Thelma McClary

February 28, 1927 - May 3, 2010

Thelma Hurt McClary, 83, of Hemet, California, passed away Monday, May 3, 2010. She grew up in Ocoee, TN and graduated from Polk County High School. After high school she attended and graduated from Mars Hill College in North Carolina. She made her home and raised her family in California and had lived there most of her life. She retired as a medical transcriber.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Winston and Pearl Cloud; brothers, Eugene Cloud, A.J. "Bud" Cloud and Frank Cloud; sister, Edith Cloud Pritchard; husband, Zorum Hurt and husband, Hugh "H.M." McClary.

She is survived by her daughter, Robin Henderson of Hemet, CA; son, Richard Hurt of Petaluma, CA; sister, Ina Kagle of Cleveland; three grandsons; one granddaughter; two great grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Cookson Creek cemetery with Dr. Robbie Speights officiating. A family gathering will be held at Cookson Creek Baptist Church following the interment.

Higgins Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Viola Perian
April 12, 1941 - May 6, 2010

Viola Eaton Perian, 69, of Benton, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2010 at her residence. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Lena Hunt Eaton.

She is survived by her husband, Wilbert Perian; daughters, Una Mae Rogers, Debra Ann Simmonds and Janice Marie Perian; son, Wilbert Wilson Perian, Jr.; 6 grandchildren, Robert Flake, Sabrina Free, David Perian, Bryan Parrish, Ashley Williams and Gabriel Green; 10 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; sister, Katherine Ellis; brothers, Henry Eaton, Jimmy Eaton and Johnny Eaton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with the Reverend Tony Duggan officiating. Interment icon will follow in Old Ocoee cemetery with Billy Williams, Randy Simmonds, Bryan Parrish, Jamie Green, Robert Flake and Donnie Simmonds serving as pallbearers. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Glenn A. Burris
September 30, 1939 - April 28, 2010

Glenn A. Burris, 70, of Benton, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at his residence surrounded by his family after a 14 month courageous battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He graduated from Calhoun High School in 1957. He retired from Bowater with 41 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Benton. He was an avid golfer, playing almost daily at Chatata Valley Golf Club. He was very active with the Polk County Democratic Party.

He was preceded in death by his by his parents, Harvey and Pauline Shoemaker Burris.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Burris; children, Carol Ann Yates and husband, Randy and Rodney Burris, all of Benton and Mark Burris and wife, Bridgett of Cleveland; grandchildren, Rachel and Greg Minardo of Knoxville, Tiffany and Chris Harris of Decatur, Rodney G. Burris of Benton and Mollie and Bennett Burris of Cleveland; great granddaughters, Madelyn, Gracie and Katelyn Harris of Decatur; brother, Vernon Burris and wife, Katherine of Calhoun; brother-in-law, Wendall Guinn and wife, Jane of Atlanta, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Benton with the Reverend Robbie Speights and the Reverend Scott Linginfelter officiating. Interment icon will be Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Benton Memorial Gardens with Stan Guinn, Paul Guinn, Matthew Guinn, Jeff Bowling, Steve Medley and Eddie Geren serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be James Thompson, Mike Weeks, Don Raines and his buddies at the Chatata Valley Golf Course. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service, along with a balloon release.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Chattanooga, 200 Central Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37403.

Higgins Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Ann Hampton
May 29, 1922 - April 21, 2010

Ruth Ann Johnson Hampton, 87, a life long resident of Benton, passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at her home. She was a seamstress for different manufacturing companies and secretary for her husband in the Register of Deeds office in Polk County. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Benton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Stella Russell Johnson; sister, Erma Lane; and brother, Herbert Craig.

She is survived by her husband, Hugh Hampton of Benton; children, Mary Patrick and Judy Hampton; grandchildren, Judith Nelson, Jennifer Crews and Tim Patrick; great grandchildren, Lauren Putnam, Hayley DuPre, Mary Ellyn DuPre, Michael Nelson, Katie Patrick and Carrie Patrick; brother, Dale Craig; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with the Reverend Jasper Woody officiating. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Tennessee Baptist Children's Homes, PO Box 2206, Brentwood, TN 37024-2206.

Lisa Ann Morris
September 26, 1970 - April 15, 2010

Lisa Ann Morris, 39, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2010.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Gilbert Clave, Jr.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Morris; daughter, Megan Morris; mother, Connie Moss Clave; and brother, Edward Lee Harrison.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Benton Memorial Gardens with Pastor Tony Wilson officiating.

Her family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home.

The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in her memory.

Higgins Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Larry C. Rymer
February 17, 1956 - April 22, 2009

Larry C. Rymer, 53, a resident of Reliance, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009. He was a member of Archville Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Lonnie Shell Rymer.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Rymer; three children, Susan Morgan of Reliance, Bryan Morgan of Athens and Chris Morgan and wife, Sherrie of Delano; eight grandchildren, Ashley, D.J., Amanda, Hailey, Logan, T.J., Samantha and Hunter; sister, Bonnie Wilcox and husband, Daniel and brother, Carl (Fuzz) Rymer and wife, Eula, all of Reliance; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 8:00 in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with Reverend Wilfred Wright officiating. Interment icon will be held Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 11:00 at Archville Baptist Church cemetery. The service will conclude with a White Dove Release Ceremony.

His family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 on Friday, April 24 at the funeral home prior to the service.

Jerry O. Briggs
February 22, 1944 - April 22, 2009

Jerry Briggs, 65, a resident of Calhoun, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009. He was originally from Niagara Falls, NY, but had been in the area for the last ten years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Helen Briggs.

He is survived by his children, Wenda Akers of Cleveland and Jerry Briggs, Jr. of Niagara Falls, NY; grandchildren, Ashley Byrwa, Kevin Byrwa and wife, Tabatha, Kariffa Briggs and Tabitha Schuman; great-grandchild, Kaevin Byrwa; brother, Larry Briggs of New York; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Gail Akers.

There will be a visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Higgins Funeral Home in Benton.

Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Chattanooga National cemetery

Jackie C. Rayburn
January 14, 1948 - April 25, 2009

Luther “Jackie” Curtis Rayburn, Jr., 61, a resident of Benton, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2009. He was a long time member of Stevensville Baptist Church in Etowah. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Rayburn, sister, Maxine Rogers, brother, Jay Rayburn, and daughter, Beth Rayburn.

He leaves behind his wife, Kay Rayburn of Benton; brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Brenda Rayburn of Englewood; sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Bill Dotson of Benton; brother-in-law, David Rogers of Benton; three daughters and two sons-in-law: Angie Rayburn of Chattanooga, Paula and Jason Smallen of Loudon, and Kathy Robinson and Michael Mullinax of Etowah; five grandchildren: Michael Ellison, Evelyn Robinson, Brandon Ellison, Beth Robinson and Katie Smallen; three step-children: Terena Wilcox, Daren White, and Tiffany Tapley; step-grandchildren: Cody Morrow, Derrick Saxe and Destiny Saxe; and many nieces and nephews as well as his best companion Prissy, his dog.

Graveside services will be held for family and friends Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at 12:00 p.m. (noon) in Conasauga cemetery in McMinn County with Pastor Grady Butler officiating and concluding with a white dove release.

A private viewing for family will be held Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Higgins Funeral Home.

Gay Stewart
February 19, 1952 - April 17, 2009

Gay A. Stewart, 57, a resident of Riceville, passed away Friday, April 17, 2009, at her residence. She was a native of Benton. She was a former employee of SkyRidge Medical Center (Bradley Memorial Hospital), and a member of Riceville First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Betty Adams Allen.

She is survived by her husband, Jeff Stewart of Riceville; son, Daniel Stewart of Riceville; sister, Sha’ree Allen of Benton.

Graveside services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Zion Baptist Church cemetery with Pastor Michael Roach officiating.

Her family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Saturday at Higgins Funeral Home.
