O'Neal - Coppenger (2004-06-01)
The colors of a late afternoon sky following a rainstorm will forever be etched in the memories of Jessica O'Neal and Casey Coppenger.
On that day, Dec. 13, 2002, Coppenger asked O'Neal the question she said she will never forget -- to share her life with him for as long as they both shall live.
The high school sweethearts met during O'Neal's sophomore year and Coppenger's junior year at Heritage High School, brought together as cooking partners in a Food & Nutrition class. Little did they know they were destined to be partners for a lifetime, O'Neal wrote.
Because O'Neal was a cheerleader and Coppenger played baseball, they started their relationship by watching and supporting each other at different sporting events. Several months later they realized their relationship was much stronger than friendship.
After high school graduation, the two went on to the University of Tennessee, and it was at this point they knew they were meant to be together for the rest of their lives. They talked about marriage and their future many times, but both valued their education and felt it necessary to finish college before moving into the next stage of their life as a couple, O'Neal wrote.
During Coppenger's senior year in 2002-2003, he planned a special surprise for his future bride, one that every girl dreams about, O'Neal wrote.
"That day Casey and Jessica decided to run some errands in town and even look at engagement rings; however, what Jessica did not know was that Casey had her ring in his jacket the whole time!" O'Neal wrote. The two returned to her home, and when they reached the bottom of her driveway, Coppenger began playing their song, "My Best Friend," in his truck. Rain continued to fall as they proceeded up the driveway, with O'Neal completely unaware of Coppenger's plan.
"Finally, after a drive that seemed like forever, Casey asked Jessica if she wanted to walk with him out into a field, which was beside her house, to `check on their tree,"' the bride-elect recalled, explaining that on April 2, 1999, they had engraved their names on the tree. "Amazingly, the rain stopped and allowed Casey to share with Jessica his never-ending love for her. Casey dropped down to one knee and pulled out the ring that had been in his pocket the whole day! More than anything, I wanted to be totally surprised when Casey asked me to marry him and he definitely fulfilled my one wish."
O'Neal has been completing her final year of college and also making plans for the wedding, which will take place June 11. The bridesmaids' gowns are coral and the flowers are a mixture of coral, pink and white.
"In choosing these colors, both Casey and Jessica were reminded of Dec. 13, 2002, when the rain suddenly stopped and the amazing colors of the sky shone through the clouds that late Friday afternoon," O'Neal wrote. "Therefore, it was indeed `the colors of love!'
"With the professional help of Sharon Montano from Yewniquely Yewrs and All That Floral Designs and Judy Bledsoe form Cakes of Character, they have designed a wedding and reception that will be the wedding of their dreams!"
Jessica O'Neal of Maryville, daughter of Jimmy and Wendy O'Neal of Maryville, will marry Casey Coppenger of Maryville, son of Darell and Karen Coppenger of Maryville, at 6:30 p.m. June 11 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Father Alex Waraksa and Greg Long will officiate.
