Erma Purvis Sorrells
Erma Purvis Sorrells, 83, of Baytown, passed away December 4, 2003. She was born August 20, 1920 in Goose Creek, Texas. Mrs. Sorrell’s family lived on the banks of Goose Creek when she was born but moved to the main street of the boomtown of Pelly, where she grew up. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She married Troy Sorrells in November 1936.
She was preceded in death by parents Art and Josephine Purvis; husband Troy Sorrells; son Montie “Butch” Sorrells; grandson Patrick Sorrells; great-grandsons Montie, Mark and Peter Sorrells; brothers Art, E.G., J.H. and Hunter Purvis; and sister Angie Musgrove.
She is survived by daughter Nancy Sorrells Oliver of Baytown; special daughter Michele Sorrells Stevens and husband Buddy of Crosby; special niece Erma Martin and husband Charles of Snook, Texas; grandsons Bevil Allan Oliver Jr. and wife Michelle of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Steven Art Sorrells of Alexandria, Virginia; grand-daughters Kathryn Plumlee and husband Curtis of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Maureen Sorrells; special grandchildren Kelly Miller Woodall and husband Jason of Crosby, Matthew Miller of Deer Park, D’Ann Tillman of Excelsior, Minnesota and David Martin of Fort Worth, Texas; beloved great-grandchildren Rebecca, Caroline and Mary Hannah Plumlee of Baton Rouge, Ashlynn Sorrells of Baton Rouge, Avery Grace Oliver of Cypress, Texas; and great-nieces and nephews Aiden Woodall of Crosby, Texas, and Hannah, Andrew, Stephen, Jena, Jefferson and Emma Tillman of Excelsior, Minnesota.
Pallbearers will be Allan Oliver, Troy Oliver, Michelle Sorrells, Steven Sorrells, Matthew Miller, Jerry Wayne Sorrells and Jim Ray Sorrells. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews Ed Herndon, Ferrell Purvis, Forrest Purvis, Dale Purvis, Charles Martin and Buddy Stevens.
Visitation will be today, Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Navarre Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, December 8 at 2 p.m. at Navarre Funeral Home. Interment will be at Whites Cemetery in Highlands, Texas.

Dennis Fay Sieber
Dennis Fay Sieber, 42, of Baytown, departed this life on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at his home. He was born in Big Spring, Texas on January 14, 1961 to Alton Sieber and Dora Winkler Sieber. A longtime resident of Baytown, Dennis attended Robert E. Lee High School and Redeemer Lutheran Church. Remembered for his strong work ethic, he worked as a meat cutter for several grocery stores, including Hathaway’s, H-E-B and most recently, Food Town. He loved fishing and cooking for family gatherings, and would always say “If you go home hungry…it’s your own fault.” There was nothing that Dennis couldn’t fix mechanically. Dennis knew no stranger, and would often open his heart and his home to those who would otherwise be alone.
He is survived by his sons, Mason Lake Sieber and Dustin Sieber, both of Baytown, and Austin Ryan Sieber and Adrian N. Sieber, both of Prairie Grove, AR; daughter, Autumn Nicole Sieber of Prairie Grove, AR; parents, Alton and Dora Sieber of Baytown; brother, Danny Sieber and his wife Barbie of Baytown; sisters Debbie Coile and her husband Raymond of Channelview and Dian Landriault and her husband Adam of Baytown; grandmother Martha Winkler of Baytown; and nieces and nephews Dillon and Garrett Landriault and Wade and Tusdé Golla. Lester Gladden Cordes, Jr.
Lester Gladden Cordes, Jr., 83, of Minocqua, Wisconsin, died on Wednesday, November 27, 2003, at the home of his daughter, Sylvia, in Baytown following a long illness.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Stella Anast Cordes; his daughter, Sylvia Lohkamp, of Baytown; his two sons, Dr. Ronald A. Cordes of Rigby, Idaho, and Dr. Lester G. Cordes, III, of Los Gatos, California; his sister, Betty Harding; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Cordes.
He received his B.A. and his MBA from the University of Chicago and had a long and successful career in management as general manager of Jacobsen Manufacturing of Racine, Wisconsin, as general manager of Westclox in LaSalle-Peru, Illinois, and as a management consultant with the international consulting firm of Booz, Allen and Hamilton. His work took him all over the world.
He retired in 1980 to Minocqua, Wisconsin, where he pursued his love of the outdoors, in particular freshwater fishing, and co-authored The Cordes/LaFontain Guide to Walleye Fishing. He was also an intrepid antique firearm collector, specializing in Colt single action pistols and Colt Lightning rifles, and attending antique gun shows throughout the Midwest.
Dr. Richard Kleiman of First Presbyterian Church in Baytown officiated at a family gathering and service of remembrance held on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at L.A. Crespo Funeral Directors. Interment will take place in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Mary Straw Tavary
Mary Straw Tavary, 79, of Baytown, Texas, went to be with the Lord on December 4, 2003 in a Baytown hospital. Mary was born February 20, 1924 in Coudersport, Pa. She was a Baytown resident for 57 years. Before becoming a devout wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary served in the United States Navy as a Pharmacist Mate Third Class in San Diego, Ca. during WWII. Mary is preceded in death by her first-born infant daughter, parents, Bert and Gertrude Straw; brothers, Bert and Billy Straw; sisters, Joan Krueger and Gertie Covey; and special friends Laura and Marie Chamblin. Mary is survived by her husband of 58 years, Raymond Tavary of Baytown; son Raymond and wife Cappie Tavary; sons Bert and Robert Tavary; daughter Kathleen Lemon and Arlie “Buster” Boggs; daughter Patricia and husband Jerry Dunno; and daughter Anna and husband Randy Blythe; sisters-in-law Dorothy St. John and Lolita Hubbard; and brothers-in-law Michael and wife Bessie Tavary and Arthur and wife Gladys Tavary. Mary was a wonderful Memaw to her ten grandchildren: Jeremy Garrett, Jason Lemon, Jerry Lemon, Jaime McCullough, Mary Cappic Tavary, Toni Russell, Michael MacLeod, Randy Blythe, Travis Blythe and Kirra Tavary, and four great-grandchildren: Haley Lemon, Logan McCullough, Lindzee Lemon and Brayden MacLeod. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and very special friends. Special thanks go out to Angels Above Us Home Health Care. Pallbearers will be grandsons Jeremy Garrett, Jason Lemon, Jerry Lemon, Michael MacLeod, Randy Blythe and Travis Blythe. Honorary Pallbearers are Martin McCullough and Jeffrey Russell.
Visitation will be today, Sunday, December 7, 2003 from 2 until 4 p.m. at Earthman Funeral home, 3919 Garth Road, Baytown, Texas. The funeral will be held Monday, December 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Earthman Funeral Home with Robert Tavary officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park Lawndale’s Garden of Gethsemane. Patsy Clarice Eddlemon, 63, of Tarkington Prairie, passed away, Monday, July 29, 2002 at the Kingwood Medical Center in Kingwood.
A native of Macedonia, she had lived in the Liberty County area her entire life. She is a member of the Joy Fellowship Church in Tarkington Prairie and was a retired custodian for the Tarkington Independent School District.
She is survived by her husband, Thurman Eddlemon of Tarkington Prairie; brother, Joe Smith and his wife Faye of Dayton; sisters, Pearl Vandver of Jacinto City; Gladys Franklin of Macedonia; Amy Crippens and her husband Lloyd of Jacinto City; Charlene Gregory of Dayton; Norma Hicks and her husband Gene of Crosby; 17 nieces and nephews, 27 great-nieces and great-nephews and seven great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews and special friend, Sue Baker of Macedonia.
The family received friends on Wednesday and Thursday from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, August 2, 2002 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with the Rev. Malcolm Land officiating. Burial will follow at the Ryan Cemetery in Tarkington Prairie.

NORMAN DWAYNE PONDER
Norman Dwayne Ponder, 44, of Baytown, passed away, Tuesday, July 30, 2002 in a local hospital.
Norman was born September 5, 1957, in Baytown and lived here all his life. He was a teacher at Horace Mann Jr. School where he was Sponsor of Crime Stoppers. He was a member of Baker Road Baptist Church. He was a member and past Master of the Baytown Masonic Lodge #1357 AF&AM. He was a graduate of Sterling High School and received his BS Degree from Lamar University and was active in local youth sports. He was a fully certified Law Enforcement Officer thru T.C.L.E.O.S.E.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas and Rena Ponder.
He is survived by his wife, Vickie Ponder of Baytown; son, Danon Nicholas Ponder of Baytown; daughter, Danielle Nicole Ponder of Baytown; parents, William Norman and Helon ponder of Baytown; brother and sister-in-law, Rance and Rhonda Ponder of Baytown; sister and brother-in-law, D’Laine and Duane Smith of Baytown; grandparents, Elgin and Elon Reichenau of Baytown; aunts and uncle, Geana and Wilburn Pfeiffer and Francis Ponder, nieces and nephews, Michelle and Matthew Ponder, Skye Smith and Brittany and Alex Weinstein, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bill and Jan Phillips of Weatherford; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mickey and Stephanie Phillips of Houston; his faithful friend, “Odin” and numerous relatives and friends.

Elroy James Carroll, 78, of Baytown, passed away, Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at a local hospital.
Elroy was born on June 8, 1924 in Electra, Tx. He lived in Baytown since 1995. He was a carpenter and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Bayway Church of Christ, a member of the Masons, Shriners, American Legion, VFW of Baytown and Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Nathlie Carroll of Baytown; sons and daughter-in-law, Ike and Shirley Carroll of Louisiana; Michael Roy Carroll, daughter and son-in-law, Dianna Gail Carroll and Rusty of Temple; step-children, Keith and Gail Hodges of Baytown; Donna and David Hamilton of Covington, La.; brother, Gene Carroll of California, 15 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

CHARLOTTE LEE SMITH
Charlotte Lee Smith, 56, of Baytown went to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 2, 2002. Charlotte was born January 30, 1946 in Baytown to Elzie and Elsie McCagg.
Charlotte was a R.N. who worked for St. Luke’s hospital in Houston for the past 15 years.
Charlotte was an active member of the Cedar Bayou Baptist Church in Baytown. She was very talented with crafts, such as needlepoint, woodworking, one of her other interests was cooking. Charlotte really enjoyed traveling with her husband Bill. One of her favorite places to go was to British Columbia, Canada.
Charlotte is survived by her loving husband of 35 years; William Smith of Baytown; son, Geoffrey Smith of Baytown; daughter, Gennifer Gafarov and husband Eldar of Baytown; parents, Elzie and Elsie McCagg of Baytown; mother-in-law, Jeanne Smith of Highlands; grandson, Talon Smith of Baytown; brothers, Bill McCagg and wife Jill of Baytown, Ralph McCagg and wife Allison of Webster, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
