandez on December 16, 1960 and they traveled the world with their family as Reuben served 23 years in the U.S. Air Force. The family came to Abilene in 1973 where Alice worked 7 years at Fairway Oaks Country Club and 10 years at the Dyess Officers Club. Alice was happiest when she was serving and waiting on others whether it be her family, a guest in her home or a customer while she was on the job. During her healthy years, she walked 5 miles a day and always enjoyed going to any kind of estate, garage or antique sale. She had a feisty personality which came in handy as she raised four boys. She was very proud of her family and she loved to brag and show pictures of them. Alice was a faithful servant of God and was a member of St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Reuben Fernandez; three sons, Juan M. Acosta and wife Marie of Warrensburg, Missouri, Rudy Allen Fernandez and wife Donna and Robert Fernandez all of Abilene; two brothers, Johnny and Sabino Orona of Odessa; three sisters, Andrea Gallegos of Odessa, Maria Elena Mata of Houston and Cruz Orona of Odessa; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her parents, her son, Reuben Marcus Fernandez Jr., grandson, Reuben Marcus Fernandez III, brother, Freddie Orona, and sister, Viola Alvarez preceded her in death.

Memorial donations are suggested to Hendrick Hospice Care, PO Box 1922, Abilene, Texas 79604

Catherine Elaine Mayhugh
September 13, 1959 - December 20, 2010

Cathy Mayhugh, 51, passed away Monday, December 20, 2010 in Abilene. Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, December 23rd in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South with burial following in the Caps Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday at Elmwood Funeral Home.

Cathy was born in Houston, Texas on September 13, 1959 the daughter of Leroy Dailey and Edna Strohmaier Dailey. She came to Abilene in 1978 where she has worked as a waitress at both the West-to-Go Truck Stop and Flying J Truck Stop for the past 25 years. Cathy was a practical joker and she enjoyed gambling and playing Bingo. She loved her family and especially loved spending time with her grandkids.

Survivors include her husband, Steve Wilson of Abilene; three sons, Johnny Mayhugh and wife Amber of Clyde, David Dailey of Abilene and Curtis Mayhugh and Katie of Abilene; sisters, Geneva Mata and Susie Factor both of Houston; brother, John Dailey of Galveston; ex-husband and friend, Ricky Mayhugh of Clyde; her grandchildren, Kylar, Trent, Colt and Troy and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alvin William Robertson I am a Veteran.
September 21, 1924 - December 18, 2010

Alvin William Robertson, 86, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2010. Graveside funeral service is 1:00 PM Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 7457 West Lake Road, Abilene, TX 79601, with Navy Honors.

Alvin was born on September 21, 1924 in Ponotoc, OK. On September 21, 1940, he married the love of his life, Nana Wilkerson. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Alvin worked in the missile industry where it took him as far as Wyoming, Florida, California, and Texas. He even worked on the first missile to the moon. He later settled in Hawley where he owned and operated Robertson’s Trucking Company for 25 years. He then retired and moved to Abilene where he enjoyed traveling in his motor home with his wife and dog Brandy to see the countryside. Although he loved to joke and tease he was serious about being “the best” and giving his all in anything he did. Alvin was a humble and great believer in his Lord. He was very loved and will be missed greatly.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Nana; 3 children, Glenda Cary and husband Tommy; Don Robertson and wife Kelly; and Gary Robertson and wife Carolyn; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John Thomas Gomez Sr. I am a Veteran.
December 21, 1931 - February 21, 2010

John T. Gomez Sr., 78, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at a local hospital in Abilene. His funeral service will be 10:00 AM on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 5410 Buffalo Gap Road Abilene, TX. Visitation will be 6:00 PM on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 with a Rosary Service beginning at 7:00 PM at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South.

John was born on December 21, 1931 in Newton, Kansas to Antonio and Irene Gomez. He spent his childhood and graduated from high school in Newton. In 1952 he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he continued to serve for the next 23 years. He married Mary Casillas on June 21, 1956 in Victoria, TX. They spent the next 19 years stationed in various locations as he dedicated his life to the service of our country. He was stationed in Korea as he served during the Korean War and also served two tours during the Vietnam War being stationed in Thailand and then Laos. They relocated to Abilene in 1970. After his retirement from the Air Force in 1975, he worked for Wal-Mart and then McMurry University. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He liked watching sports and enjoyed taking walks.

John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary C. Gomez; his three children, Tanya Valdez and husband Carlos of Abilene, John Gomez and wife Sandy of Lubbock, Gregg Gomez of Abilene; eight grandchildren, Brianne Baack, Brittany Baack, Tara Gomez, Gregory Gomez, Bryman Gomez, Cory Faust, Melissa Faust, Taylor Nelson; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Julia Pina; five brothers, Magdaleno Gomez, Lou Gomez, Gregory Gomez, Ralph Gomez, Antonio Gomez; and several nephews nieces and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Nancy Oropeza.

Henry Robert Johnson Jr. I am a Veteran.
December 28, 1929 - February 18, 2010

Henry R. Johnson Jr, 80, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2010 in Abilene. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South with burial following in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Johnson was born on December 28, 1929 in Little Rock, Arkansas where he grew up and graduated from Little Rock High School. He served in the Navy Reserves for 4 years before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force where he spent the next 27 years in service to his country. He retired in 1978 as a Senior Msgt.

Henry was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved to take the whole family fishing with him whenever they could go.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Maria Martinez; his children, Bobby Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Sandra Delegante, John Johnson and Janet Sanchez; one brother, Glen Johnson; and one sister, Lois Bedford; 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Gordon Jay Wittie
January 28, 1963 - February 15, 2010

Gordon Jay Wittie, 47, passed away Monday, February 15, 2010 in Abilene. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday in the Garden of Ten Commandments at Elmwood Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South.

Jay was born on January 23, 1963 in McKinley County, New Mexico. He grew up in Abilene and graduated from Abilene High where he played football. Jay attended Texas State Technical College and Cisco Junior College. He has worked in hospital maintenance most of his life and had worked for Hendrick Medical Center since returning to Abilene in 2007 to care for his mother.

Survivors include his brother, Jackie Nez; uncles, Joe Morris Sr., Sam Morris Sr., Bobby Morris Sr., Johnnie Morris Sr., Jack Wittie and Ed Wittie; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

Nellie Irene Mills
August 25, 1916 - February 13, 2010

Nellie Irene Mills, 93, passed away Saturday February, 13, 2010 in Abilene. Visitation will be from 6:00 till 8:00 PM on Tuesday, February 16th at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Her funeral will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, February 17th at Elmwood Funeral Home, officiated by Reverend Lewis Ellis.

Nellie was born on August 25, 1916 in Madison County, AL to Jesse and Maggie Swafford. When she was a young child the family moved to Hollis, Oklahoma and later to Childress, Texas where she met and married Thomas Mills. They were married on August 3, 1936 and enjoyed 59 years of wonderful marriage until his passing in 1996. In 1945 they relocated to Abilene where they raised their family and made many lasting friendships. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, taking care of her family and being a great Mema to all the grandkids.

She is survived by one son, Larry Mills of Flagstaff, AZ; three daughters, Wanda Davis, Linda Boyd and Cherry Rumbaugh and husband Marvin, all of Abilene; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; one sister, Lera Mae Bradshaw of Baton Rough, LA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother, two sisters and one infant great grandson, Ian Scott Davis

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the station four nurses and aids of Wisteria/Sears Methodist and also to the staff of Hendrick Hospice.

David "Sr." Lee Longman
July 8, 1961 - February 11, 2010

David Longman Sr., 48 of Abilene, TX. passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2010. Visitation will be from 6:00 till 8:00 PM on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. His funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel

David was born on July 8, 1961 in Baton Rouge, LA to Barton and Florence Longman. He attended school in Port Sulphur, LA. David was employed at Southern Tire Mart as a store manager. He was a loving father and a dedicated employee.

David is survived by his children Whitney, 19 of Plainview, TX, Samantha, 17 and David Longman Jr., 15 of Abilene, TX; His parents, Barton and Florence Longman of Port Sulphur, LA; Cindy Sims, ex-wife of Plainview, TX. His brother Buddy Longman of Port Sulphur, and his two sisters, Robin Brewer of Belle Chase and Laura Bladsacker of Pearl River, LA; Grandmother of the children Jan Holliday of Merkel, TX; and Aunt Trisha Kaercher of Abilene, TX; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
