Hugh Matthews
A Proud Native Texan - Walden’s Hugh Matthews
Hugh Matthews, one of the more beloved and respected residents in Walden, went alone down that long trail that never ends and is no more, as he succumbed in death on January 24, 2002. Hugh’s spirit remains in the fond memories of his neighbors and friends as to his gentleness, sense of humor, helpfulness and generosity. Hugh was a proud Texan and in the later months of his life he developed an idiopathic disorder [unknown cause] leading to his ultimate and untimely death. In the fell clutch of circumstance Hugh Matthews did not wince nor cry aloud but was a quite saint as he endured extrorardinary pain and discomfort, and still his head remained unbowed. Hugh Matthews was quite a suave character with his Stetson and gregarious personality as he told stories of his vast experiences thought the world. Hugh was also quite an ‘ole Texas sage who would tell the newcomers to Texas, the real truth about how "The West Was Won" Texas style, of course, and of many of the traditions they must learn if they ever wanted to be accepted as a real "Texan". Hugh was a unique and interesting character and also a "Master Texas-42 Player" who helped teach several newcomers at the weekly Thursday sessions at the Walden Yacht Club. Hugh was a clever and sly ‘ole Texas Boy who could clean the table of dominoes and with creditable smile and say something like, "There’s nothing to this game boys it’s all in the luck of an honest shuffle."
Hugh Matthews and wife Mary lived in Walden for over ten years. Hugh was 81- years old when he passed away. Hugh was born in Como, Texas, on August 16, 1920, the son of Bruce and Bessie Matthews. Although he traveled around the world he always felt that Como was his home. He lived in England in 1940 as part of a group of Americans sent to support the English war effort. After America entered the war, Hugh served in the United States Marine Corps. in the South Pacific and China. After the war, Hugh worked at Kelly A.F.B. in San Antonio for almost 30 years. When he retired he worked in Tehran for several years before returning to Como. He was devoted to the Como Methodist Church and Highland Terrace Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas where he taught the Men’s Bible Class for more than 20 years prior to relocating in Walden. The Funeral was held at the Como United Methodist Church in Como, TX. on Monday, January 28, 2002 and Internment followed at the Forrest Academy Cemetery in Como, TX.

Her smile turned the edge of the wind
Her memory disarms death
Early she went to bed, too early we saw her light put out.
