Capt. Ernesto M. Blanco-Caldas of San Antonio, TX age 28 was killed in action on December 28th 2003. He died in Iraq while performing a support mission with the 1-504 HHC scouts of the 82nd Airborne Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
An improvised explosive device hit his vehicle. Three of his fellow soldiers were wounded. Ernie had been in Iraq since September of the current year. He had also served in Afghanistan with the 82ndAirborne Division as a platoon leader, earning a Bronze Star. Ernie was a graduate of the Army’s Jumpmaster, Ranger and Airborne courses. He attended Infantry Officer training in Fort Benning, Georgia and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the year 2000. Ernie was a graduate of Texas A & M, Class of ’98, where he had been a member of the Corps of Cadets and was a Ross Volunteer.
He was a member of the 1993 graduating class of Churchill High School in San Antonio, Texas, his home of record since 1975. Ernie was a classically trained guitarist who loved Rock and Country music. He was a gifted singer and an excellent dancer. Ernie had a contagious smile, and whatever Ernie did, he did with great enthusiasm, humor, and total dedication. He was the finest son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, friend and companion a person could have and was looking forward to being the same as a husband.
Ernie was dedicated to his faith, his country, his family and his profession. A truly natural born leader, Ernie lived his life courageously, always looking out for others. Ernie was born in Hartford, Connecticut on the 10th of August of 1975.
He was raised in Puerto Rico, his parent’s birthplace. He is survived by his mother Gloria Caldas-Levine, his father, José M. Blanco; his sister, Carmen Pendergraff; his grandparents Joe and Lee Caldas; his nephew Trystan Pendergraff, and his fiancée, Michelle Sorrel. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Blaine Pendergraff; his step-father, Barry Levine; his step-mother, Taimi Blanco, and his aunts and uncles, Joanie and Dr. Jerry Maymi, Patricia and Dr. Rafael Santiago, José and Tamara Caldas.
He will be sorely missed by all including his eleven cousins; Natalie, Carlos, Mariel, Erika, Alec, Nicole, Christian, Jessica, Rachel, Javier, and two-month old Shoshana. Ernie, their eldest cousin, was a source of fun and inspiration. This is truly the passing of a great soul and spirit.

Charles C. Day, age 84, of San Antonio, Texas died Friday, January 2, 2004.
Charles was educated at Columbia University and received his Masters Degree from Juilliard School of Music. Charles also studied music in Paris and attended Le Courdon Bleu while there.
After teaching at Texas Tech University, in 1942, Charles came to San Antonio where he became the organist and choir master at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. During his tenure, of over sixty years, Charles had a host of friends in the San Antonio community, at St. Paul’s and throughout the diocese of West Texas.
His love of music was his lifelong passion, and he taught music throughout his lifetime. Charles’ other passions included his love of people, a love of cooking, good food and good wines. Charles was a food critic for the San Antonio Light for a number of years, he was a national judge for the African Violet Society and he raised prize Himalyan cats.
His quick wit and outgoing personality were his trademarks.
He is survived by his brother, Edward A. Day and wife, Virginia; sister, Sue Alice Satterfield and husband John Andrew; and his nieces and nephews.

Lien Thuy Nguyen, age 55, of San Antonio, passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2003.

On December 31, 2003, Evelyn White Thomson Affleck went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
“Prissy”, as she was known by her friends and family, was born January 29, 1916 in San Antonio, Texas.
Prissy treasured her family, friends and home life above all.
She resided to the end in the home she loved for 58 years.
She was married
to Frederick Llewellyn Thomson, Jr., and together they raised five children, spending many happy times at the family ranch she enjoyed as a girl.
She hosted many Thanksgivings, Easters and other events at the ranch over the years; it was one of her favorite spots on this earth. Fred preceded her in death in 1969, after a long illness. Several years later she married
Harry Sinclair Affleck, Sr., who shared her love of travel. They had many good years together before he passed away in 1989. Prissy had a valiant and indomitable spirit.
Her life was characterized by quiet generosity. She valued integrity, common sense and self-discipline; all of which she possessed in great measure. She was a plumb line for her family, a rock to stand on. She was a rare human being.
Prissy loved her mother and father very much and honored them all her life, even long after they were gone.
She was preceded in death by her parents, R.L. White and Ethel Smyth White; her brothers, R.L. White, Jr., John H. White and sister, Joella White Bitter; also her youngest son, Edmond Bryant Thomson and grandson, Stephen Brent Wilde, Jr.
She is survived by four of her children, Frederick L. Thomson, III, wife, Susie; Trisha Thomson Chilcutt, husband, Ben; Ethel Thomson Runion; Elizabeth Thomson Wilde; and her sister-in-law, Dela Wright White. She is also survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Thomson Hetrick, husband, Jeff and son, Wesley Boone; F.L. (Derick) Thomson IV; Heather Chilcutt Sanders, husband, Michael and son, Zane Eli; Paige Chilcutt Craig, husband Tim and daughter, Taylor Addison; Addie Chilcutt Kerr, husband Byron; Megan Toland Chilcutt; Robert Whitthorne Runion, wife, Annette and son, Alex; David Llewellyn Runion; Lara Elizabeth Wilde; Christopher Smyth Wilde and Jennifer Jane Wilde; step-children, Harry S. Affleck, Jr., wife, Linda, son, Harry Affleck III, daughter, Linda Affleck Stewart, husband, Drew and their two children, Marguerite and Drew Stewart; Ethel Affleck Johnson, husband, Johnny Clay and son, Henry Clay Johnson. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family wants to thank the wonderful team of caregivers who have tended to Prissy’s needs over the years: Rosie Gutierrez, Esther Ross (deceased), Irene Carillo and her sister, Dolores, Onfalia Rivera, Carmen Morin, Beverly Ellis, Gloria Hernandez and Charisse Miera.

Joyce Elizabeth Hollyfield Holchak died Wednesday, December 31, 2003, shortly after being diagnosed with liver cancer.
She was born May 15, 1929 at Waelder, Texas to Otto Moses Hollyfield and Dora Edna Hill Hollyfield and was reared in Thompsonville, a rural community west of Waelder, educated at Waelder public schools, attended the University of Texas, graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1949 and began a teaching career in home economics at Wallis, Texas.
She married
William Howell Holchak June 2, 1950 in Waelder Methodist Church and they resided for almost 2 years in Cleveland, Texas, where he edited the newspaper and she taught home economics.
Her teaching career was interrupted when her husband went on active duty with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. She joined him in Japan, where they resided until his discharge in 1954.
She then taught school in Three Rivers, Texas, where her husband was co-owner and editor of the newspaper for 18 months. They moved to San Antonio in June, 1955, where he began a career in advertising and public relations.
Mrs. Holchak stayed home to rear her two sons, Glenn and Paul, until 1970, when she returned to her teaching career in SAISD. She taught at Fannin Elementary School for two years and then at John Pershing Elementary School as a 1st grade teacher for 18 years.
She was a life-long Methodist and she and her husband joined St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in 1955 and remained active until her death. \
Mrs. Holchak was President of the Wesleyan Service Guild, the Woman’s Society of Christian Service (forerunner of the United Methodist Women), Chairperson of the Church Council, served on several commissions, taught Sunday School and was a volunteer with Andy’s Kids, an after-school day-care program.
Mrs. Holchak was also a leader in Bible Study Fellowship and served as President of Chapter O, PEO. She was a cancer survivor and served as a volunteer for the Cancer Therapy and Research Center in the Medical Center for six years.
She was honored as CTRC Volunteer of the year in 1996.
After devotion to her family and church, her first love was tending the flowers and plants in her yard.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John Harper Hollyfield and Brooks Hill Hollyfield. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Bill Holchak; sons, Glenn William Holchak of San Antonio and Paul Hollyfield Holchak of New York City; several nieces and numerous cousins.
Kathleen Semlinger Heinz

Kathleen (Kitty) Semlinger Heinz born to Edward and Alma Semlinger September 26, 1919 in San Antonio, Texas entered into rest on Friday, March 18, 2005.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William (Bill) Heinz who passed away May 28, 1996.
They were married
October 15, 1948 at East Kelly Field Chapel.

Pedro A. Nieto passed away Thursday, March 17, 2005 at the age of 88.
He was an accomplished guitarist and singer. Pedro played professionally in his youth.
He was a WWII veteran who served in the Philippine Islands during WWII.
Pedro was a lover of life and of his family.
He was everybody’s “favorite” and everybody’s “hero”.
Pedro was preceded in death by his wife, Josefina Nieto and son-in-law, Thomas Armstrong.
He is survived by his son, Pedro G. Nieto of Uvalde, TX; his daughters, Maria Nieto Senour and her husband, Dennis Ollerman of San Diego, CA and Andrea Armstrong of San Antonio; his son, Jesus Nieto of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Viento, Kevin, Kaleb, Andrea, Carlos, Anne, Marisa, Andina, and Alejandro; great-grandchildren, Genevieve and Isabella.

Truly a member of “The Greatest Generation, ” Louis was a patriot, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, journalist, fraternalist, and community leader.
Born in Galveston, Texas, on September 3, 1917, to Charles and Rowena Engelke, Louis graduated from The University of Texas with a degree in Journalism in 1941. He wrote and edited for the Galveston News and San Antonio Express News until entering the U.S. Army in 1942.
He served as an MP in Patton’s Army’s 80th Division in World War II, sailing for England on D-Day and earned the Bronze Star. Louis retired in 1977 with the rank of Colonel.
Louis is remembered for his public relations work and his commitment to the community. Following World War II, Louis returned to the San Antonio Express News, and then began a career in Public Relations.
He wrote, “My clients have always been of the highest type… My formula in working for them is: X (their good deeds) plus Y (the interpretation of their good deeds) = Public Attitudes.”
Blessed with energy and enthusiasm, he served as Grand President of the Sons of Hermann from 1977 to 1989, President of the National Fraternal Conference of America, and President of the Texas Fraternal Congress.
He was responsible for the inception of Hermann’s Happiness, a popular Fiesta event, now 25 years old. Louis’s full life included: Sons of Hermann Harmonia Lodge, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Order of the Cascaron, Fiesta San Antonio Commission, American Legion, Founders Lions Club, San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, 80th Division Veterans Association, Monday Morning Quarterback Club, and Sigma Delta Chi.
At the time of passing, Louis was compiling his WWII memoirs into a book and learning to use a computer and the Internet.
Louis is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Maxine; his daughter, Roni Engelke and her husband, Harold Seiler; his two grandsons, Mitch Aubin and his wife Suzanne, and Mark Louis Aubin and his wife Carol; and two great-grandsons, Mitch & Suzanne’s baby, Benjamin Aubin and Mark and Carol’s baby, Christopher Louis Aubin; nephew, Henry Beall, Jr and wife, April.
