Eugene Harrison McCann of San Antonio, formerly of Corpus Christi, went peacefully to be with the Lord on September 11, 2005. He was 91.
Eugene (Gene) was married
to Mary Louise Stuart of Houston for 48 years. Together they were faithful members of First Presbyterian Church, Corpus Christi.
Gene graduated from Texas A&M; in 1934 as a civil engineer. He served in WWII in the European theater as an Infantry Ordinance officer. He retired from Exxon where he had worked as an engineer.
Gene enjoyed socializing around Corpus over a cup of coffee and was active with civic groups citywide, including Masonic Lodge #189, Kiwanis Club, and Texas Society of Professional Engineers. He was active with the City Museum downtown, where he sipped coffee, shared stories with friends, and did volunteer work to help with the rotating exhibits. When not carrying on an active social life in Corpus, Gene enjoyed traveling.
Surviving members of Gene’s family include: Michael McCann (Gene’s son) and his wife, Cheryl McCann, Michael and Barbara Simpson (Gene’s daughter). Surviving grandchildren include: Isaac David Simpson, Abigail Simpson, Brian McMillan, David Simpson, and Michael Simpson.

William Emick

William “Bill” John Emick, also known as “Mr. Bill, ” “Wild Bill, ” “Yo Baybee, ” “#1 Warthog” and affectionately as “The Wolf” was born again into Heaven on September 5, 2005 after sustaining serious injuries from an auto accident on April 16, 2005.
Bill was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on April 17, 1931 and was 74 years old. His parents are William and Mabel Myers Emick of Atlantic City.
He is survived by his sisters, Jeanette Prosser, Amanda White, Anne Galbraith, and Dorothy Buzzard, of the East Coast. He is survived by his three children, Richard Emick, Cherie Emick, and James Emick. He also has six grandchildren and two great grandchildren, all of San Antonio. Among his best friends are Bonnie Braun; his former wife, Nancy Emick; as well as Larry Van Horn.
Bill was stationed in San Antonio with the Air Force where he was honorably discharged as a First Class Airman in 1955. In 1956 he started work with the Civil Service for the Air Force and retired after 35 years of service. He worked in the Directorate of Maintenance and for thirteen years was employed in the Directorate of Material Management. Bill has served as Chairman of the Nominating Committee of the GECU Governing Board. The Kelly Apprentice Club designated him as Top Apprentice in 1960 while he worked with the B/58’s and B/70’s. He was the chairman of the Kelly AFB Apprentice Club for two years. He has served as chairman of several Kelly Management Club special committees during his 10-year membership. Bill went to school at night and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Science in 1977 from Southwest Texas University. He was designated as the Air Force Engineering and Technical Services Rep for the C5A in 1978-79. He received the award for outstanding community service from Sanyo for his work with the Youth Employment Program in 1979. In 1984 he received the Air Force Daedalian Award. In May of 1982 he was promoted and moved to McClellan AFB in Sacramento, CA. There he received the award for Meritorious Civilian Service as Deputy Chief of the A-10’s. He was the MMS Deputy Division Chief of the Sacramento Air Logistics Center where he set the record for the A-10 readiness rate and earned the name WJ “Wild Bill #1 Warthog” from the Tactical Air Command. He retired as a GM15 from McClellan AFB in 1986 where a U.S. flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol in his honor. After retiring from Civil Service to the Air Force, Bill started investing in real estate where he became one of the single largest property owners in Bexar County.
He was in countless volumes of “Who’s Who in the World and Finance and Industry.” He has been quoted by Heloise as saying, “Life is your attitude toward it.”
Being of very handsome looks and intelligence, he was voted San Antonio Women’s Single Society Bachelor of the Month in May of 1981 and Aug. of 1987.
Bill Emick was responsible for the integration of the NCO Club. He was an avid Spurs, football, sports fan. He was beyond athletic. He played basketball and baseball. He won Best Hitter for KAFB Slowpitch Softball and all tournaments. He was Slow Pitch Champ in 1961 with a no hit/no run known as Lefty “Ace” Bill Emick. His team won the State TAAF Slow Pitch Championship in 1964 and 1966. Bill played Water Volleyball and his team won at least 8 local trophies and the State Championship.
He was the best at Racquetball, winning countless local championships, plus 1987 State and South Regionals. He also played in Sacramento and won numerous tournaments. He also won 3 Gold Medals in the Senior Olympics Racquetball Tournaments. One of the organizations Bill was proudest to be a part of was PARTI.
He received the President’s Award for his contributions to San Antonio. His award reads, “The strength of the wolf is in the pack. The strength of the pack is in the wolf. The wolf will be missed.”
Bill is also known for writing two of the most beautiful prayers ever written. Although he was too modest to do so, his granddaughter Tracy sent his prayers in to a nationwide poetry contest where he won first place and was published.
Bill’s favorite pastime was shooting craps, as he was well known as a high roller all over the country.
Bill Emick was a loving, caring, clever, funny, hard-working man and we will surely miss him. Thank you for everything and thank you for being the best father and friend in the world. He loved nature, camping, fishing, jazz and dancing.

Bill will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at Porter Loring on 1604. After the service, a celebration of his life will be held at Raffles, 8633 Crownhill.

Mamie Canales Gutierrez, age 87 of San Antonio, Texas, died on Sunday, September 11, 2005.
She was born August 10, 1918 in Uvalde, Texas to Ygnacio P. Canales and Ada Fernandez Canales.
Mamie is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, Rafael Gutierrez; her sons Rod Gutierrez and wife Sandra and Daniel Gutierrez; daughter Ada G. Martinez and husband David; grandchildren, Andrea and Matthew Gutierrez; Amanda, Theresa and Bryan Martinez; Becky Verdi and husband Michael, JR Rodriguez and wife Vanessa; Mari Sela Corales and husband Mark; great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Christianna Corales and Dylan and Lauren Verdi; brothers Manuel, Bill, Alex and Roy Canales and sisters Stella De la Garza and Esther Pruneda. Mamie is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her sister Rosie Menchaca and brother Peter Canales.
She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her family and friends

Christopher Lawrence Canales passed away on September 9, 2005 at the age of 16.
He was born on December 7, 1988 to his loving parents, Mark and Gwynne Canales. He was raised in Helotes, Texas where he attended Sandra Day O’Connor High School.
Christopher was a unique individual who loved music, travel, school and his large extended family. He will be remembered for his gentle humor, quick wit and loving ways.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Reuben Duke, and his grandmother, Mary Canales. He is survived by his father, Mark Canales, his mother Gwynne Duke Canales, his sister, Courtney Canales, his brother, Brian Canales; grandma Mary Lou Duke and grandpa Modesto Canales, as well as many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers will be his uncles, Mike Shaw, Bill Wheeler, John Schattenberg, Steven Canales, Kevin Canales and his cousin, Keaton Shaw.

Polly Ferk of San Antonio, TX, age 92 passed away, Sunday, September 11, 2005. She was a much involved resident being a member of Madison Hills Baptist Church and several outstanding organizations such as OES, the V. F. W., American Legion, Genealogy Society and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She has won numerous awards for her volunteer work.. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. Polly is survived by her sisters, Pearl Moates of Cisco, TX and Margaret Saint of Bridge City, TX, sisters-in-law, Maude Sartor of Granbury, TX and Opal Sartor of Killeen, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hubert Coon, Jr. age 76 of San Antonio, died Thursday, September 8, 2005.
He was born and raised in Lamesa, TX. He served 2 years in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Coon and his wife, Alice moved to San Antonio in 1957. They were charter members of Northeast Baptist Church in 1960, but services began before that in their home. He served as Deacon, Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and many other committees and activities.
He was employed with General Supply Company for 25 years. Mr. Coon then opened and operated his own construction company, Coldcraft Inc, until May 2005. Among the most notable construction projects, Mr. Coon was involved with are Hemisfair, the original construction of the Hemisfair Arena as well as when the roof was raised, the Tower of the Americas, Laurie Auditorium at Trinity University, Patio Foods Gebhardt Foods, Martin Foods and Glazier Foods. He was involved with the construction of most Cold Storage facilities in South Texas. He also constructed the Convention Center in Wichita, KS and was a consultant on the construction of the Louisiana Superdome as well as numerous other projects.
Mr. Coon was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Clora Coon; his brothers, Claude and Everett Coon; and his son Danny Coon. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alice A. Coon; son, Michael Coon; grandchildren, James and Suzanne Coon; 1 great grandchild; brothers, Aaron and wife Millie, Jim, Wayne, Kenneth, Jerry and wife, Gwen and Sam Coon; sister, Peggy Coon.

Herbert E. Schweppe, Sr., age 82, of San Antonio, died Friday, September 9, 2005.
Mr. Schweppe was a member of Madison Square Presbyterian Church. He retired from Air Training Command at Randolph AFB, Civilian Personnel Department after more than 30 years service.
He was preceded in death by his son, Herbert E. (Tiny) Schweppe, Jr in 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Esther Lee (Chuckie) Schweppe; daughter-in-law, Gay Schweppe; grandchildren and their spouses, Guy and Sarah Schweppe, Liberty Hill, TX and Julie and Mike Leal, San Antonio, TX; great grandchildren, Abigail, Madelyn and Camille Schweppe and James Leal; 3 nieces.
